ABSTRACT

Antioxidant-rich foods scavenge free radicals and other reactive species, decreasing the risk of different non-communicable chronic diseases. The objective of this study was to review the content of total antioxidant capacity of commonly foods comparing with experimental data and to explore the health benefits due to foods with moderate to high TAC. The TAC was analytically measured using the "Total Antioxidant Capacity" (NX2332) test from Randox® (UK) by spectrometry at 600 nm. Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa), "guaraná" (Paullinia cupana Kunth) powder, ready to drink boiled coffee (Coffea arabica L.), and milk chocolate (made from seeds of Theobroma cacao) had the highest TAC values, followed by collard greens (Brassica oleracea L.), beets (Beta vulgaris L.), apples (Malus domestica Borkh.), bananas (Musa paradisiaca), common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), oranges (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), onions (Allium cepa L.), and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Other foods also showed antioxidant capacity. The binomial antioxidant capacity of foods and health was extensively discussed according to science literature. Based on the high TAC content of Brazil nuts, guaraná, coffee, chocolate, collard greens, apples, beets, beans, oranges, onions and other foods, their regular dietary intake is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of chronic non-communicable diseases.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: During the aging process, cardiovascular function suffers intense changes. Objective: To perform an echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricular function in elderly male athletes and non-athletes. Methods: Eleven elderly males were separated into two groups: group A, with six non-athletes (61.66 ± 3.20y) and group B, with eight athletes (62.75 ± 3.24y). Two-dimensional and M mode color Doppler echocardiography were used to assess heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), diastolic dimension (DD), systolic dimension (SD), end diastolic volume (EDV), end systolic volume (ESV), mass of the left ventricle (M), isovolumetric relaxation time (IRT), and deceleration time (DT). Results: HR was significantly higher in Group A. The mean values of EDV, ESV, and DT were significantly higher in athletes (Group B). IRT and SV values were higher in Group A; and DD, DS and M trended to be higher in Group B, but without any statistical significance. Conclusions: The regular practice of running improved both hemodynamic and structural variables in elderly subjects.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease considered an important public health problem. In recent years, its prevalence has been exponentially rising in many developing countries. Chronic complications of DM are important causes of morbidity and mortality among patients, which impair their health and quality of life. Knowledge on disease prevention, etiology, and management is essential to deal with parents, patients, and caregivers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge regarding DM in an adult population from a Middle-western Brazilian city. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study covering 178 adults, aged 18-64 years, who answered a diabetes knowledge questionnaire. In order to identify the difference between groups, analysis of variance was used. RESULTS: Higher knowledge scores were found regarding the role of sugars on DM causality, diabetic foot care, and the effects of DM on patients (blindness, impaired wound healing, and male sexual dysfunction). However, lower scores were found amongst types of DM, hyperglycemic symptoms, and normal blood glucose levels. Females tended to achieve better knowledge scores than males. CONCLUSION: Women had better knowledge regarding types of DM, normal blood glucose values, and consequences of hyperglycemia revealed that diabetes education should be improved.

ABSTRACT

Appropriate filling of prescriptions is fundamental to the rational use of medicines. It is known that the use of psychotropic substances has increased greatly in the last decade throughout the world. Given the importance of prescribing in drug treatment, the aim of this study was to investigate the fulfillment of Brazilian Health Ministry regulation SVS/MS Nº 344/98 by health professionals in the city of Pontal do Araguaia (MT), regarding prescription and dispensing of psychotropic drugs included on List B1. To this end, 249 notifications of prescriptions dispensed in the Municipal Basic Pharmacy in 2010 were analyzed. All analyzed notifications were handwritten, 83.5% were legible and abbreviations were found in all prescriptions. The address of the prescribing doctor was absent in 1.6% and no prescription showed the prescriber?s phone number; the name of the patient was absent in 0.8% and the address in 90.0%. In 18.0% of prescriptions the drugs names did not follow the Brazilian Common Denomination; 1.2% of prescriptions did not report the dose and 15.5% did not contain instructions on dosing practice; 6.8% had no identification of the buyer. In 52.2%, there was no name of the issuing agency; the address of the buyer was absent in 4.0% of all prescriptions, while 80.7% lacked the phone number of the buyer. None of the prescriptions contained the name and address of the pharmacy, the name of the person responsible for dispensing, the quantity dispensed, the date of dispensing or the registering identification. As a serious failure of the printing services, 41.8% of the prescribing blocks did not contain the sanitary authorization number. Benzodiazepines were the most frequently prescribed drug class, diazepam being the most dispensed (70.4%). Females accounted for the majority of the benzodiazepine consumers (72.8%). General practitioners were the major prescribers of psychotropic medications (61.0%). A greater awareness is needed on the part of both prescribers and dispensers of the need to comply with legal aspects of prescribing, in order to prevent medication errors and drug misuse, ensuring quality in patient care.

