ABSTRACT

Modern navigation satellite communication has the characteristic of high transmitting rate. To avoid bit errors in data transmission, low density parity check (LDPC) codes are widely recognized as efficient ways for navigation communication. Conventionally, the LDPC decoding is applied for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and degrades severely while facing the impulsive noise. However, navigation communication often suffers from impulsive interference due to the occurrence of high amplitude "spikes". At this time, the conventional Gaussian noise assumption is inadequate. The impulsive component of interference has been found to be significant which influences the reliability of transmitted information. Therefore the LDPC decoding algorithms for AWGN channel are not suitable for impulsive noise environments. Consider that LDPC codes over GF(q) perform better than binary LDPC in resisting burst errors for current navigation system, it is necessary to conduct research on LDPC codes over GF(q). In this paper, an optimized initialization by calculating posterior probabilities of received symbols is proposed for non-binary LDPC decoding on additive white Class A noise (AWAN) channel. To verify the performance of the proposed initialization, extensive experiments are performed in terms of convergence, validity, and robustness. Preliminary results demonstrate that the decoding algorithm with the optimized initialization for non-binary LDPC codes performs better than the competing methods and that of binary LDPC codes on AWAN channel.

ABSTRACT

Inter-satellite links are an important component of the new generation of satellite navigation systems, characterized by low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), complex electromagnetic interference and the short time slot of each satellite, which brings difficulties to the acquisition stage. The inter-satellite link in both Global Positioning System (GPS) and BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) adopt the long code spread spectrum system. However, long code acquisition is a difficult and time-consuming task due to the long code period. Traditional folding methods such as extended replica folding acquisition search technique (XFAST) and direct average are largely restricted because of code Doppler and additional SNR loss caused by replica folding. The dual folding method (DF-XFAST) and dual-channel method have been proposed to achieve long code acquisition in low SNR and high dynamic situations, respectively, but the former is easily affected by code Doppler and the latter is not fast enough. Considering the environment of inter-satellite links and the problems of existing algorithms, this paper proposes a new long code acquisition algorithm named dual-channel acquisition method based on the extended replica folding algorithm (DC-XFAST). This method employs dual channels for verification. Each channel contains an incoming signal block. Local code samples are folded and zero-padded to the length of the incoming signal block. After a circular FFT operation, the correlation results contain two peaks of the same magnitude and specified relative position. The detection process is eased through finding the two largest values. The verification takes all the full and partial peaks into account. Numerical results reveal that the DC-XFAST method can improve acquisition performance while acquisition speed is guaranteed. The method has a significantly higher acquisition probability than folding methods XFAST and DF-XFAST. Moreover, with the advantage of higher detection probability and lower false alarm probability, it has a lower mean acquisition time than traditional XFAST, DF-XFAST and zero-padding.

ABSTRACT

The continuous wave interferences (CWIs) and the narrow-band interferences (NBIs) have significantly impacted the acquisition, tracking and positioning accuracy of Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) receivers. As an interference suppression technology with a simple structure and low hardware cost, the adaptive infinite-duration impulse response (IIR) notch filter has been widely employed in the receivers to mitigate the CWIs and the NBIs. However, the nonlinear phase characteristics introduced by the IIR notch filters into the navigation receivers, may cause the distortion of navigation signals. It also leads to amplitude and phase distortion of the correlation peak in acquisition and loop tracking, which consequently brings on positioning errors in the measurement domain. This problem, however, has been ignored by many previous papers. Meanwhile, some other researchers came up with the idea of equalizers and all-pass networks compensating the distortion, which is also highly infeasible. Therefore, we propose a new method of an adaptive linear phase IIR notch filter with low hardware cost which is composed of three parts—the complex IIR notch filters, the IIR linear phase structure, and the adaptive and variable step-size algorithms. Applying this method, interference suppression and the correlation peak distortion compensation can be achieved with a modest increase hardware cost. This paper compares the performance of the new method with other IIR filters in both CWI and NBI scene and presents the effects of its parameters on the anti-jamming performance. Simulation results show that the proposed module has better anti-jamming performance in NBI scene and can compensate for the correlation peak distortion in the meantime.

ABSTRACT

As multipath is one of the dominating error sources for high accuracy Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications, multipath mitigation approaches are employed to minimize this hazardous error in receivers. Binary offset carrier modulation (BOC), as a modernized signal structure, is adopted to achieve significant enhancement. However, because of its multi-peak autocorrelation function, conventional multipath mitigation techniques for binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal would not be optimal. Currently, non-parametric and parametric approaches have been studied specifically aiming at multipath mitigation for BOC signals. Non-parametric techniques, such as Code Correlation Reference Waveforms (CCRW), usually have good feasibility with simple structures, but suffer from low universal applicability for different BOC signals. Parametric approaches can thoroughly eliminate multipath error by estimating multipath parameters. The problems with this category are at the high computation complexity and vulnerability to the noise. To tackle the problem, we present a practical parametric multipath estimation method in the frequency domain for BOC signals. The received signal is transferred to the frequency domain to separate out the multipath channel transfer function for multipath parameter estimation. During this process, we take the operations of segmentation and averaging to reduce both noise effect and computational load. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated and compared with the previous work in three scenarios. Results indicate that the proposed averaging-Fast Fourier Transform (averaging-FFT) method achieves good robustness in severe multipath environments with lower computational load for both low-order and high-order BOC signals.

