ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the efficacy of potentially probiotic fruit-derived lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains loaded into sodium alginate (SA) coatings to control the anthracnose development in guava cv. Paluma and mango cv. Palmer caused by distinct pathogenic Colletotrichum species (C. asianum, C. fructicola, C. tropicale, C. siamense, C. karstii, and C. gloeosporioides) during 15 days of room temperature storage (25 ± 0.5 °C). The effects of the formulated coatings on physicochemical parameters indicative of overall postharvest quality of guava and mango were evaluated. The eight examined LAB strains caused strong inhibition on the mycelial growth of all target Colletotrichum species in vitro. LAB strains with the highest inhibitory effects (Levilactobacillus brevis 59, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus 129, and Limosilactobacillus fermentum 263) on the target Colletotrichum species were incorporated into SA coatings. These strains had viable counts of > 6 log CFU/mL in SA coatings during 15 days of room temperature storage. Application of coatings with SA + L. brevis 59, SA + L. pentosus 129, and SA + L. fermentum 263 delayed the development and decreased the severity of anthracnose lesions in guava and mango artificially contaminated with either of the tested Colletotrichum species. These coatings impacted positively on some physicochemical parameters indicative of postharvest quality and more prolonged storability of guava and mango. The formulated SA coatings loaded with tested fruit-derived potentially probiotic LAB strains could be innovative and effective strategies to control postharvest anthracnose and extend the storability of guava and mango.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Complete spinal cord injury (SCI) is characterized by permanent loss of nerve impulse propagation through the injury level leading to complete loss of voluntary muscle contraction. However, clinically undetectable top-down modulation of lower limbs might be present and can be evidenced using surface electromyography (sEMG). CASE REPORT: A subject with complete chronic SCI and no spasticity presents voluntary modulation of sEMG signal during a task-specific activity associated with sensory input. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT: We present for the first time the spectral characterization of sEMG signal in response to orthostatic training associated with voluntary movement attempts in complete SCI. Behavior of sEMG signal varied according to kinematic properties of movement, reinforcing the voluntary influence of efferent pathways on motor output. Our findings will contribute to elaborate evaluation protocols to investigate the preservation of corticospinal activities, and to evolve more accessible strategies in a clinical setting.

ABSTRACT

The application of probiotics has emerged as an innovative bioprotection technology to preserve fresh and minimally processed fruit and vegetables. This review discusses the most recent advances on the development and application of probiotic-loaded edible films/coatings as a strategy to preserve fresh or minimally processed fruit and vegetables. Available studies have shown a variety of materials, including hydrocolloids (polysaccharides and proteins) and lipids, used alone or in combination to formulate edible films/coatings loaded with probiotics. Plasticizers and surfactants are usually required to formulate these edible films/coatings. The reported antimicrobial effects of probiotic-loaded edible films/coating and quality parameters of coated fruit and vegetables could vary according to the characteristics of the materials used in their formulation, loaded probiotic strain and its dose. The antimicrobial effects of these films/coatings could be linked to the action of various metabolites produced by embedded probiotic cells with inhibitory effects on microorganisms contaminating fruit and vegetable surfaces. The implication of the use of probiotic-loaded edible films/coatings should be their antimicrobial effects against pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms and efficacy to control the ripening of fruit and vegetables, helping the coated products to maintain their safety, quality, nutritional and functional characteristics for a more prolonged storage period.

