ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Equations can calculate pulse wave velocity (ePWV) from blood pressure values (BP) and age. The ePWV predicts cardiovascular events beyond carotid-femoral PWV. We aimed to evaluate the correlation between four different equations to calculate ePWV. METHODS: The ePWV was estimated utilizing mean BP (MBP) from office BP (MBPOBP) or 24-hour ambulatory BP (MBP24-hBP). We separated the whole sample into two groups: individuals with risk factors and healthy individuals. The e-PWV was calculated as follows: [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] We calculated the concordance correlation coefficient (Pc) between e1-PWVOBP vs e2-PWVOBP, e1-PWV24-hBP vs e2-PWV24-hBP, and mean values of e1-PWVOBP, e2-PWVOBP, e1-PWV24-hBP and e2-PWV24-hBP. The multilevel regression model determined how much the ePWVs are influenced by age and MBP values. RESULTS: We analyzed data from 1541 individuals; 1374 ones with risk factors and 167 healthy ones. The values are presented for the entire sample, for risk-factor patients and for healthy individuals respectively. The correlation between e1-PWVOBP with e2-PWVOBP and e1-PWV24-hBP with e2-PWV24-hBP was almost perfect. The Pc for e1-PWVOBP vs e2-PWVOBP was 0.996 (0.995-0.996), 0.996 (0.995-0.996), and 0.994 (0.992-0.995); furthermore, it was 0.994 (0.993-0.995), 0.994 (0.994-0.995), 0.987 (0.983-0.990) to the e1-PWV24-hBP vs e2-PWV24-hBP. There were no significant differences between mean values (m/s) for e1-PWVOBP vs e2-PWVOBP 8.98±1.9 vs 8.97±1.8; p = 0.88, 9.14±1.8 vs 9.13±1.8; p = 0.88, and 7.57±1.3 vs 7.65±1.3; p = 0.5; mean values are also similar for e1-PWV24-hBP vs e2-PWV24-hBP, 8.36±1.7 vs 8.46±1.6; p = 0.09, 8.50±1.7 vs 8.58±1.7; p = 0.21 and 7.26±1.3 vs 7.39±1.2; p = 0.34. The multiple linear regression showed that age, MBP, and age2 predicted more than 99.5% of all four e-PWV. CONCLUSION: Our data presents a nearly perfect correlation between the values of two equations to calculate the estimated PWV, whether utilizing office or ambulatory blood pressure.

