ABSTRACT

Odontogryllini is a tribe of ground-dwelling crickets exclusive to America. After several taxonomic rearrangements, this tribe has five genera and 23 species now placed in the subfamily Landrevinae. These crickets have dorsoventrally depressed bodies and are moderately to densely covered with bristles. The males may bear tegminal, metanotal, or tergal glands. In this contribution, we discuss the taxonomic status and the morphological features of Odontogryllini and the other two tribes of Landrevinae: Landrevini and Prolandrevini. The presence of dorsal spines between the outer spurs of the hind tibia distinguishes Odontogryllini from Prolandrevini, and the straight or slightly arcuate but never S-shaped stridulum from Landrevini. We also propose the enlarged and plate-like rami as a diagnostic characteristic to distinguish Odontogryllini from Landrevini. Additionally, we describe a new species of the genus Xulavuna de Mello & Campos from the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest, named Xulavuna krenakore sp. nov..

ABSTRACT

Within the subfamily Edessinae, Edessa Fabricius, 1803 is the genus with the most nomenclatural and taxonomic issues, basically related to the large number of poorly described species and the large number of new species. Furthermore, for many groups of morphologically similar species, certain names are used as tag names, adding to confusion and misidentification. The genus Edessa has been studied in small groups of species, either informal morphological groups within the genus or formal subgenera. Recently the nominal subgenus was revised and delimited, including the group E. sexdens. The E. sexdens group is diagnosed by a combination of characters such as anterior arms of metasternal process with excavated apex; connexival segments with a pair of dark spots; ventral surface of abdomen elevated medially; presence of a shallow rounded excavation near each spiracle; pygophore with union of dorsal rim and posterolateral angles with a groove, superior processes of the genital cup laminar, oblique to the paramere and continued ventrally by a carina; and paramere with three lobes. The biology of species in this group is almost unknown and most species have been collected in the Amazon region, particularly in the Brazilian Amazon. This group is the largest, in number of species, within the subgenus Edessa, presenting a surprising number of new species. In this article, fifty-one species new to science are described and Olbia magnifica Pirn, 1958 is transferred to Edessa. The composition of the E. sexdens group is updated to 74 species (23 previously described and 51 described here). The identification key to the species of the E. sexdens group is updated, and maps with the distribution of the new species are presented.

ABSTRACT

Correia Fernandes (2016) described the new genus Grammedessa comprising twelve species. Da Silva Fernandes (2021) described the new genus Calcatedessa including four species and conducted its morphological cladistic analysis associated with all the species of the sister genus Grammedessa including six other new species not yet described. We describe in this paper these six new species: G. fundicava sp.n., G. graciligramma sp.n., G. acalyptoprocta sp.n., G. stichtocephala sp.n., G. nigricava sp.n. and G. longispina sp.n. Also, the female of G. brunneotarsata Correia Fernandes, 2016 is described, and the redescription of G. hamata (Walker, 1868) (transferred from genus Edessa) is presented. The diagnosis, description, and identification key to the species of Grammedessa have been updated, and the distribution of Grammedessa has been extended to Suriname and two other Brazilian states: Maranho and Rondnia.

ABSTRACT

A new monotypic genus, Mellogryllus mutus n. gen. et n. sp., is described from the dense ombrophilous forests of the Brazilian coastal Atlantic Forest. This new genus is included within the genus-group Miogryllae due to the structure of the male genitalia. The key for the genera of the Group Miogryllae is also updated. Finally, the morphological particularities of Mellogryllus n. gen. are discussed, such as the presence or absence of tympanum in the different sexes, variation in the number of spurs on the legs, and the modification of the first pair of legs for underground life.

ABSTRACT

Hypoxys is the second most diverse genus of Edessinae, but it still has many new species to be described. The taxon was divided into four species groups, among these the H. triangularis group currently has the fewest number of species. This group is formed by H. triangularis (Dallas, 1851), H. capito (Breddin, 1904) and H. subrastratus (Bergroth, 1891). In this study, we describe five new species: H. myrtacivorus sp. n.; H. striatus sp. n.; H. saltensis sp. n.; H. curvatus sp. n. and H. ocanensis sp. n. Additional diagnostic characteristics were added to the H. triangularis group and described species. Internal genitalia of both sexes of Hypoxys species are presented for the first time. Diagnoses for the new species, distributional map and identification key are provided.
