ABSTRACT

Clinical rationale for alternating split-course radiotherapy for stage III Hodgkin's disease is discussed. The procedure was employed in 54 such patients. It proved useful in total nodal irradiation for advanced disease, resulting in improved survival. The technique involves a shorter duration of treatment than that of the standard one.

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with the results of experimental dosimetric studies on an anthropomorphic phantom using thermoluminescent dosimetry at the site of the joining of large fields of complex shape simulating total irradiation of the lymphatic collectors. The studies demonstrated the appropriateness of the joining at a distance of 1 cm between the fields. In such a variant adequate irradiation of the lymphatic system was achieved whereas an increase in a distance between the fields resulted in a risk of recurrence in under-irradiated areas without a significant decrease in radiation dose exposure to healthy organs and tissues.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of the results of radiotherapy of 100 patients with stage III Hodgkin's disease: 54 patients--after a split course and 46 using routine methods. A possibility of the clinical use of the split irradiation methods for therapy of patients with stage III Hodgkin's disease was shown. A stable tendency to improving therapeutic results assessed by the survival criteria was noted. The use of split irradiation reduced a period of radiotherapy as compared to routine methods.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the investigation was to study the effect of lithium carbonate on the time-course of changes in neutrophil leukocytes of the peripheral blood. Sixty-nine patients afflicted with Hodgkin's disease were entered into the study. Greater preservation of the content of neutrophil leukocytes was attained with the use of lithium carbonate coupled with radiation therapy. At the same time administration of lithium carbonate in the interval between the stages of anticancer treatment brought about an increase in the neutrophil count.

ABSTRACT

401 cases of hormone-producing tumors of the ovary were studied (190 theca-cell, 169--granulose cell, 25--mixed thecagranulosa cell and 17--virilising tumors). Histological diagnosis, clinical stage and end results of their treatment were compared. Theca-granulosa cell tumor is considered to be the most malignant form of these neoplasms. Pure theca-cell tumor proved to be benign in most cases. Of special interest is a high percentage of patients being cured at stage 1 (FIGO classification) of neoplastic process, that stands, in the authors' opinion, in close relationship with comparatively good results obtained in these patients.