ABSTRACT

Acne vulgaris is the most recurring skin condition in the world, causing great harm to the physical and psychological well-being of many patients. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has broad therapeutic applicability. The purpose was to evaluate in vitro the photodynamic inactivation against Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) biofilms by using different concentrations of hypericin (Hypericum perforatum) photosensitizer associated with different energies of low-level laser. The biofilms were placed in 96-well microplates with a 6.4-mm diameter surface, by using standard suspensions (2 × 107 CFU/mL) and grown in brain heart infusion broth (BHI) for 48 h in anaerobic chamber. Subsequently, the control group received application of 0.9% sterile saline solution for 3 min; the photosensitising groups received hypericin at concentrations of 5 and 15 µg/mL for 3 min; the laser groups received irradiation of energies of 3 and 5 J (660 nm, continuous output, 100 mW, 30 and 50 s and 100 J/cm2 and 166 J/cm2, respectively); the aPDT groups received 5 and 15 µg/mL concentrations of hypericin associated with energies of 3 and 5 J of low-level laser irradiation. After the biofilms were broken up and seeded for CFU counting. The results showed a reduction in P. acnes biofilms after aPDT emphasising that 15 µg/mL hypericin associated with 3 and 5 J laser irradiation reduced biofilms by 14.1 and 27.9%, respectively. In addition, all groups of aPDT demostrated statistically significant reductions. In vitro photodynamic inactivation against P. acnes biofilms using different concentration of hypericin photosensitizer associated with different energies of low-level laser promoted effective antimicrobial action.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of three irrigation systems: EndoActivator, passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), and Easy Clean in the reduction of Enterococcus faecalis, after instrumentation with the reciprocating system, through microbiological collection and culture method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 60 extracted human lower premolars were used and standardized at 16 mm in length. The teeth were accessed, contaminated with E. faecalis, and incubated for 21 days at 37°C. Initial collections (S1) were made with an absorbent paper cone to confirm the contamination; subsequently, instrumentation was performed with WaveOne Primary. The teeth were divided into four groups according to the final irrigation protocol (n = 15): group 1. EndoActivator; group 2, PUI; group 3, Easy Clean; and group 4, control group irrigated with saline solution sterile and without agitation. In the final irrigation, the agitation of the 17% ethylene amine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) solutions was used, then 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); in both for this, three cycles of 20 seconds each. After the chemical-mechanical preparation and agitation of the irrigating solutions, the final collections (S2) for counting the colony-forming units (CFU/mL) occurred. RESULTS: The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that all the agitation systems reduced by 100% and the control group by 65.7%. CONCLUSION: The control group presented a significantly higher amount of CFU/mL after the chemical-mechanical preparation than the other groups, which were similar to each other (p > 0.05).

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Postoperative pain control after endodontic treatment is important to maintain patient comfort. AIM: The aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the postoperative symptomatology of endodontic treatments performed in a single session, with or without photodynamic therapy (PDT), using Reciproc #40 file in necrotic unirradicular anterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a prospective clinical study, 40 teeth indicated for endodontic treatment were treated by a single endodontist according to a preestablished protocol. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups (n = 20): control group (CG) and laser group (LG). After 24 h, 72 h, and 1 week of endodontic treatment, patients' pain symptomatology was evaluated through a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) ranging from 0 to 10, in which 0 corresponds to no pain and 10 indicates extreme pain. In both workgroups, similar protocols were used for instrumentation with the Reciproc system (R40), irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, and filling by the gutta-percha plastification technique, in which the CG did not use PDT, and the LG used PDT after the instrumentation sequence. After the visit, the patients were given a prescription for ibuprofen 400 mg to be taken every 6 h if they experienced pain. RESULTS: The results of the study, analyzing the VAS, did not show any difference in pain symptoms between the groups at 24 h, 72 h, and 1 week (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that there was no statistical difference between the groups.

