ABSTRACT

The vertical portion of the canaliculi lacrimalis is surrounded by a muscular framework with the morphology of a sphincter. This framework is built from three different components: a first component of vertical direction placed in front, laterally and dorsally to the vertical portion of the canaliculi, which proceeds from the external face of the os lacrimale and belongs to the pars lacrimalis (pars lacrimalis, fasciculus coronalis); a second component of transversal-lateral direction, which derives from the crista lacrimalis posterior and belongs to the pars lacrimalis (pars lacrimalis, fasciculus caudalis); and a third component of transversal-medial direction, which proceeds from the ligamentum palpebrale laterale and belongs to the pars ciliaris of the musculus orbicularis oculi. The synchronized contraction of these muscular fibres performs a collapsible function on the initial portion of the canaliculi lacrimalis (AU)

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the quality of osseointegration in osteoporotic animals, receiving implants with hydroxyapatite coating. Wistar rats. aged 20 weeks were used. Two groups, control and experimental, were established. The second group was subjected to bilateral ovariectomy to induce osteoporosis. Both groups received intramedullary implants in one of their femora at the age of 36 weeks, the other femur remaining without implant, 12 weeks later, all the animals were sacrificed. Densitometric, histological and morphometric analyses were performed. All the results confirmed a poorer bone response to the implant in the osteoporotic group. However, the bone mineral density and morphometrical values for the implanted osteoporotic group were higher than those observed for the osteoporotic group without the implant, suggesting that the implant stimulates new bone formation and slows down the process of osteoporosis (AU)

ABSTRACT

The behavior of dental tissues from the rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, in association with epithelium from the quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica, has been examined. Adult and embryo rabbits were employed in this study. Dental papillae from teeth at the cap stage from rabbit embryos and dental pulp from adult rabbits were isolated surgically and recombined with skin ectoderm from 72-hour-old quail embryos. The recombined tissues were cultured for 48 hours on semi-solid medium and subsequently removed and placed on chorio-allantoic membranes of 7-day-old chick embryos. Control cultures (dental pulp, dental papillae, and quail ectoderm) showed regression, atrophy, or differentiation according to the phenotype of the tissue. After 8 days in explant culture, heterologous recombinants composed of dental papillae and flank skin ectoderm from quail embryos developed differentiated chimeric tooth structures. It was unclear whether or not enamel was being secreted. The fact that the interactions between the enamel epithelium and the dental papillae are reciprocal is well known. The differentiation of odontoblasts can only occur in the presence of an enamel organ. Thus, the quail epithelium must have been induced to become an enamel organ, the lack of enamel proteins notwithstanding. Apical pulp and root pulp from adult rabbits plus quail ectoderm showed a high degree of regression and atrophy. At around 15 days of gestation, the rabbit dental papillae at the cap stage have already acquired odontogenic potential. By contrast, under the same experimental conditions, the dental pulp from continuous-growth teeth from adult rabbits did not show odontogenic potential.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

ABSTRACT

The relations between the saccus lacrimalis and different portions of the musculus orbicularis oculi were studied in orbital regions of human fetuses sectioned into numbered series. No insertions of the pars lacrimalis or Horner's muscle on the saccus were found. These muscular fibres pass along the dorsal wall of the saccus and are separated from it by the reflex tendon of the ligamentum palpebrale mediale. The only muscular fibres that insert on the saccus are those that approach the anterior face of the saccus and the fornix. The fibres that insert on the anterior face proceed from the deep bundles of the pars preseptalis of the lower eyelids, and those that insert on the fornix derive from the deep bundles of the pars preseptalis of the upper eyelid.

ABSTRACT

The present study is an investigation of the effects of 12- to 96-hours' starvation and 96-hours' starvation plus 48-hours' refeeding on both somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) and cytosolic somatostatin binding sites in rabbit small intestinal mucosa. The SLI concentration increased after 24 h in duodenal and jejunal mucosa, but not in ileal mucosa, and reached its highest value after 96 h of fasting. The number of specific high and low-affinity somatostatin binding sites, but not their affinity, decreased with the duration of fasting in the same gut segments, refeeding of fasted animals resulted in a return to normal control values for small intestine mucosal SLI and somatostatin binding.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the relations between 67 tibia parameters. For this investigation, 30 human tibia of unknown sex and age were examined from the bone collection of the Department of Anatomy of the University of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid). Many tibia parameter relationship were established, which were correlated through statistical analysis. 3 groups of parameters correlations were established: antero-posterior diameters of the diaphysis; perimeters of the diaphysis and width of the proximal extremity of the bone. The authors present the statistical values of all the measurements, which are of great anthropological interest.

ABSTRACT

Somatostatin like immunoreactivity and the density of somatostatin binding sites were measured in stomach (fundus and antrum) from either fed, 12 to 96 hours fasted, or 96 hours fasted plus 48 hours refed rabbits. The somatostatin concentration increased in fundic and antral mucosa after 24 h and reached its highest value after 96 h of fasting. The number of specific somatostatin binding sites with high and low affinity decreased with the duration of fasting. Refeeding of fasted animals resulted in a normalisation to control values of gastric mucosal somatostatin and somatostatin binding.