ABSTRACT

Prior data from our group showed that first-lactation cows under organic management in United States have a high prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and Staphylococcus chromogenes intramammary infections (IMI) in early lactation. Nonetheless, the relationship between IMI, udder health, and milk production in organically reared primiparous cows remains elusive. The objectives of this observational study were to investigate the relationship between presence and persistence of IMI in the first 35 d in milk (DIM) and somatic cell count (SCC) and milk production during the first 6 mo of lactation on first-lactation organic dairy cows. The analysis included a total of 1,348 composite milk samples collected during the first 35 DIM that were submitted for milk culture and 1,674 Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) tests during the first 180 DIM from 333 heifers in 4 organic dairy farms, enrolled between February 2019 and January 2020. The association between IMI in the first 35 DIM and new high SCC (SCC > 200,000 cells/mL) and milk production during the first 6 mo of lactation was investigated using Cox proportional hazards regression and mixed linear regression, respectively. The association between IMI persistence (harboring the same microorganism as reported by the laboratory for 2 or more samples) in the first 35 DIM and number of DHIA tests with high SCC during the first 6 mo of lactation was modeled using negative binomial regression. The presence of IMI by Staph. aureus (hazard ratio [HR] [95% confidence interval {CI}]: 3.35 [2.64, 4.25]) or Streptococcus spp. (HR [95% CI]: 2.25 [2.12, 2.39]) during the first 35 DIM was associated with an increased risk of new high SCC during the first 6 mo of lactation. Milk production was reduced when Streptococcus spp. were identified in milk samples. However, there was no evidence of a difference in milk production in Staph. aureus IMI. Isolation of non-aureus staphylococci and mammaliicocci was related to a mild increase in the hazards of high SCC (HR [95% CI]: 1.34 [0.97, 1.85]) and a decrease in milk production during one or more postpartum tests. Presence of gram-negative or Streptococcus-like organisms IMI was not associated with either high SCC or milk production. Presence of Bacillus IMI was associated with a lower hazard of new high SCC (HR [95% CI]: 0.45 [0.30, 0.68]), and higher milk production during the first 180 d of lactation (overall estimate [95% CI]: 1.7 kg/d [0.3, 3.0]). The persistence of IMI in the first 35 DIM was associated with the number of tests with high SCC during the lactation for all microorganisms except for Staphylococcus chromogenes. Therefore, our results suggest that the persistence of IMI in the first 35 DIM could be an important factor to understand the association between IMI detected in early lactation and lactational SCC and milk production in organic dairy heifers. Our study described associations between IMI, udder health, and milk production in first-lactation organic dairy cows that are consistent with findings from conventional dairy farms.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have shown that organically raised dairy cows have an increased prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus compared with conventionally raised dairy cows. However, little information exists about the dynamics of intramammary infection (IMI) in primiparous cows during early lactation on organic dairy farms. The objective of this study was to describe the IMI dynamics of primiparous cows on certified organic farms during early lactation. This longitudinal study enrolled 503 primiparous cows from 5 organic dairy farms from February 2019 to January 2020. Quarter-level milk samples were collected aseptically on a weekly basis during the first 5 wk of lactation. Samples were pooled by cow and time point into composite samples inside a sterilized laminar hood and submitted for microbiological culture. For each of the different microorganisms identified, we estimated the prevalence in each postpartum sample, period prevalence (PP), cumulative incidence, and persistence of IMI. Logistic regression models were used to investigate whether the prevalence of IMI differed by farm or sampling time points and whether IMI persistence differed between detected microorganisms. Our findings revealed a high prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus (PP = 18.9%), non-aureus staphylococci and closely related mammaliicoccal species (PP = 52.1%), and Streptococcus spp. and Streptococcus-like organisms (PP = 32.1%) within the study population. The prevalence of these microorganisms varied significantly between farms. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus chromogenes exhibited significantly higher IMI persistence compared with other detected bacterial taxa, confirming the divergent epidemiological behavior in terms of IMI chronicity across different microorganisms. This study improves our understanding of the epidemiology of mastitis-causing pathogens in organically raised primiparous cows, which can be used to tailor mastitis control plans for this unique yet growing subpopulation of dairy cows.

ABSTRACT

Resistant hypertension (RH) is characterized by being difficult to control, even with the use of various antihypertensive drugs and is associated with target organ lesions and other comorbidities. Thus, new treatment alternatives such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) can offer benefits to resistant hypertensive patients by reducing blood pressure (BP) in a non-invasive way and without the need for the association of more antihypertensive drugs. In this case, a patient with RH was submitted to three weekly applications of TENS on the stellate ganglion lasting 40 min each for 1 month. Peripheral and central hemodynamic assessments were performed by 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) before and after TENS applications. After completion of the TENS applications, significant reductions in office systolic (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were observed. There was also a decrease in peripheral SBP and DBP in the 24-h ABPM and sleep and SBP during wakefulness. Additionally, central parameters including central SBP and pulse wave velocity presented a significant reduction in the 24-h ABPM, during the wakefulness and sleep. TENS is able to attenuate the sympathetic hyperactivity present in RH cases and decrease the peripheral and central hemodynamic parameters of a resistant hypertensive patient.

