ABSTRACT

In general, calf production occurs in less intensive systems. The limitation of nutrients during the gestation phase of beef cows can have negative impacts on the consequent productivity of females. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of nutritional levels in the third trimester of pregnancy on the productive performance of beef cows kept in a natural pasture (NP). Eighty-three Charolais × Nelore cows were used, ranging in age from 4 to 12 years, which were divided according to their nutritional levels during the third trimester of pregnancy: NP, cows supplemented with 100% of their energy and protein requirements (SP100) and cows supplemented with 150% of their energy and protein requirements (SP150). The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments and a varied number of repetitions. The SP100 and SP150 cows presented better body condition at calving (2.92 and 2.99 vs 2.81 points) and at the start of the breeding season (2.90 and 2.95 vs 2.80 points) than did NP cows. The nutritional level of the cows in the third trimester of gestation did not influence the blood metabolite concentrations. The plasma levels of albumin and total proteins were 3.11 and 8.18 g/dl, respectively. Glucose and cholesterol showed values of 74.96 and 166.50 mg/dl. The lowest concentration of blood metabolites was observed in the first postpartum weeks. The SP100 and SP150 cows showed faster follicular growth and, consequently, a higher percentage of females with ovulatory follicles at 21 days postpartum than did NP cows (45.68, 41.11, and 11.00%, respectively). The SP150 cows had a higher pregnancy rate (40.74%), total calf production (295.88 kg/cow), and consequently, offspring sale value. An increased nutritional level in the third trimester of pregnancy improves the postpartum metabolic condition and productive efficiency of beef cows kept on NP.

ABSTRACT

Carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) has long been used as an ovarian cancer biomarker. However, because it is not specific for ovarian cells, CA125 could also be used to monitor congestion and inflammation in heart disease. Acute heart failure (HF) is used to identify patients with a worse prognosis in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We aimed to determine the association of CA125 with acute HF in STEMI and to compare CA125 with N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) with a cross-sectional study. At admission, patients were examined to define Killip class and then underwent coronary angioplasty. Blood samples, preferably taken in the hemodynamic ward, were centrifuged (1500 g for 15 min at ambient temperature) and stored at -80°C until biomarker assays were performed. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of congestion. Patients in Killip class ≥II were in the congestion group and those with Killip

ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of sorghum pasture implantation with different population arrangements in animal behavior and pasture structure and their relationships. The treatments were the combination of two row lines and two seeds per hectare densities, 22 or 44cm between rows and 12 or 24kg ha -1 of seed. 36 heifers at 15 months of age and 262kg body weight were used. The E44D24 and E22D12 treatments showed higher time of grazing (469.33 and 467.78 minutes, respectively). The animals in E44D24 treatment had lower bit rate (23.99 bites minute -1 ) compared to treatment with E22D24, a higher bit rate (32.45 bits min -1 ). The animals in E44D12 treatment presented the largest number of stations minute -1 (9.21) and higher displacement rate (11.76 steps min -1 ). The row spacing of 22cm increases the number of bits station -1 . The increase in seed density and the use of larger planting row spacing's increase the leaf density of the lower (0-30cm) and higher stratum (above 60cm) of pasture. The E44D12 and E22D24 treatment have higher amounts of stems in the upper stratum of the pasture.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the carcass and meat characteristics of Aberdeen Angus steers surgically castrated at two ages or immunocastrated with two protocols. Forty-eight calves we used, monitored from birth and weaned, with age and initial mean weight of six months and 160±16.54kg, respectively. The animals were randomly assigned to the following treatments: surgical castration at birth; surgical castration at weaning; immunocastration with three doses of the Bopriva ® vaccine and immunocastration with four doses of the Bopriva ® vaccine. The experimental design was completely randomized. Immunocastrated steers with three doses had a greater cooling break and lower fat thickness adjusted for 100kg of cold carcass than surgically castrated at birth (P< 0.05). Immunocastration with three doses provided an increase in muscle participation in relation to surgical castration but reduced fat in relation to surgical castration at birth (P< 0.05). The muscle:bone ratio was higher in the immunocastrated with three doses compared to surgically castrated at weaning (P< 0.05). Despite variations in tissue involvement in the carcass, the immunological castration proved to be viable to replace surgical castration, not changing the quality of the meat standards.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance, physiological and temperamental parameters of uncastrated beef cattle or those submitted to surgical castration or immunocastration, in the post-castration period. The experimental period was divided into two subperiods of observations: the first 15 days post-castration (healing period) and the 25 days following healing. In the first 15 days of evaluation, the non-castrated animals obtained a greater average daily gain of weight in relation to surgically castrated. The heart rate was higher for surgically castrated animals with 126,51 beats/minute, compared to the other treatments. The distance of escape was higher for the surgically castrated steers, with a value of 12,22 meters, when compared to the other groups studied. During the next 25 days of surgical castration, the mean daily gain of weight was higher in surgically castrated cattle than in non-castrated or immunocastrated cattle. The escape velocity, in the second evaluation subperiod, was superior in the castrated cattle, in relation to the not castrated. The immediate castration period, the first 15 days, altered the mean daily gain and the total weight gain, the physiological and temperamental parameters of surgically castrated cattle, however, after the healing period, these differences diminish or disappear.(AU)

Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of congestion. Patients in Killip class ≥II were in the congestion group and those with Killip <II in the absence of congestion group. We evaluated 231 patients. The mean age was 63.3 years. HF at admission was identified in 17.7% of patients. CA125 and NTproBNP levels were higher in patients with Killip class ≥II than those with Killip class <II (8.03 vs 9.17, P=0.016 and 772.45 vs 1925, P=0.007, respectively). The area under the receiver operator characteristic curve was 0.60 (95%CI 0.53−0.66, P=0.024) for CA125 and 0.63 (95%CI 0.56−0.69, P=0.001) for NTproBNP. There was no statistical difference between the curves (P=0.69). CA125 has similar use to NTproBNP in identifying acute HF in patients presenting with STEMI.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to evaluate the productive and reproductive performance of beef cows, as well as the performance of their calves according to the following dietary treatments: PRE: supplemented with protected fat (PF) during 45 days prepartum; PREPOS: supplemented with PF during 45 days prepartum and 63 days postpartum; POS: supplemented with PF during 63 days postpartum; PN: without supplementation. The productive performance of cows was not influenced by feed management (P>0.05), except for body condition score (BCS), which was lower for PRE and PREPOS cows at the end of mating season, with the latter cows having similar BCS POS and PN. The calving interval (CI) was shorter for cows supplemented in PREPOS - 376 days -, and did not differ in cows maintained in PN - 383 days. Supplemented PREPOS cows weaned 4.4 percent more pounds of calf per 100kg of cow at calving - 22.6kg - than the PRE and POS cows - 21.6kg and 21.6kg, respectively - and 8,4 percent more pounds of calf per 100 of cow at calving than the cows maintained in native pasture - 20.7kg. The fat protected supplementation during pre and/or postpartum periods did not affect the performance of cows and calves...

ABSTRACT

The carcass characteristics and empty body of Charolais steers n=9, cull heifers n= 10, and cull cows n=10, feedlot finished with similar subcutaneous fat thickness were evaluated. The slaughter weight and empty body weight (EBW) were similar between steers (480.2 and 417.4kg) and cows (516.2 and 405.8kg), which were higher than for heifers (368.3 and 306.1kg). Hot carcass dressing was significantly different among categories, being 57.2, 53.3 and 50.5%, respectively, for steers, heifers and cows. When carcass dressing was expressed in relation to EBW the differences became smaller among categories, being significant only between steers and heifers. The digestive tract content of cows was 34 and 45% higher than for steers and heifers, respectively, being correlated (P<0.05) with slaughter weight (r=0.66) and hot carcass dressing (r=-0.41). Hot carcass weight was similar for steers (274.9kg) and cows (260.8kg), both superior to heifers (196.4kg). Carcass length was higher for cows, intermediate for steers and lower for heifers. The Longissimus dorsi area was smaller for heifers. Steers showed better carcass conformation score than females, which did not differ between themselves.

