ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict cancer survival have recently been reported for a number of sarcoma subtypes, but none have investigated undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS). ML is a powerful tool that has the potential to better prognosticate UPS. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried for cases of histologically confirmed undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) (n = 665). Patient, tumor, and treatment characteristics were recorded, and ML models were developed to predict 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival. The best performing ML model was externally validated using an institutional cohort of UPS patients (n = 151). RESULTS: All ML models performed best at the 1-year time point and worst at the 5-year time point. On internal validation within the SEER cohort, the best models had c-statistics of 0.67-0.69 at the 5-year time point. The Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network (MLP) model was the best performing model and used for external validation. Similarly, the MLP model performed best at 1-year and worst at 5-year on external validation with c-statistics of 0.85 and 0.81, respectively. The MLP model was well calibrated on external validation. The MLP model has been made publicly available at https://rachar.shinyapps.io/ups_app/ . CONCLUSION: Machine learning models perform well for survival prediction in UPS, though this sarcoma subtype may be more difficult to prognosticate than other subtypes. Future studies are needed to further validate the machine learning approach for UPS prognostication.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate the capability of fabricating extremely high-bandwidth Uni-Traveling Carrier Photodiodes (UTC-PDs) using techniques that are suitable for active-passive monolithic integration with Multiple Quantum Well (MQW)-based photonic devices. The devices achieved a responsivity of 0.27 A/W, a 3-dB bandwidth of 170 GHz, and an output power of -9 dBm at 200 GHz. We anticipate that this work will deliver Photonic Integrated Circuits with extremely high bandwidth for optical communications and millimetre-wave applications.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate the feasibility of monolithic integration of evanescently coupled Uni-Traveling Carrier Photodiodes (UTC-PDs) having a bandwidth exceeding 100 GHz with Multimode Interference (MMI) couplers. This platform is suitable for active-passive, butt-joint monolithic integration with various Multiple Quantum Well (MQW) devices for narrow linewidth millimeter-wave photomixing sources. The fabricated devices achieved a high 3-dB bandwidth of up to 110 GHz and a generated output power of more than 0 dBm (1 mW) at 120 GHz with a flat frequency response over the microwave F-band (90-140 GHz).

ABSTRACT

We report the experimental implementation of a wireless transmission system with a 146-GHz carrier frequency which is generated by optical heterodyning the two modes from a monolithically integrated quantum dash dual-DFB source. The monolithic structure of the device and the inherent low noise characteristics of quantum dash gain material allow us to demonstrate the transmission of a 1 Gbps ON-OFF keyed data signal with the two wavelengths in a free-running state at 146-GHz carrier wave frequency. The tuning range of the device fully covers the W-band (75 - 110 GHz) and the F-band (90 - 140 GHz).

ABSTRACT

This article presents an evaluative account of a pilot scheme that aimed to introduce evidence-based practice in one NHS trust. The scheme was based on collaboration between staff in the quality assurance department and a nurse researcher based in a university. This collaboration enabled three designated staff to develop skills required for evidence-based practice and guide the production of information that could be disseminated to nurses throughout the trust. Evaluation demonstrated that participants had examined eight practice-based topics and devised protocols that could be applied to practice in a range of hospital and community settings throughout the trust. Evaluation also highlighted the importance of ensuring that members of other disciplines are aware of, and feel involved in, new developments even if they are not directly concerned with them.