ABSTRACT

Tropical forests face increasing climate risk1,2, yet our ability to predict their response to climate change is limited by poor understanding of their resistance to water stress. Although xylem embolism resistance thresholds (for example, [Formula: see text]50) and hydraulic safety margins (for example, HSM50) are important predictors of drought-induced mortality risk3-5, little is known about how these vary across Earth's largest tropical forest. Here, we present a pan-Amazon, fully standardized hydraulic traits dataset and use it to assess regional variation in drought sensitivity and hydraulic trait ability to predict species distributions and long-term forest biomass accumulation. Parameters [Formula: see text]50 and HSM50 vary markedly across the Amazon and are related to average long-term rainfall characteristics. Both [Formula: see text]50 and HSM50 influence the biogeographical distribution of Amazon tree species. However, HSM50 was the only significant predictor of observed decadal-scale changes in forest biomass. Old-growth forests with wide HSM50 are gaining more biomass than are low HSM50 forests. We propose that this may be associated with a growth-mortality trade-off whereby trees in forests consisting of fast-growing species take greater hydraulic risks and face greater mortality risk. Moreover, in regions of more pronounced climatic change, we find evidence that forests are losing biomass, suggesting that species in these regions may be operating beyond their hydraulic limits. Continued climate change is likely to further reduce HSM50 in the Amazon6,7, with strong implications for the Amazon carbon sink.

ABSTRACT

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most frequent endocrine conditions during pregnancy. GDM is linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes and has implications for maternal health. Studies have demonstrated the link between pathogenic periodontal bacteria, glycemic control, and the risk of diabetes. The objective of the current study is to perform a mini-review of the available literature on the potential changes in the oral microbiota of women with GDM. The review was conducted by two independent reviewers (LLF and JDC). Indexed electronic databases (PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus) were searched, including articles published in English and Portuguese. A manual search was also performed to identify related articles. The oral microbial community of pregnant women with GDM is unique from that of healthy pregnant women. The majority of the alterations found in the oral microbiota of women with GDM point to a pro-inflammatory environment with high levels of bacteria associated with periodontitis (Prevotella, Treponema, anaerobic bacteria) and a depletion of bacteria associated with periodontal health maintenance (Firmicutes, Streptococcus, Leptotrichia). More well-designed studies differentiating between pregnant women with good oral health and those with periodontitis are needed to ascertain which differences are due to GDM or periodontitis.

ABSTRACT

Bioethical limitations impair deeper studies in human placental physiology, then most studies use human term placentas or murine models. To overcome these challenges, new models have been proposed to mimetize the placental three-dimensional microenvironment. The placental extracellular matrix plays an essential role in several processes, being a part of the establishment of materno-fetal interaction. Regarding these aspects, this study aimed to investigate term mice placental ECM components, highlighting its collagenous and non-collagenous content, and proposing a potential three-dimensional model to mimetize the placental microenvironment. For that, 18.5-day-old mice placenta, both control and decellularized (n = 3 per group) were analyzed on Orbitrap Fusion Lumos spectrometer (ThermoScientific) and LFQ intensity generated on MaxQuant software. Proteomic analysis identified 2317 proteins. Using ECM and cell junction-related ontologies, 118 (5.1%) proteins were filtered. Control and decellularized conditions had no significant differential expression on 76 (64.4%) ECM and cell junction-related proteins. Enriched ontologies in the cellular component domain were related to cell junction, collagen and lipoprotein particles, biological process domain, cell adhesion, vasculature, proteolysis, ECM organization, and molecular function. Enriched pathways were clustered in cell adhesion and invasion, and labyrinthine vasculature regulation. These preserved ECM proteins are responsible for tissue stiffness and could support cell anchoring, modeling a three-dimensional structure that may allow placental microenvironment reconstruction.

Introduction: Hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and a leading public health concern. Objectives: The primary aim was to compare sequential nephron blockade (SNB) versus dual renin-angiotensin system blockade (DRASB) plus bisoprolol in patients with resistant hypertension to observe reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) levels after 20 weeks of treatment. Material and Methods: This trial was an open-label, prospective, randomized, parallel-group, clinical study with optional drug up-titration. Participants were evaluated during five visits at 28-day intervals. Results: The mean age was 55.5 years in the SNB and 58.4 years in the DRASB + bisoprolol group (p=NS). Significant office BP reductions were observed in both groups. SNB group, SBP decreased from 174.5±21.0 to 127.0±14.74 mmHg (p<0.0001), and DBP decreased from 105.3±15.5 to 78.11±9.28 mmHg (p<0.0001). DRASB group, SBP decreased from 178.4±21.08 to 134.4 ± 23.25 mmHg (p<0.0001) and DBP decreased from 102.7±11.07 to 77.33±13.75 mmHg (p<0.0001). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) showed also significant SBP and DBP reductions in both groups (p<0.0001). Conclusion: In patients with RHTN adherent to treatment, SNB and DRASB plus bisoprolol showed excellent therapeutic efficacy, although SNB was associated with earlier SBP reduction.

