ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are important immunologic, and neurotrophic factors for MS pathogenesis. The impact of exercise on these factors is yet to be fully elucidated in patients with MS. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study is to investigate the effect of 8-week combined exercise training on serum concentrations of SOCS1, SOCS3, and BDNF. The secondary aim is to determine the effects of combined exercise training on balance, functional exercise capacity, and fatigue in patients with MS. METHODS: Serum SOCS1, SOCS3, and BDNF levels were assessed in 36 MS patients and 18 healthy individuals. In addition, balance, functional exercise capacity, and fatigue were assessed in the patients with MS. The patients were randomly divided into the combined exercise group (MS-EX, n:18) and the control group (MS-C, n:18). MS-EX received an 8-week combined exercise training. RESULTS: The serum SOCS1, SOCS3, and BDNF levels were similar in the MS patients and healthy control (HC). In MS-EX, the serum BDNF level, balance, functional exercise capacity, and fatigue improved after 8weeks (p<0.05), but the serum SOCS1, and SOCS3 levels did not change significantly (p>0.05). In MS-C, the serum SOCS1 level, and fatigue increased significantly after 8weeks (p<0.05), but serum SOCS3, BDNF, balance and functional exercise capacity did not change (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the combined exercise training improved BDNF, and physical performance in patients with MS. But, future studies are needed to clarify the role of SOCS proteins in MS pathogenesis and the effect of exercise on SOCS.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of various human papillomavirus (HPV) types and its relationship with some risk factors among Turkish women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 673 patients were included in the study. Cervical samples were taken from the patients for routine Pap smear and HPV DNA tests. HPV DNA was studied in the cervical smear by using the PCR method. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 40 ± 10.9 years. Of all patients, 13.5% had a positive HPV DNA test. In addition, 5.1% of the patients were HPV type 16 positive, 1.5% were HPV type 18 positive, 0.6% were HPV type 31 positive, and 0.9% were HPV type 53 positive. CONCLUSION: Findings show that awareness should be raised among Turkish women regarding HPV infection and vaccination.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Some researchers have suggested that Epstein-Barr virus may play a role in the pathogenesis of laryngeal malignancies. In order to clarify the role of cytokines in this disease context, the current study aimed to determine the serum levels of cytokines in Epstein-Barr virus DNA positive patients with laryngeal carcinoma. SUBJECTS: The study included 10 patients with diagnosed laryngeal carcinoma and Epstein-Barr virus DNA positive tumour tissue samples. The control group comprised 10 Epstein-Barr virus DNA negative patients diagnosed with laryngeal carcinoma, 10 patients with acute Epstein-Barr virus infection and 10 healthy individuals. METHOD: Serum cytokine levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The Epstein-Barr virus DNA positive and negative laryngeal carcinoma patients showed no differences regarding serum levels of the following cytokines: interleukins 1beta, 2, 6 and 12, tumour necrosis factor alpha, and interferon gamma. However, serum levels of interleukin 10 and transforming growth factor beta1 were significantly higher in Epstein-Barr virus DNA positive laryngeal carcinoma patients compared with Epstein-Barr virus DNA negative laryngeal carcinoma patients (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the cytokines interleukin 10 and transforming growth factor beta1 may act as growth factors in Epstein-Barr virus related laryngeal carcinoma. These cytokines may thus represent potential targets for molecular therapeutic treatment for laryngeal carcinoma; they may also be useful as indicators of disease prognosis.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To identify the role of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), HHV-7, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) in the pathogenesis of pityriasis rosea (PR). MATERIAL: Polymerase chain reaction with specific primers for HHV-6 and HHV-7 DNA sequences was performed on the blood and tissue samples of 25 patients with PR and on the blood samples of age- and sex-matched healthy controls. HHV-6, EBV, CMV immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, HHV-7 IgM and IgG were analysed by indirect immunofluorescence on the serum samples of the study population. In the patient group, the values were studied 2 weeks later again (second control). RESULTS: There were no differences between the first and second controls of the patients and healthy subjects regarding HHV-6 IgM, HHV-7 IgM, CMV IgM, EBV IgM results. There were significant differences between the first [HHV-6 DNA (2 of 25), HHV-7 DNA (6 of 25)] and second control [HHV-6 DNA (1 of 25), HHV-7 DNA (11 of 25)] of the patients for the blood samples in favour of HHV-7. PR patients showed higher amounts of HHV-6 and HHV-7 DNA positivity when compared with that of healthy subjects. HHV-7 seemed to be more important regarding tissue samples [HHV-6 DNA (7 of 25), HHV-7 DNA (12 of 25) first control, HHV-6 DNA (6 of 25), HHV-7 DNA (12 of 25) second control] as well as blood samples. CONCLUSION: Though our results failed to support a causal relationship among EBV, CMV and PR, they indicated a possible role for HHV-6 and especially HHV-7 in a group of Turkish patients but other aetiological factors may exist.

ABSTRACT

Total mRNA of Candida strains( isolated form whole vaginal swabs) was investigated and the in vivo expression of C. albicans secreted aspartyl proteinase (SAP4), aglutinin-like sequence (ALS1) and hyphal wall protein (HWP1) genes was determined. A spectrum of gene expression profiles of strain isolated from vulvovaginal candidiasis(VVC) cases consisting of 10 pregnant, 4 postmenopausal, and 15 reproductive age (12 primary and 3 recurrent) 9 women with different estrogen level. Expression of SAP4, ALS1 and HWP1 genes was evaluated by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction using specific primer sets. The expression of ALS1, HWP1, and SAP4 was detected as 69, 62, and 38 %, respectively, in all cases. In pregnant, postmenopausal, and reproductive age women with VVC, the expression of ALS1 was observed as 70, 75, 67%, and HWP 60, 25, 73% respectively . Expression of SAP4 was found in pregnant, postmenopausal, and reproductive age women as 40, 50, and 33% respectively. Expression of teh adhesion genes in VVC does not correlate with estrogen level of patients.
