ABSTRACT

Primary care physicians can help prevent a large number of eye injuries by giving their patients a few simple safety tips. Eye protectors with polycarbonate plastic lenses are recommended for most athletes, regardless of whether they have normal vision or they wear glasses or contact lenses. Polycarbonate lenses in a sturdy frame also offer protection during common daily, recreational, and avocational activities.

ABSTRACT

To provide optimum care for patients who have age-related macular degeneration, primary care physicians need to be aware of symptoms such as acute loss of vision and distorted vision. Immediate referral to an ophthalmologist is necessary so that diagnosis can be confirmed and laser treatment can begin if indicated. Patients are at risk for recurrence and should use an Amsler grid daily to detect further visual changes. Current studies are investigating the role of dietary supplements in preventing macular degeneration.

ABSTRACT

The Peckham Experiment, begun in London in 1935, was a combination health and recreation center that embodied a visionary, ecological approach to health care. In the face of the continued and costly failure of today's episodic medical services, the author invites us to re-examine Peckham and perhaps take a cue from the past for the future.