Introduction: Hypertension and kidney function are closely related. However, there are few studies on renal function during acute elevation of blood pressure (BP), denominated hypertensive crisis (HC). Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between renal function and inflammatory cytokines in HC, subdivided into hypertensive urgency (HUrg) and emergency (HEmerg). Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in 74 normotensive (NT) and 74 controlled hypertensive individuals (ContrHT) followed up in outpatient care. Additionally, 78 subjects with hypertensive emergency (HEmerg) and 50 in hypertensive urgency (HUrg), attended in emergency room, were also evaluated. Hypertensive crisis was classified into HEmerg, defined by systolic blood pressure (BP) ≥ 180 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ≥ 120 mmHg in presence of target-organ damage (TOD), and HypUrg, clinical situation with BP elevation without TOD. The glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was estimated, and cytokine levels were measured. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis or Mann-Whitney test and Spearman's correlation, with significant differences p-value < 0.05. Results: The median age was 53.5 years in the NT group (52 female), 61 years in the ContrHT group (52 female), and 62.5 years in the HC group (63 female) (p-value < 0.0001). The median BP was 118.5/75 mmHg for NT, 113.5/71 for ContrHT, and 198.5/120 mmHg for HC, respectively (p-value < 0.0001 among groups). BP and heart rate levels were significantly higher in the HC group compared to the NT and ContrHT groups (P < 0.001 for all). The eGFR was significantly lower in HC group compared to the NT and ContrHT groups. The cytokine levels were higher in the HEmerg and HUrg groups compared to ContrHT group (P < 0.0001, except for IL-1ß in HUrg vs. ContrHT), without difference between the acute elevation of BP groups. Thus, all cytokines were significantly elevated in patients with HC compared to the control groups (NT and ContrHT). There was a negative correlation between eGFR and the cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and TNF-α) in the HC group. Conclusion: Elevated inflammatory cytokines are associated with reduced eGFR in individuals with HC compared to control groups, suggesting that the inflammatory process participates in the pathogenesis of acute elevations of BP.

Background: Due to the large number of publications relating the occurrence of dental microcracks to endodontic procedures, this bibliometric study evaluated the scientific pattern and trends in literature and provided an overview of scientific production in this context. Aim: To analyze, quantify, and characterize the scientific production and trends of published articles evaluating dentinal microcracks formation after endodontic treatment procedures between 2010 and 2020 using bibliometric indicators. Materials and Methods: Published articles were found by the search in the Medline (PubMed) and Scopus database using the combination of the following keywords: Dentinal crack OR Dentinal Microcrack OR Crack formation OR Dentin Defect AND Endodontic treatment OR Root canal preparation OR Canal Preparation OR Root canal treatment OR endodontic procedures. The search was also conducted in the Journal of Endodontics and International Endodontic Journal. After inclusion and exclusion criteria application, data from all studies included were collected. Results: Among the 556 results after the search, 45 studies were included and analyzed in this bibliometry. No trend was observed in terms of the increasing number of articles over time. Most of them used an in vitro design, compared the effect of different endodontic techniques/systems for root canal instrumentation on dentinal microcracks formation, and were conducted in Turkey, Brazil, and India. Journal of Endodontics and International Endodontic Journal were the main journals with a higher number of articles published. Interestingly, studies conducted with some funding did not lead to higher citation numbers. Moreover, a relevant proportion of studies did not consider the inclusion of control groups, baseline evaluation, or statistical analysis. Micro-CT was the main technique used to evaluate microcrack presence. Conclusion: Microcrack formation after the use of different endodontic techniques/systems has been constantly evaluated in the literature. There is a pattern of methodologies used, which may explain the concentration of these studies in specific journals and countries.