ABSTRACT

The feedlot performance of steers fed forage sorghum and double purpose hybrids silage associated with concentrate levels was evaluated. A total of 60 steers, initial age 20 months and body weight of 322.45±5.58kg, were randomized in the treatments: three concentrate levels and two types of sorghum silage. The interaction of sorghum silage versus concentrate levels was observed for dry matter intake and average daily weight gain, which increased with the increase concentrate level in diets with forage sorghum silage, but was not altered in diets with double purpose silage. Steers fed forage sorghum silage presented a lower average intake of digestible energy (27.89Mcal/day-1) than those fed double purpose sorghum silage (31.42Mcal/day-1). The average feed conversion was not affected by the type of silage used. The increase of concentrate level in diets with lower forage quality increases the biological efficiency of feedlot beef cattle.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: The relationship between surgical timing and hip fracture mortality is unknown in the context of developing countries where large delays to surgery are common. We observed that delay from fracture to hospital admission is associated with decreased survival after a hip fracture. INTRODUCTION: To examine the relationship between the time interval from fracture to surgery as well as its subcomponents (time from fracture to hospital admission and time from admission to surgery) and hip fracture survival. METHODS: The medical records of all patients aged 60 years and older admitted to a public university hospital in the city of Rio de Janeiro with a primary diagnosis of hip fracture between 1995 and 2000 were reviewed. Survival to hospital discharge and at 1 year were examined. RESULTS: Among 343 patients included in the study, there were 18 (5.3%) in-hospital deaths, and 297 (86.6%) patients remained alive 1 year after surgery. Very long delays from the time of fracture to hospital admission (mean 3 days) and from hospital admission to surgery (mean 13 days) were identified. Increased time from fracture to hospital admission was associated with reduced survival to hospital discharge (hazard ratio [HR] 1.09, 95% CI 1.03-1.15, p = 0.005) and reduced survival at 1 year after surgery (HR 1.07, 95% CI 1.03-1.10, p < 0.001). The interval of time from hospital admission to surgery was not associated with reduced survival to hospital discharge (HR 1.03, 95% CI 0.96-1.10, p = 0.379) or at 1 year after surgery (HR 1.03, 95% CI 0.99-1.07, p= 0.185). CONCLUSIONS: If the association estimated in our study is causal, our results provide evidence that some hip fracture-related deaths could be prevented by improved patient access to appropriate and timely hospital care in the context of a developing country.

ABSTRACT

The characteristics of non-integrant parts of carcass of steers with two sexual conditions - castrated and non-castrated - with Charolais or Nellore genetic predominance were evaluated. The average age and inicial weight were 12 months old and 267kg, respectively. The steers were feedlot finished until slaughter weight of 400kg. The experimental diet was formulated in a roughage:concentrate ratio 50:50 (dry matter basis), with 10 percent crude protein. A completely randomized experimental design in a 2x2 factorial arrangement (two sexual conditions and two genetic groups) was used. Significant interaction between genotypes and sexual conditions of steers was observed for the omasum absolute weight. The non-castrated animals showed heavier kidneys (0.81 versus 0.66kg) and abomasums (1.20 versus 1.00kg) and intestines in comparisson to castrated animals. Genotypes with Charolais predominance showed heavier omasums (4.24 versus 3.46kg), intestines (8.18 versus 6.84kg), and the total digestive tract (16.88 versus 14.90kg) in relation to animals with Nellore predominance. ABSTRACT

The non-integrant components of carcass of Devon steers were evaluated. Animals were finished in feedlot (CONF), winter pasture (pasture of ryegrass - Lolium multiflorum Lam -PTEM), or tropical pasture (association of millet pasture - Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke - and Alexander Grass - Brachiaria plantaginea - PTRO). At the beginning of finishing, the average weight of steers was 320kg and age was 15 months. The roughage:concentrate ratio of CONF was 60:40. The animals were slaughtered at similar weights of 388.3, 386,7, and 375.8 for CONF, PTEM, and PTRO, respectively. The PTRO animals showed higher hot carcass dressing (HCD) percentage relative to 100kg of empty body weight (HCDEBW) in comparison to PTEM (64.6 versus 62.6 percent), and CONF animals showed intermediary value for HCDEBW (63.7 percent). The absolute weights of liver, 5.22, 4.43, and 3.87kg; total weights of all internal organs, 12.81, 11.37, and 10.83kg; rumen-reticulum, 7.62, 6.54, and 6.06kg; heart fat, 1.26, 0.65, and 0.30kg; and intestines, 9.97, 7.13, and 7.49kg, were higher (P<0.05) in PTEM animals than in CONF and PTRO animals, respectively. The same differences were observed concerning relative weights of the same organs. PTRO and CONF animals showed higher (P<0.05) gastrointestinal content than PTEM animals, 60.27, 55.32, and 41.21kg, respectively. Feedlot finished animals exhibited higher absolute weight of omasum, 5.17kg, than PTEM animals, 3.70kg, and PTRO animals presented intermediary value, 4,77kg. The same order was observed concerning relative weigh of the omasum, 1.61, 1.12, and 1.54 percent.

