ABSTRACT

A 61-year old lady with poorly-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus was diagnosed with rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis following presentation with sinusitis, ophthalmoplegia, proptosis and facial numbness. She was treated successfully with aggressive surgical intervention including orbital exenteration, accompanied by anti-fungal therapy with liposomal amphotericin B and posaconazole, followed by isavuconazole as salvage therapy. We discuss the challenges around optimising antifungal therapy of this lethal infection in the context of hepatic and renal toxicity.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to synthesize mixture solutions which can accurately mimic the dielectric properties of biological tissues, specifically muscle and adipose tissues between 500 MHz and 50 GHz. Mixtures utilizing concentrations of bovine serum albumin (BSA) dissolved in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and Ringer's solutions were synthesized to mimic in vivo and ex vivo muscle tissues. Solutions consisting of concentrations of peanut oil and Triton X-100 (TX) in PBS and Ringer's solutions were also synthesized to mimic in vivo and ex vivo adipose tissue. Results were then analysed and compared to measured dielectric properties of in vivo and ex vivo biological tissues from another previous study. Good agreement with said dielectric property measurements were obtained since the solutions from this study yielded low RMSE and RMSRE values. This implied that such solutions can be utilized in the construction of human body phantoms for narrowband and ultra-wideband microwave devices for near field breast cancer imaging.

ABSTRACT

In this article, we report on the characterization of the dielectric properties of in vivo rat liver at 36.4°C from 500 MHz up to 40 GHz with less than 5% uncertainty. The measured data were fitted to a Cole-Cole model and dielectric parameters are presented together with their respective 95% confidence interval. The root mean square error is 0.42. Moreover, ex vivo measurements were conducted in situ at 1, 2, 4 and 6 min after animal death and are compared to in vivo measurements. The results show that immediate changes in [Formula: see text]and [Formula: see text] are within experimental uncertainty, and therefore changes between in vivo and published ex vivo dielectric properties can be attributed to tissue hydration.

ABSTRACT

The experimental charge density in the title complex has been re-examined. The original work, reported some 8 years ago [Smith et al. (1997). J. Am. Chem. Soc. 119, 5028-5034], was undertaken using a very early version of the XD software, which contained serious programming errors. A re-refinement, using the original data and a recent version of the XD software, shows that many of the unusual aspects of this earlier study are artefacts due to these programming errors. The topological properties of the newly obtained experimental density compare well with those calculated from a theoretical DFT (density-functional theory) UHF-SCF (unrestricted Hartree Fock-self-consistent field) density. This report corrects several erroneous conclusions regarding the charge density in the title complex--in particular, the highly unusual diffuse Laplacian distribution about the Ni atom, and the trifurcated bond path from the Ni atom to the alcohol oxygen donor atoms are no longer observed. An examination of a range of topological properties of the metal-ligand bonds leads to the conclusion that the Ni-N and Ni-O bonds have an intermediate character, with a significant shared interaction, but with a substantial ionic component. This new study also reveals a previously unrecognized intramolecular H...H interaction in the macrocyclic ligand.

ABSTRACT

Whereas the Cu(II)-mediated oxidative coupling of 2-aminonaphthalenes 7a and 7b results in the clean formation of 1,1'-binaphthyls 13a and 13b, respectively, their higher homologues and congeners 8-12 have been found to exhibit a different reaction pattern. Thus, 2-aminoanthracene (8) gave a approximately 1:1 mixture of the expected bianthryl derivative 15 and the carbazole 16, whereas the 9-aminophenanthrene (10), 3-phenyl-1-aminonaphthalene (11), and 2-aminochrysene (12) produced almost exclusively the corresponding carbazoles 19, 20, and 21, respectively. By contrast, the isomeric 3-aminophenanthrene (9) gave rise to the azo compound 17 as a result of the preferential oxidation on the nitrogen. The carbazoles have been shown to arise directly from the coupling reactions rather than from the primarily formed binaphthyls. Alternatively, carbazole 19 can also be prepared from 1b on reaction with hydrazine. On the other hand, treatment of 3a with hydrazine resulted in the formation of a approximately 2:7 mixture of amine 11 and arylhydrazine 22. 2,2'-Diamino-1,1'-bianthryl (15) has been resolved into enantiomers via cocrystallization with (-)-N-benzylcinchonidinium chloride and shown to have (R)-(-)-15 configuration by X-ray crystallography.