ABSTRACT

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are crucial for tissue homeostasis and repair, secreting vesicles to the extracellular environment. Isolated exosomes were shown to affect angiogenesis, immunomodulation and tissue regeneration. Numerous efforts have been dedicated to describe the mechanism of action of these extracellular vesicles (EVs) and guarantee their safety, since the final aim is their therapeutic application in the clinic. The major advantage of applying MSC-derived EVs is their low or inexistent immunogenicity, prompting their use as drug delivery or therapeutic agents, as well as wound healing, different cancer types, and inflammatory processes in the neurological and cardiovascular systems. MSC-derived EVs display no vascular obstruction effects or apparent adverse effects. Their nano-size ensures their passage through the blood-brain barrier, demonstrating no cytotoxic or immunogenic effects. Several in vitro tests have been conducted with EVs obtained from different sources to understand their biology, molecular content, signaling pathways, and mechanisms of action. Application of EVs to human therapies has recently become a reality, with clinical trials being conducted to treat Alzheimer's disease, retina degeneration, and COVID-19 patients. Herein, we describe and compare the different extracellular vesicles isolation methods and therapeutic applications regarding the tissue repair and regeneration process, presenting the latest clinical trial reports.

ABSTRACT

Metals are one of the contaminants released from the increase of anthropic activities. They can be classified as endocrine disruptors once they can affect the reproductive parameters of different organisms. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential effects of cadmium on regulatory reproduction axis (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal-Liver, the HPGL axis) in females of Rhamdia quelen exposed to nominal concentrations of 0.1; 1; 10 and 100 µg.L-1 of cadmium. After 15 days, tissues were collected for hormonal quantification, brain aromatase (cyp19a1b), hepatic vitellogenin (vtg) gene expression, and biomarkers analysis. Cadmium was quantified in water, gonad and liver samples. The plasma levels of estradiol, testosterone and gonad and hepatosomatic indexes did not changed after Cd exposure. The cyp19a1b was not different among the groups. Cadmium was detected at higher concentrations in the liver compared to the gonads. No genotoxicity was observed, only erythrocytes nuclear alterations. Metallothionein was reduced at 10 µg.L-1 in the liver and 10 and 100 µg.L-1 in the gonad. Hepatic superoxide dismutase activity increased and this can lead to a hydrogen peroxide increase, one of reactive oxygen species. This increase without a compensation of other enzymes of the antioxidant system can lead to lipoperoxidation, as occurred at 100 µg.L-1. Hepatic vitellogenin gene expression increased as well as the injury index at 0,1 and 100 µg.L-1. The tested cadmium concentrations have been found in the freshwater ecosystems and can affect the female reproductive regulation axis HPGL of the Neotropical species R. quelen.

