ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To identify the psychological inflexibility (PI) processes (experiential avoidance, cognitive fusion, poor contact with the present moment, unclear personal values and lack of commitment to action) associated with body mass index (BMI), depression, anxiety and stress symptoms and binge eating in overweight and obese people by drawing on the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) framework. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 243 people with a BMI of at least 25 and aged from 18 to 60 years old. The following instruments were used: Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II (AAQ-II), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-Weight (AAQ-W), Valued Living Questionnaire (VLQ), Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (CFQ-7), Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire-Body Image (CFQ-BI), Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ), Binge Eating Scale (BES) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and t tests. RESULTS: There were no differences between BMI categories with respect to PI variables, but PI was positively related to the severity of binge eating and to symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. CONCLUSION: The development of interventions focused on psychological inflexibility can be useful for the treatment of symptoms associated with overweight and obesity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level V, cross-sectional descriptive study.

ABSTRACT

The abandonment rate of these interventions continues very high. This study aims to evaluate which factors can predict the participation of overweight and obese people in an intensive psychosocial program of 8 hours in one day, that compares an intervention based on Commitment and Acceptance Therapy with a psychoeducational intervention. Method: This is a cross-sectional quantitative study in which 82 people (77 of them, women), with BMI 25 and higher and ages between 18 and 60 years, answered to a recruiting and confirmed participation. The instruments used were: DES, AAQ-II, AAQ-W, VLQ, CFQ-7, CFQ-BI, MEQ, BES, DASS - 21, sociodemographic questionnaire, weight and BMI. For the data analysis, it was conducted a multivariate binary logistic regression. Results: the variables with some degree of prediction in the adhesion to the intervention were the ones of behavior related to diet and physical activity, psychological flexibility and, more specifically, the psychological process of cognitive fusion.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence and incidence of overweight and/or obesity in the population is high. The behavior change regarding food is still difficult, even in cases in which surgical techniques were used, during the most critical stage of obesity. The Motivational interviewing (MI) technique, first used to treat drug addiction, emerges as a possibility to encourage lasting behavioral change in individuals with overweight and obesity. This article aims to review the results of studies published between 2008 and 2010 which applied MI in overweight or obesity treatment. The descriptors motivational interviewing and obesity were searched in the following databases: Academic Research Library, Academic Search Premier, CBCA Complete (ProQuest), CINAHL (EBSCO), Dissertations & Theses, Electronic Journals, Latin American Newsstand, Medical Library, ProQuest, Pubmed/Medline, Scielo e Web of Science. Results in child, adolescent and adult treatment as well as researches with preliminary results are presented.(AU)