ABSTRACT

The endodontic therapy consists of: coronary opening, modeling, cleaning, disinfection, and three-dimensional sealing of the root canal system. Between the constituent stages of the treatment, the analysis of the internal anatomy of the teeth to be treated, must be carefully observed and follow the scientific and biological principles to minimize the chances of faults and accidents. Errors can occur due to lack of skill of the professional, anatomy of the element to be treated or characteristic of the instruments. In cases where there are teeth with periapical lesions, due to calcified or obstructed channels by fractured instruments, failure of conventional treatment and impossibility of retreatment, paraendodonic surgery is indicated as an option for treatment. The aim of the present study is to describe a clinical case report on para-endodontic surgery as a treatment for periapical injury and surgical maneuver for the removal of a fractured instrument in the apical third of tooth 22. Conclusion: when conventional treatment is impossible to perform, Para-endodontic surgery is an optimal treatment option for teeth with periapical lesions and for the removal of fractured instruments, being a way to preserve the dental organ and avoid precipitated extractions. In the present study it was possible to observe radiographically the regression of the periapical lesion and clinically the absence of symptomatology(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The present study investigated the frequency and magnitude of neutralizing antibodies to rabies virus (RABV) in dogs with and without historic of vaccination in Santa Maria/RS. Group A included serum samples from 440 dogs with recent historic of vaccination against rabies, obtained during the 2015 rabies vaccination campaign. Group B included 300 serum samples from dogs submitted to the Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in 2015, whose historic of rabies vaccination was unknown. Serum samples were submitted to the rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test (RFFIT) to detect neutralizing antibodies against RABV. In group A, 70.6% (310/440) of the samples had neutralizing antibody titers ≥0.5 international units per milliliter (IU mL-1), considered an indicative of protection against rabies by the World Health Organization. However, approximately 30% of the dogs did not contain antibodies in adequate levels. In group B, 42.3% (127/300) of the samples contained neutralizing antibody titers ≥0.5IU mL-1 and 57.7% (173/300) were negative or contained titers below of the value considered immunized. These results demonstrate that an important proportion of vaccinated dogs (~30%) did not develop adequate antibody levels, mainly those receiving a single vaccine dose. Serologic testing of animals with unknown historic of vaccination revealed relatively low vaccine coverage in the general dog population. Thus, reformulation of immunization strategies - especially the recommendation of a boost vaccination 30 days after the primary dose - and extension of vaccination campaigns are necessary to reach adequate levels and coverage of immunity against RABV in the canine population.

ABSTRACT

Background. Byrsonima is a promising neotropical genus, rich in flavonoids and triterpenes, with several proven pharmacological properties. Nevertheless, Byrsonima duckeana W. R. Anderson is an Amazonian species almost not studied. Objective. To assess the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activities of Byrsonima duckeana leaves. Materials and Methods. We analyzed an ethanol extract and its fractions for polyphenol content and UHPLC-MS/MS, phosphomolybdenum, DPPH, TBARS antioxidant tests, formalin-induced pain, carrageenan-induced peritonitis, acetic acid-induced abdominal writhings, and hot plate assays. Results. All the samples showed high polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity in the phosphomolybdenum, DPPH, and TBARS tests. We identified ethyl gallate, quinic acid, gallic acid, catechin, epicatechin, quercetrin, and quercetin in the samples. B. duckeana was able to reduce leukocyte migration in the carrageenan-induced peritonitis by 43% and the licking time in the formalin test by 57%. In the acetic acid-induced writhing test, the chloroform (FCL) and ethyl acetate (FEA) fractions were the most active samples. FEA was selected for the hot plate test, where all the dosages tested (5, 50, and 200 mg·kg-1) showed significant analgesic activity. Conclusion. B. duckeana has interesting analgesic and antioxidant activities, due to its high phenolic content, especially phenolic acids.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Childhood linear immunoglobulin A dermatosis is a rare autoimmune vesiculobullous disease. It results in linear deposition of autoantibodies (immunoglobulin A) against antigens in the basal membrane zone, leading to subepidermal cleavage. Additional depositions of immunoglobulin G and complement-3 might occur. It is still debated whether concomitant findings of immunoglobulins A and G should be considered a subtype of this dermatosis or a new entity. Further studies are needed to recognize this clinical variant.

ABSTRACT

Taxanes are drugs used to treat many types of cancer, including breast and lung cancer. The most common side effects of these drugs are neutropenia and mucositis. Signs of skin toxicity are observed in about 65% of cases and include alopecia, hypersensitivity reactions, persistent supravenous erythematous eruption, nail changes, scleroderma reactions and others. We report two cases of skin reaction to docetaxel and warn that it is not necessary to interrupt the treatment in these cases.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Cowden's disease or multiple hamartoma syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disease and the main dermatological features are facial trichilemmomas (hamartomas of the follicular infundibula), oral fibroma and benign acral keratoses. The importance of this disease lays in the increased susceptibility to malignization of some lesions, especially breast, thyroid and genitourinary tract. Despite its varied phenotypic expression, this disease is generally unknown. Consequently, many cases are undiagnosed or diagnosis comes at a late stage, which reinforces the importance of an early investigation of the disease so the patient may have periodic check-ups to discover and treat malignancies.