ABSTRACT

Introdução: Em 11 de março de 2020 foi declarada pela Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) a pandemia da doença pelo coronavírus 2019 (covid-19), responsável por causar infecção respiratória aguda, potencialmente grave e de alta transmissibilidade, o que elevou mundialmente o número de óbitos. Métodos: Trata-se de uma pesquisa documental, aplicada, de abordagem quantitativa e transversal, de coleta e análise de dados de casos notificados, no período de março de 2020 a julho de 2021, nos sistemas e-SUS Notifica (casos de síndrome gripal) e Sivep-Gripe (casos de síndrome respiratória aguda grave e óbitos) do município de Araçatuba (SP), no Noroeste Paulista. As variáveis analisadas foram sexo, faixa etária, presença de comorbidades, desfecho (cura ou óbito) e vacinação. As taxas de letalidade geral e específica foram calculadas, bem como a média móvel de casos e óbitos por semana epidemiológica de ocorrência. Resultados: Foram obtidos 28.890 casos confirmados, dos quais 13.210 do sexo masculino e 15.680 do sexo feminino. Dos 894 óbitos, 482 ocorreram em homens. A letalidade entre pessoas com doença neurológica prévia foi de 50%. Todos os vacinados que vieram a óbito tinham mais de 60 anos e 82,87% possuíam pelo menos um fator de risco. Conclusões: A análise do perfil epidemiológico dos acometidos, da evolução e da gravidade foi de fundamental importância para se determinar e adequar estratégias de mitigação e planejamento de ações e cuidados de saúde no combate ao SARS-CoV-2 no município.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of a postpartum oral calcium supplementation strategy in multiparous Jersey cows on (1) the odds of clinical mastitis in the first 60 days in milk (DIM); (2) the odds of culling up to 60 DIM; (3) the risk of pregnancy in the first 150 DIM; (4) milk production in the first 15 weeks of lactation. A randomized clinical trial was performed in a dairy herd located in west Texas, United States. A total of 809 cows were used in the final analyses. Overall, postpartum oral calcium supplementation did not influence milk production, reproductive performance, or culling. Among second parity cows, oral calcium supplementation tended to decrease the odds of clinical mastitis in the first 60 DIM compared to controls; however, no differences were observed for cows in parities three and greater. To date, data evaluating the effect of postpartum oral calcium supplementation in multiparous Jersey cows are limited. In our study, oral calcium supplementation tended to reduce clinical mastitis in second parity cows. No positive benefits based on the reduction of culling, and improvement of milk production and reproductive performance were evident for the herd included in this study.

BACKGROUND: The causal relationship between systemic arterial hypertension and target organ damage (TOD) is well known, as well as the association with cardiovascular risk factors (CV). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is important in monitoring hypertension and assessing the risk of TOD. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between blood pressure (BP) and clinical and biochemical parameters in the development of TOD in hypertensive patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study with 162 hypertensive patients followed for an average period of 13 years. The TOD investigated were left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), microalbuminuria, coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke. Blood pressure was assessed by ABPM and LVH using echocardiogram and electrocardiogram, respectively. Biochemical-metabolic tests and 24-hour microalbuminuria were performed at baseline and follow-up. The P-value <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: The average age was 69±11.8 years, with a predominance of women (64.8%), white ethnicity (79.6%) and diabetics (78.4%). ABPM showed a significant reduction in BP values during follow-up, although without association with TOD (microalbuminuria, stroke, and CAD), except for LVH that showed a correlation with sleep BP ≥120/70 mmHg (P=0.044). The most frequent TODs were LVH (29.6%), microalbuminuria (26.5%), CAD (19.8%) and stroke (17.3%). In the follow-up, there was an association between LVH and diabetes; microalbuminuria was associated with diabetes and triglycerides; stroke was associated with HDL-cholesterol (HDL-c), microalbuminuria and carotid disease. CAD showed a relationship with age and HDL-c. CONCLUSION: Predictive factors for TOD are age, microalbuminuria, diabetes, HDL-c, triglycerides and carotid disease. Nocturnal BP is correlated with LVH. The absence of a relationship between ABPM and other TODs can be explained by the use of effective drugs, improvement of metabolic and blood pressure parameters.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to simulate the different positions of the hyrax appliance expander screw and evaluate tooth displacement and the stress distribution standard on the periodontal ligament using the finite element method. METHODS: Part of the maxilla with anchorage teeth, periodontal ligament, midpalatal suture, and the hyrax appliance was modeled, and finite element method models were created to simulate 6 different screw positions. There were 2 vertical positions at distances of 20 mm and 15 mm from the occlusal plane. Another position was anteroposterior, the center of the screw placed between and equidistant from the mesial face of the first molar and the distal face of the first premolar, aligned to the center of the crown of the first molar, with the anterior edge of the screw aligned to the distal face of the first molar. A 1 mm activation of the expander screw was simulated. The displacement (total, vertical, and buccolingual) and the stress distribution on the periodontal ligament of supporting teeth in each model were registered. RESULTS: The model simulating the expander screw in a more occlusal and anterior position presented higher displacement values and higher stress concentration, followed by the model with the screw in a more posterior but same vertical position. With the exception of the first premolar, the teeth presented cervical-apical displacement in the vestibular face and apical-cervical displacement in palatal faces. This displacement is compatible with the vestibular inclination associated with the activation of the expander screw. The first premolar presented an atypical tendency for the mesial and lingual displacement of the vestibular surface and counterclockwise rotation. CONCLUSIONS: The supporting teeth presented a tendency for vestibular crown displacement and lingual root displacement associated with compression areas in the vestibular-cervical region and tensile strength in the linguoapical region. Placing the expander screw in a more occlusal and anterior position generated more mechanical stress transfer, resulting in greater dental displacement.