ABSTRACT

Diabetes represents a serious health problem. In the diabetic state, alterations in metabolism, increased susceptibility to infections and immunological changes occur. The suppression of the immune response has been identified as a relevant factor that contributes to the increase in the rate of infections in these patients. At the same time, breast cancer is the most frequent malignant tumor in women. The molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cancer development have revealed that immune cells functionally regulate epithelial cancer development and progression. Breastfeeding has been hypothesized to reduce the risk of breast cancer. However, early systematic reviews have not yielded consistent findings for this association. The demand for human milk is increasing due to the promotion and consumer acceptance of the health benefits of consuming a natural product rich in bioactive components. However, due to changes in glucose metabolism, the components of the milk from diabetic women are modified depending on the time of evaluation. In this literature review, we summarize important new findings revealing the paradoxical role of breastfeeding in preventing the onset of breast cancer in diabetic mothers. We hypothesized that the milk component production in diabetic mothers is affected by changes in glucose metabolism. Therefore, adequate maternal glycemic control and an adequate duration of breastfeeding for diabetic mothers are crucial to ensure that the immunity components are able to confer protection against breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The objective of this article was to review the biochemical basis of the total antioxidant capacity test and its applications in biochemical, physiological, nutritional, and clinical studies. Measurement of the total antioxidant capacity is feasible to evaluate the antioxidant content of foods and the nutritional antioxidant status. Acute non-regular physical exercise and body exposition to high altitudes have been associated to a considerable decrease on blood TAC levels. The TAC is reduced in many pathophysiological conditions and diseases such as atherosclerosis, acute myocardial infarction, tobacco exposure, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, and metabolic X syndrome. The test is also an important tool in exercise physiology studies as well on the evaluation of many diferent chronic and metabolic diseases.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to evaluate the modulatory effect of melatonin on superoxide release by spleen macrophages isolated from alloxan-induced diabetic insulin treated or non-treated rats. METHODS: Blood glucose, body weight, CuZn-superoxide dismutase concentration, and superoxide release by spleen macrophages were evaluated. RESULTS: The spontaneous superoxide release from the macrophages of the control group was lower when compared to diabetic rats without insulin treatment. Melatonin (MLT) significantly increased the superoxide release in the control group (11.5 +/- 1.5 with MLT x 6.8 +/- 1.0 without MLT). The macrophages from diabetic rats treated with insulin exhibited a decreased superoxide release (7.0 +/- 2.4), when compared to superoxide release of the macrophages from diabetic rats without insulin (14.7 +/- 3.7). CuZn-SOD concentrations were increased in both diabetic groups. CONCLUSION: The pineal hormone melatonin in physiological concentration can stimulate natural immunity since it triggers the superoxide release from the macrophages, an important anti-infectious mechanism. On the other side, melatonin had antioxidant effects in the macrophages from insulin-treated alloxan-induced diabetic rats (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, Ref. 51).

ABSTRACT

Outro ingrediente presente no vinho - o etanol - reforça a proteção cardiovascular.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare the influence of two heating methods on the lipid quality of hot dogs. Four different sausage formulations were manufactured using three different types of antioxidants and one control. Each antioxidant was evaluated for storage during 1, 7, 15, 21, 30, 45, and 60 days at-20°C. Each formulation was boiled for 5 minutes or heatd in a 700-Watt microwave oven for 1 minute at half power and then submitted to an untrained panel of 30 tasters. The paired preference and acceptance tests were used to compare sensory preferences between the two heating methods. A 9 point hedonic scale was employed to evaluate the acceptability of the hot dogs that presented the highest scores in the previous test...