ABSTRACT

The diagnosis method for a weak-fault model with only normal behaviors of each component has evolved over decades. However, many systems now demand a strong-fault models, the fault modes of which have specific behaviors as well. It is difficult to diagnose a strong-fault model due to its non-monotonicity. Currently, diagnosis methods usually employ conflicts to isolate possible fault and the process can be expedited when some observed output is consistent with the model's prediction where the consistency indicates probably normal components. This paper solves the problem of efficiently diagnosing a strong-fault model by proposing a novel Logic-based Truth Maintenance System (LTMS) with two search approaches based on conflict and consistency. At the beginning, the original a strong-fault model is encoded by Boolean variables and converted into Conjunctive Normal Form (CNF). Then the proposed LTMS is employed to reason over CNF and find multiple minimal conflicts and maximal consistencies when there exists fault. The search approaches offer the best candidate efficiency based on the reasoning result until the diagnosis results are obtained. The completeness, coverage, correctness and complexity of the proposals are analyzed theoretically to show their strength and weakness. Finally, the proposed approaches are demonstrated by applying them to a real-world domain-the heat control unit of a spacecraft-where the proposed methods are significantly better than best first and conflict directly with A* search methods.

ABSTRACT

Step length estimation is an important issue in areas such as gait analysis, sport training, or pedestrian localization. In this article, we estimate the step length of walking using a waist-worn wearable computer named eButton. Motion sensors within this device are used to record body movement from the trunk instead of extremities. Two signal-processing techniques are applied to our algorithm design. The direction cosine matrix transforms vertical acceleration from the device coordinates to the topocentric coordinates. The empirical mode decomposition is used to remove the zero- and first-order skew effects resulting from an integration process. Our experimental results show that our algorithm performs well in step length estimation. The effectiveness of the direction cosine matrix algorithm is improved from 1.69% to 3.56% while the walking speed increased.

ABSTRACT

Irregularities in the Earth's ionosphere can make the amplitude and phase of radio signals fluctuate rapidly, which is known as ionospheric scintillation. Severe ionospheric scintillation could affect the performance of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Currently, the Multiple Phase Screen (MPS) technique is widely used in solving problems caused by weak and strong scintillations. Considering that Southern China is mainly located in the area where moderate and intense scintillation occur frequently, this paper built a model based on the MPS technique and discussed the scintillation impacts on China's BeiDou navigation system. By using the BeiDou B1I signal, this paper analyzed the scintillation effects on the receiver, which includes the acquisition and tracking process. For acquisition process, this paper focused on the correlation peak and acquisition probability. For the tracking process, this paper focused on the carrier tracking loop and the code tracking loop. Simulation results show that under high scintillation intensity, the phase fluctuation could be -1.13 ± 0.087 rad to 1.40 ± 0.087 rad and the relative amplitude fluctuation could be -10 dB to 8 dB. As the scintillation intensity increased, the average correlation peak would decrease more than 8%, which could thus degrade acquisition performance. On the other hand, when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is comparatively lower, the influence of strong scintillation on the phase locked loop (PLL) is much higher than that of weak scintillation. As the scintillation becomes more intense, PLL variance could consequently results in an error of more than 2.02 cm in carrier-phase based ranging. In addition, the delay locked loop (DLL) simulation results indicated that the pseudo-range error caused by strong scintillation could be more than 4 m and the consequent impact on positioning accuracy could be more than 6 m.

ABSTRACT

Cyber-physical systems such as autonomous spacecraft, power plants and automotive systems become more vulnerable to unanticipated failures as their complexity increases. Accurate tracking of system dynamics and fault diagnosis are essential. This paper presents an efficient state estimation method for dynamic systems modeled as concurrent probabilistic automata. First, the Labeled Uncertainty Graph (LUG) method in the planning domain is introduced to describe the state tracking and fault diagnosis processes. Because the system model is probabilistic, the Monte Carlo technique is employed to sample the probability distribution of belief states. In addition, to address the sample impoverishment problem, an innovative look-ahead technique is proposed to recursively generate most likely belief states without exhaustively checking all possible successor modes. The overall algorithms incorporate two major steps: a roll-forward process that estimates system state and identifies faults, and a roll-backward process that analyzes possible system trajectories once the faults have been detected. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by applying it to a real world domain: the power supply control unit of a spacecraft.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents an image-based indoor localization system for tracking older individuals' movement at home. In this system, images are acquired at a low frame rate by a miniature camera worn conveniently at the chest position. The correspondence between adjacent frames is first established by matching the SIFT (scale-invariant feature transform) based key points in a pair of images. The location changes of these points are then used to estimate the position of the wearer based on use of the pinhole camera model. A preliminary study conducted in an indoor environment indicates that the location of the wearer can be estimated with an adequate accuracy.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the use of a chest-worn wearable computer, the eButton, to assess physical performance of older adults. The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), a standard cliniucal test, is first conducted on older human subjects. Then, a triaxial accelerometer and a triaxial gyroscope within the eButton are utilized to record acceleration and angular velocity of body motion on the same subjects for one week. The sensor data corresponding to walking episodes are segmented and features in the time and frequency domains are extracted. Comparison between these features and the total SPPB scores shows that the sensor data acquired in free-living conditions can be used as indicators of the subjects physical performance.