ABSTRACT

Ten male sheep (Sheep group; SGk) and seven male goats (Goat group; GGks+) were used in this study. The objective was to compare the use of racemic ketamine or ketamine S(+) associated with lidocaine on spinal anesthesia and evaluate if the drugs leads to a surgical anesthesia state, as well as to verify the cardiorespiratory, sedative and motor effects of this technique in these species. After correct placement of the needle in the subarachnoid space, 3.0 mg kg-1 of racemic ketamine (SGk) or ketamine S(+) (GGks+), both diluted in 1.5 mg kg-1 of 2% lidocaine, were administered. Evaluations were performed during orchiectomy, at times 0 (T0), 5 (T5), 10 (T10), 20 (T20), 30 (T30) and 60 (T60) minutes after subarachnoid anesthesia administration. No significant changes in heart and respiratory rates were observed in both experimental groups. All animals showed surgical analgesia and stood conscious or slightly sedated with ataxia immediately after the drugs administration (T5), allowing the execution of bilateral orchiectomy. The ataxia in SGk was classified as severe with recumbency in 80% of the animals, moderate ataxia in 10% of the animals, and mild ataxia in 10% of the animals. All goats (GGks+; 100%) presented severe ataxia and recumbency. At 60 min, animals of both groups were in standing position and with normal gait. Subarachnoid RS-ketamine and ketamine S(+) (3 mg kg-1), associated with lidocaine in sheep and goats, produces surgical anesthesia and recumbency without causing cardiorespiratory abnormalities, regurgitation and bloating.

ABSTRACT

The production of biomolecules using agro-industrial by-products as feedstock is a growing trend worldwide. Selenium (Se) is a trace element essential for health, and the Se-enrichment of yeast biomass can enhance its benefits. This study investigated the feasibility of the production of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Se-enriched biomass using a medium composed of corn bran and soybean bran acid hydrolysates as carbon and nitrogen sources in a stirred-tank reactor. After hydrolysis, hydrolysates presented complex composition and high concentrations of sugars, proteins, and minerals. The use of a stirred-tank bioreactor leads to the production of 9 g/L S. cerevisiae biomass enriched with 236.93 µg/g Se, and 99% cell viability. Likewise, the combination of sugarcane molasses and soybean bran hydrolysate was effective for cell growth of a probiotic strain of S. cerevisiae with a 24.08% ß-glucan content. The results demonstrated that starchy acid hydrolysates are low-cost and efficient substrates for the production of yeast biomass and derivate products and may contribute to further studies for a sustainable development of biorefinery technologies.

Infrastructure-free Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) are becoming popular due to their scalability and a wide range of applications. Such systems often rely on deployed Wi-Fi networks. However, their usability may be compromised, either due to scanning restrictions from recent Android versions or the proliferation of 5G technology. This raises the need for new infrastructure-free IPS independent of Wi-Fi networks. In this paper, we propose the use of magnetic field data for IPS, through Deep Neural Networks (DNN). Firstly, a dataset of human indoor trajectories was collected with different smartphones. Afterwards, a magnetic fingerprint was constructed and relevant features were extracted to train a DNN that returns a probability map of a user's location. Finally, two postprocessing methods were applied to obtain the most probable location regions. We asserted the performance of our solution against a test dataset, which produced a Success Rate of around 80%. We believe that these results are competitive for an IPS based on a single sensing source. Moreover, the magnetic field can be used as an additional information layer to increase the robustness and redundancy of current multi-source IPS.
