ABSTRACT

Clinical concentration of droperidol, seduxen, fentanyl were studied for their effects on in vitro immunity reaction with lymphocytes from donors and patients with lung carcinoma. In the donors, the agents caused no changes in E- and EAC-rosette formation. In the patients with lung carcinoma, droperidol elevated the number of theophylline-sensitive T lymphocytes, lowered theophylline-resistant ones and eventually normalized a theophylline-resistant to theophylline-sensitive T cell ratio. Fentanyl, 5 ng/ml was demonstrated to increase amounts of early T lymphocytes. Fentanyl concentrations (5 and 25 ng/ml) decreased B lymphocytes. It was concluded that droperidol produced a positive action and fentanyl showed heterogeneous effects on E- and EAC-rosette formation in patients with lung carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

The contact interaction between thymocytes and peritoneal macrophages during the cluster formation in vitro is substantially impaired 24 h following irradiation with lethal doses. A thymocyte is the most radiosensitive participant of the reaction.

ABSTRACT

The problems of radiation immunology in oncological practice are discussed using, by way of example, studies on the effect of radiation and combined therapy on the state of the immunity system in some cancer types. The authors present data on the development of secondary immunodeficiency states determined by disorder in lymphocyte level, cooperation, enzymatic properties and function in immune reactions. A possibility of correction of secondary immunodeficiency states after radiation and combined therapy with the help of immunomodulators was shown.

ABSTRACT

Function of islets of Langerhans of Wistar male rats was studied after irradiation of animals with different doses. The pancreas function was determined with regard to the incorporation of 65Zn into the gland tissues. Total-body irradiation (60Co) with the dose of 4.0 Gy somewhat increased the function of islets; at the dose of 8.0 Gy their function was transiently blocked, and at the dose of 15 Gy the function of islets of Langerhans was blocked completely.

ABSTRACT

Correlation analysis of the results of examination of 86 lung cancer patients treated by surgery and methods other than surgery established an inverse relationship between life-span and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level. An analysis using reagents supplied by CEA-IRE-Sorin Company showed that a CEA level in blood in excess of 10 micrograms/l is associated with the most unfavorable prognosis. The degree and rate of CEA excretion are in direct correlation with life-span and provide the most reliable criterion in evaluating the effectiveness of lung cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

Pharmacokinetics of 57Co-bleomycetin was studied on mice with lymphosarcoma LIO-1. It was found that at early periods of intravenous administration of the labeled antibiotic, i.e. within the period from 5 minutes to 1 hour its higher levels are detected in the liver, kidneys, blood serum, lungs, intestine and tumor. At later periods the drug levels in the organs and tissues gradually decrease and by the 72nd hour the concentration of 57Co-bleomycetin in the blood serum appears to be 30 times lower as that after 5 minutes. In the muscles and tumor its concentrations by that period are 15 and 2 times lower respectively. Radiometry of the animals showed that within the first 24 hours more than 85 per cent of 57Co-bleomycetin was excreted from the mice.

ABSTRACT

The antitumor activity and effect on immunogenesis of rubomycin and carminomycin combinations with levamisole were studied comparatively. It was found that levamisole administered after carminomycin increased the intensity of delayed hypersensitivity in mice and only partially reduced immunoreactivity of the animals estimated by the number of antibody-forming cells in the spleen. No such effect was observed after injections of rubomycin. The antitumor effect of the combinations of the antibiotics wit levamisole was studied in experimental transplantable mouse lymphosarcoma L10-1. The use of rubomycin or carminomycin in combination with levamisole increased the survival of the animals and sometimes resulted in complete resolution of the tumors. No such effect was observed in treatment of the animals with the drugs alone. The data are indicative of a possible use of levamisole in combination with antitumor antibiotics in immunochemotherapy of tumors.

ABSTRACT

The effect of 57Co-bleomycin on the immune response induced by sheep red cells was studied on mice. It was found that the immune response was not suppressed when the labeled antibiotic was used in a single dose of 5-20 mg/kg. By the 5th day the level of 57Co-bleomycin in the skin, thymus and blood was 3-10 times higher than that of 57CoCl2 and in the spleen it was 1.3-1.5 times higher.

ABSTRACT

The author discusses some mechanisms, conditioning the double role of carbon dioxide in the genesis of epileptical activity, first as a provocative factor, when carbon dioxide is a background against which the epileptical seizure appears and then as arresting the sequalae during the administration of CO2 during a seizure. It was demonstrated that the different action of CO2 was due to different phases in the changed functional state of the brain. The study was accomplished on 80 rabbits of the chenchille breed. The evalution of phases in changes of the functional state of the brain was performed with the aid of the encephalographic method.

ABSTRACT

Experiments were conducted on mice. Direct Jerne's test demonstrated a possibility of intensification of the primary immune response in the sexually mature mice under the effect of the splenic extracts. The significance of the extract dose and of the time of administration for the manifestation of the stimulating action was studied.

ABSTRACT

Pharmacokinetics of phosphamide-32P was studied in experiments on rats with sarcoma 45 and intact (tumourless) ones. Soon (15 min to 1 hour) after intraperitoneal injection of the compound the maximum amount of the isotope was definable in the liver, kidneys, spleen, suprarenals, in the tumour and the thymus. The content of the compound in the tumour ammounted to 0.2--0.4 per cent of the radioactivity introduced. Distribution of phosphemide-32P among organs and tissues of the rats with sarcoma 45 quatitatively differs from that in intact animals. During the first 24 hours 55--56 per cent of the radioactivity introduced is excreted together with urine.

ABSTRACT

A study was made of changes in the spectrum of brain electrical activity of rabbits, due to changes in the functional state of the brain, induced by means of a smooth rise in CO2 concentration in the air inhaled by the animals. Transformation of the general spectral characteristics has been revealed which consists in simultaneous re-distribution of frequency ranges and changes in the proportion of alpha-like, theta- and sigma-rhythms.