ABSTRACT

The physical compositionof carcass and meat quality of 22 Charolais (C) and Nellore (N) steers, feedlot finished and fed different levels of concentrate in the diet, were evaluated. The roughage fraction of the diet was made up by equal parts of corn and sorghum silages. The animals were distributed in three treatments constituted by 35, 50, or 65 percent of concentrate, in dry matter basis. Concentrate level did not affect carcass physical composition (P>0.05). Meat tenderness was positively affected (P=0.0013) by the concentrate level, increasing 0.026 points for each percent point increase of concentrate. The other meat qualitative characteristics were not affected by the concentrate level in the diet (P>0.05). Charolais steers showed meat with lighter color (4.44 x 2.89; P=0.0013), finer texture (4.15 x 3.14 points), better tenderness (6.85 x 5.71 points; P=0.0010), higher juiciness (7.17 x 5.77 points), lower Shear force (3.79 x 5.79kgf), and carcasses with higher muscle deposition (65.5 x 61.5 percent) in relation to N steers. Carcasses of Nellore steers showed higher fat percentage (23.3 x.20.3 percent).

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: This study aims to analyze whether the interval from hospital admission to surgery may be used as a surrogate of the actual gap from fracture to surgery when investigating in-hospital hip fracture mortality. After analyzing 3,754 hip fracture admissions, we concluded that those intervals might be used interchangeably without misinterpretation bias. INTRODUCTION: The debate regarding the influence of time to surgery in hip fracture (HF) mortality is one of the most controversial issues in the HF medical literature. Most previous investigations actually analyzed the time from hospital admission to surgery as a surrogate of the less easily available gap from fracture to surgery. Notwithstanding, the assumption of equivalency between those intervals remains untested. METHODS: We analyzed 3,754 hospital admissions of elderly patients due to HF in Quebec, Canada. We compared the performance as predictors of in-hospital mortality of the delay from admission to surgery and the actual gap from fracture to surgery using univariate and multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean times from fracture to surgery and from admission to surgery were 1.84 and 1.02 days (P < 0.001), respectively. On univariate logistic regression, both times were slightly significant as mortality predictors, yielding similar odds ratios of 1.08 (P < 0.001) for time from fracture to surgery and 1.11 (P < 0.001) for time from admission to surgery. After accounting for other covariates, neither times remained significant mortality predictors. CONCLUSION: The gap from admission to surgery may be used as a surrogate of the actual delay from fracture to surgery when studying in-hospital HF mortality.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To investigate the consequences of improvement in the workplace environment over six decades (1940-96) in asbestos miners and millers from a developing country (Brazil). METHODS: A total of 3634 Brazilian workers with at least one year of exposure completed a respiratory symptoms questionnaire, chest radiography, and a spirometric evaluation. The study population was separated into three groups whose working conditions improved over time: group I (1940-66, n = 180), group II (1967-76, n = 1317), and group III (1977-96, n = 2137). RESULTS: Respiratory symptoms were significantly related to spirometric abnormalities, smoking, and latency time. Breathlessness, in particular, was also associated with age, pleural abnormality and increased cumulative exposure to asbestos fibres. The odds ratios (OR) for parenchymal and/or non-malignant pleural disease were significantly lower in groups II and III compared to group I subjects (0.29 (0.12-0.69) and 0.19 (0.08-0.45), respectively), independent of age and smoking status. Similar results were found when groups were compared at equivalent latency times (groups I v II: 30-45 years; groups II v III: 20-25 years). Ageing, dyspnoea, past and current smoking, and radiographic abnormalities were associated with ventilatory impairment. Lower spirometric values were found in groups I and II compared to group III: lung function values were also lower in higher quartiles of latency and of cumulative exposure in these subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Progressive improvement in occupational hygiene in a developing country is likely to reduce the risk of non-malignant consequences of dust inhalation in asbestos miners and millers.

