ABSTRACT

Background: The cosmetic procedure is a treatment modality for improving the appearance of a person, and it may involve either surgical or nonsurgical interventions. The number of women who undergo cosmetic surgery in Saudi Arabia has increased dramatically. In fact, the reasons for the increase in the number of cosmetic procedures include the growth impact of social media and the pursuit of perfection. The study aimed to determine the level of acceptance of cosmetic surgery among young Saudi women, and the factors influencing their decisions. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among literate Saudi women during March 2023 to April 2023. A self-reported questionnaire was used, which investigated the demographics, acceptance, and information about cosmetic surgery and social media. Results: A total of 1685 female participants were included in this study: 62.6% were students, 73.6% were single, and 65.8% were aged 18-23 years. The levels of acceptance were high among 38.9% of the participants, and the level of acceptance was significantly affected by age (P = 0.0001), social status (P = 0.0001), work (P = 0.0001), education (P = 0.001), and income (P = 0.001). Up to 86.1% of the participants had not undergone cosmetic surgery, and the reasons for undergoing surgery commonly included dissatisfaction with appearance and social media. Conclusions: The acceptance of cosmetic surgery in this study was low, and it was affected by several demographics of the participants. For instance, social media played a crucial role in driving women to undergo such procedures.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Perilunate injuries are rare and are frequently missed during initial examinations. These injuries are missed upon primary evaluation in approximately 25 % of cases, which can result in catastrophic outcomes. Early diagnosis is essential to avoid chronic wrist pain and limited range of motion. IMPORTANCE: We reported rare finding & our approach in management which represents a significant contribution to the field and we believe it would be of great interest to your readers. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 25-year-old man who presented with a bilateral Perilunate fracture-dislocation injury. He underwent bilateral definitive open reduction using a dorsal approach. Headless screws were used for the internal fixation of the bilateral scaphoids, and Kirschner wires were used to secure the left distal radius and for bilateral intercarpal fixation. Aggressive physiotherapy was initiated 8 weeks after the open reduction. After 1 year, the patient showed a satisfactory outcome with an excellent bilateral Mayo wrist score. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Perilunate dislocations and fracture-dislocations are considered orthopedic emergencies with close reduction being the initial treatment of choice. Early diagnosis and treatment of such injuries are essential to achieve optimal outcomes, which may be achieved with open reduction and internal fixation through a combined volar and dorsal approach. CONCLUSION: Perilunate injuries should be considered as one of the differential diagnoses in wrist injuries. All Perilunate injuries should undergo emergency close reduction, typically followed by open reduction and reconstruction.

ABSTRACT

For many years, people with excess weight around specific body parts who wanted to improve their shape or establish symmetry to achieve their ideal body image chose liposuction. As with any intervention, there is a chance of complications and unfavorable outcomes with liposuction. As a late result of the procedure, skin necrosis, infection, and hematoma are some of the known complications of such a procedure. Other known complications include damage to surrounding structures like nerves, vasculature, or perforating body viscera. This study aimed to report an eventful and unwanted result of a common and relatively safe cosmetic procedure. A 31-year-old Saudi female presented to the emergency room (ER) with right unilateral vision loss, bruises, and burning pain involving the upper limbs, thighs, abdomen, back, and flanks after having liposuction and rhinoplasty two weeks ago in a private clinic overseas. Multiple investigations were obtained to investigate her blindness, which showed a right upper branch of retinal vein occlusion. She was treated conservatively with daily wound dressings and analgesics. After five days, the patient returned with infected wounds and clinical deterioration, necessitating multiple excisions, debridement, and grafting. She eventually recovered and was discharged in good health. Herein, we report a rare case of unilateral blindness and multiple skin necrosis following liposuction of the abdomen and thigh. Debridement and skin grafting were the ideal treatment strategies.

ABSTRACT

Burn injuries can lead to a variety of short- and long-term complications, peripheral neuropathy has been known as the most common neuromuscular complication. 29% of the burn-related peripheral neuropathy has been found in both the upper and lower limbs. Moreover, literature failed to find the causative factors for specific presentations like foot drop in burn patients. This study reports a series of 10 patients who developed foot drop after burn injury and required occupational therapy follow up at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. To assess the effect of different risk factors in the outcome of foot drop. 10 case records were reviewed, 70% among the patients were men and 30% were women with a mean age of 39 and a mean BMI of 28. Most of the patients 70% were burned by flame. The mean Total Body Surface Area (TBSA) was 62%. 4 of the cases (40%) were having comorbidities. There was a significant association between death and high TBSA. All cases were managed without surgical intervention, physiotherapy started immediately after the diagnosis of foot drop. Seventy percent of our patients improved while 3 cases have expired. Higher TBSA showed to be significantly associated with death.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer (BC) has a major impact on women's health worldwide. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is no exception, where it is considered the most common malignancy, embodying the second leading cause of cancer deaths after lung cancer. In today's world, people are more health conscious and more aware of different medical specialties. Despite the tremendous advancements in education, there seems to be a limited knowledge among the public regarding this issue. Various studies have been conducted in many regions to determine the perception/awareness about breast cancer. The present study is of the first of its type in our region, assessing the awareness of the public about breast cancer and its screening measurements. As per our knowledge, there is no study that estimated the awareness of breast cancer and its screening measurements among the public in the Asir region. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the awareness of breast cancer and its screening measurements among public and assess the knowledge about Breast Self-Examination (BSE) and their opinion about its effectiveness in early diagnosis of breast cancer to detect the relationship between awareness and socioeconomic status. This study is a cross-sectional prospective study, with a sample of 1046 participants aged between 12 and 80 years (male and female) from the Asir region evaluated by questionnaire after attaining consent. The selection of participants was based on the simple random sampling method. The majority of participants were of age 20 to less than 30 years (56.9%). About half of them were males (52.7%). The majority was single (61.2%). Most of them (74.0%) have a high education level (University and more). About one-third of the participants (32.7%) worked in the medical field, and most of them worked in the non-medical field (46.6%). Regarding general knowledge, the score was 60.2%, which represented a relatively good knowledge. The overall knowledge regarding breast cancer as recorded by our population reported that only 18.8% had good knowledge. Participants of this resettlement colony have poor knowledge about breast cancer, be it about risk factors, signs, and symptoms, or early detection procedures, where the overall knowledge score was only 18.8%.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of amblyopia among medical students in Saudi Arabia, and investigate the impact of amblyopia on their Academic performance. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study which targeted 478 of male medical students from the College of Medicine at King Khalid University. A questionnaire was used to investigate the demographics of participants. Distance visual acuity was assessed monocularly using tumbling "E" chart in all participants. Then detailed ophthalmic evaluation was performed for any student with two or more lines difference between the two eyes or visual acuity of ≤20/40 in either eye. RESULTS: A sample of 478 male medical students, of whom 12(2.5%) were found to have amblyopia. Anisometropic amblyopia was the most common type (10/12, 83.3%) followed by strabismic amblyopia (2/12, 16.7%). There is a significant relation between past ocular history and amblyopia (p-value = 0.008). Up to 25% of amblyopic students not diagnosed before and 25% of them agree that amblyopia affects their social & psychiatric status. There was no effect of amblyopia on the academic performance (P-value = 0.5). CONCLUSION: Amblyopia was found in 2.5% of male medical students. Amblyopia had a moderate effect on the students' lives, but it did not affect their academic performance.
