ABSTRACT

Most of the tropical areas have sanitation problems to contend with. The French system of vertical-flow treatment wetlands (FS-VFTW) fed with raw wastewater could be a good water and sludge management solution. The purpose-adapted tropical design can reduce area requirement to below 1 m2/population equivalents (p.e.). The Taupinière FS-VFTW on Martinique Island was built according to this design, with one stage but with a saturated layer at the bottom of the filter and a simplified trickling filter (TF) added for further treatment to meet the high performances targeted. Unsaturated/saturated vertical-flow filters (US/S FS-VFTW) have shown improved performances on total nitrogen, carbon and suspended solids removal in temperate climates, but the performances in tropical conditions remain unknown. Here, we report on real-world-operation in the French Overseas Territories (FOT), the reliability and performances of this VFCW tropical-design. The system experienced loading conditions ranging from 30% to 165% of nominal carbonaceous biological oxygen demand (BOD5), as well as tropical rainstorms that brought over 7 times the nominal hydraulic load. Over a period of 3 years, 29 campaigns collected 24-h flow-proportional samples at each treatment stage (raw wastewater, FS-VFTW outlet, TF outlet). When applied loads were close to nominal values, the US/S FS-VFTW itself guarantees 85/90/60/50% removal and 125/25/40/50 mg/L at the outlet for chemical oxygen demand (COD)/total suspended solids (TSS)/total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN)/total nitrogen (TN), respectively. By comparison with US/S systems in mainland France, it appears that the warmer tropical-climate temperatures facilitate both nitrification and denitrification kinetics. Performances in overload conditions confirm that the US/S FS-VFTW remains robust and reliable although COD and TKN removal are impacted, especially after strong tropical rain events. By adding a simple compact trickling filter to a US/S FS-VFTW, the treatment system delivers high-level performances (>95% removal for BOD5, COD, TSS and TKN) at less than 1 m2/p.e.

ABSTRACT

Plants are essential in the functioning of constructed wetlands. When setting up systems in tropical areas, Phragmites australis is not always a good choice because of its invasiveness. In vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) fed with raw wastewater, the main role of plants is their mechanical action, which helps prevent clogging of the deposited organic matter. Various species have already been used in some tropical climate studies, but generally not for such systems, and no attempt has been made to screen large numbers of alternative species. Here we describe a method to select species among a hundred studied, along with promising plants tested in batches, and at full scale. Species of the order Zingiberales showed good adaptation to the main stresses generated by VFCWs. They have long vegetative cycles, which may require weed growth control after plantation, but low harvesting frequency. Root systems with long rhizomes such as Heliconia psittacorum should take priority to ensure even growth and avoid clumps. To limit the phytosanitary risk with Musaceæ (banana tree), Canna indica or Canna glauca are preferable. Species of the genus Cyperus also demonstrate good adaptation, and could be of interest, especially when a high stem density is required (e.g. planted sludge drying beds).

Abstract Catches and exports of skate Rioraja agassizii place this species as “vulnerable to extinction” on the IUCN Red List; therefore, biological and ecological knowledge becomes an important instrument for its conservation control. This study described and quantified the diet composition of R. agassizii by means of stomach analysis contents in the periods 2005-2006 and 2012-2013. We analyzed and quantified stomach contents in terms of abundance (%N), weight (%M), frequency of occurrence (% FO), and index of relative importance (IRI). The results showed differences in the food rates between the periods. However, the groups of food items were the same: Teleostei fish, decapods, and mollusks. In 2005-2006, the diet consisted mainly of shrimp, however, in 2012-2013 it consisted of fish, followed by decapods, especially shrimps. The differences in diets may be attributed to shrimp abundance, which do not characterize a change in the eating habits in 2012-2013, because, in addition to fish, shrimps were also important food sources. The presence of a certain prey is more related to its availability rather than the feeding preference of skate. The amount of ingested items is associated to biological and environmental factors, so that further studies relating diet with capture area, seasonality, depth, and other factors should be conducted.


Resumo A raia-santa, Rioraja agassizii é uma espécie endêmica da qual pouco se conhece sobre sua biologia e ecologia, o que a leva a ser classificada como “vulnerável a extinção”. O objetivo foi identificar e quantificar a composição da dieta alimentar da R. agassizii através da análise do conteúdo estomacal de exemplares capturados nos períodos de 2005-2006 e 2012-2013. Foram analisados os conteúdos alimentares e quantificados em abundância (N%), peso (M%), frequência de ocorrência (FO%) e índice de importância relativa (IRI) de cada item. Os resultados mostraram que em 2012-13 a dieta foi composta por peixes, seguido de decápodes, especialmente camarões, entretanto em 2005-06 foi composta basicamente por camarões. A diferença nas dietas não quer dizer que os hábitos alimentares mudaram, pois em 2012-13 além dos peixes, os camarões também foram classificados como maior importância alimentar. Considerando que a quantidade e variedade dos itens ingeridos está relacionada, principalmente, a fatores ambientais são necessários mais estudos que relacionem áreas de captura, sazonalidade e profundidade.

ABSTRACT

We study theoretically the quantum optical properties of hybrid molecules composed of an individual quantum dot and a metallic nanoparticle. We calculate the resonance fluorescence of this composite system. Its incoherent part, arising from nonlinear quantum processes, is enhanced by more than 2 orders of magnitude as compared to that of the dot alone. The coupling between the two systems gives rise to a Fano interference effect which strongly influences the quantum statistical properties of the scattered photons: a small frequency shift of the incident light field may cause changes in the intensity correlation function of the scattered field of orders of magnitude. The system opens a good perspective for applications in active metamaterials and ultracompact single-photon devices.

ABSTRACT

The local optical density of states plays a key role in a wide range of phenomena. Near to structures displaying optical absorption or gain, the definition of the photonic local density of states needs to be revised. In this case two operative different definitions can be adopted to characterize photonic structures. The first (ρ(A)(r, ω)) describes the light intensity at a point r when the material system is illuminated isotropically and corresponds to what can be measured by a near-field microscope. The second (ρ(B)(r, ω)) gives a measure of vacuum fluctuations and coincides with ρ(A)(r, ω) in systems with real susceptibility. Scattering calculations in the presence of dielectric and metallic nanostructures show that these two definitions can give rather different results, the difference being proportional to the thermal emission power of the photonic structure. We present a detailed derivation of this result and numerical calculations for nanostructures displaying optical gain. In the presence of amplifying media, ρ(B)(r, ω) displays regions with negative photon densities, thus failing in describing a power signal. In contrast, ρ(A)(r, ω), positive definite, properly describes the near-field optical properties of these structures.

Se presenta paciente de 55 años, sexo femenino politransfundida con falta de respuesta al tratamiento instituído, identificándose un Anti E con técnicas enzimáticas, que no fue detectado en Liss-Coombs. Está bien demostrado desde la literatura internacional que un 35 por ciento de anticuerpos reaccionan sólo con este método y que el 0,5 por ciento del total de los resultados son falsos positivos, se destaca la importancia de trabajar con esta metodología evaluando riesgos-beneficios.


We describe the case of a 55 years old woman that has the history of politransfusion but she hasn't res­ponded to this treatment and it was identified in her serum sample an anti-E antibody that was active only by the enzyme test with gel method. As Literature des­cribe that 35 per cent of alloantibodies only react with this method and 0,5 per cent has false positive result, it is relevant the fact of working with this method testing risk and benefits.