ABSTRACT

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is caused by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice spontaneously develop diabetes similar to the human disease. Cytokines produced by islet-infiltrating mononuclear cells may be directly cytotoxic and can be involved in islet destruction coordinated by CD4+ and CD8+ cells. We utilized a semiquantitative RT-PCR assay to analyze in vitro the mRNA expression of TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma cytokine genes in isolated islets (N = 100) and spleen cells (5 x 10(5) cells) from female NOD mice during the development of diabetes and from female CBA-j mice as a related control strain that does not develop diabetes. Cytokine mRNAs were measured at 2, 4, 8, 14 and 28 weeks of age from the onset of insulitis to the development of overt diabetes. An increase in IFN-gamma expression in islets was observed for females aged 28 weeks (149 +/- 29 arbitrary units (AU), P<0.05, Student t-test) with advanced destructive insulitis when compared with CBA-j mice, while TNF-alpha was expressed in both NOD and CBA-j female islets at the same level at all ages studied. In contrast, TNF-alpha in spleen was expressed at higher levels in NOD females at 14 weeks (99 +/- 8 AU, P<0.05) and 28 weeks (144 +/- 17 AU, P<0.05) of age when compared to CBA-j mice. The data suggest that IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha expression in pancreatic islets of female NOD mice is associated with beta cell destruction and overt diabetes.

ABSTRACT

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is caused by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic ß cells. Non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice spontaneously develop diabetes similar to the human disease. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate whether routine medical testing before cataract surgery reduces the rate of complications during the perioperative period in adults. METHODS: The study was carried out in an academic medical center in Brazil, between 10 February 2000 and 10 January 2001. The scheduled cataract operations were randomly assigned to one of two groups: 1) to be preceded by routine testing (the "routine-testing group") or 2) not to be preceded by routine medical testing (the "selective-testing group"). If the patient was assigned to the selective-testing group, it was requested that no preoperative testing be performed unless the patient presented with a new or worsening medical problem that would warrant medical evaluation with testing. In the case of patients assigned to the routine-testing group, three tests were requested: a 12-lead electrocardiogram, a complete blood count, and measurements of serum glucose. RESULTS: The sample of 1,025 patients scheduled to undergo cataract surgery was comprised of 512 assigned to the routine-testing group and of 513 assigned to the selective-testing group. The two groups had similar proportions of operations canceled and not subsequently rescheduled, 2% in each group. The cumulative rate of medical events was similar in the two groups, 9.6% in the routine-testing group and 9.7% in the selective-testing group (P = 0.923). The types of medical events were also similar in both groups. DISCUSSION: The results of this study suggest that routine medical testing before cataract surgery does not reduce the rate of complications during the perioperative period. The results also suggest it would be more efficient not to request routine preoperative tests unless indicated by patient history or physical examination.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Recurrent patients due to treatment dropout or disease relapse have been congesting health centers and impeding treatment routines and services. The purpose is to study aspects of previous treatment and irregularities concerning the patient, medication and service organization and to evaluate the outcome of retreatment. METHODS: A descriptive study of patient's personal characteristics, previous treatment and retreatment was carried out at Campinas, São Paulo State, in 1993 and 1994. Statistics analyses were performed using 95% confidence interval with Yates correction, exact Fisher test and Mantel Haenszel qui-square for stratification. RESULTS: Retreatment sequence corroborated with the default rates (63%) that were lower, but still high among relapsed cases (28.4%). Only 34.1% of relapsed cases did not present irregularities at previous treatment. CONCLUSIONS: High proportions of retreatment and inadequate previous treatment are favouring drug resistance. Efforts should be taken to improving tuberculosis services efficiency because many irregularities are due to "failures" in health services routine.
