ABSTRACT

Wood dust can cause occupational-related naso-sinusal cancer, characterized by a latency period of about 40 years. The Tuscany Cancer Registry estimates that cases of NPSC are from 20-25 per year into the Region (33% related to wood dust). These neoplasms are surgically treatable at early-stage and, for this reason, a rapid endoscopic diagnosis is considered to be reasonably useful for prognostic issues. We used a questionnaire to investigate nasal symptoms and NOSQ and SOLAR questionnaires to highlight respiratory/skins diseases, and a spirometry for each worker. Subjects with a working-age of more than 15 years, and those that were positive to the questionnaire and/or to the medical history were were referred to a specialist in otolaryngology. The prevalence of endoscopic positive findings--detected especially in subjects with a working age of more than 15 years--confirms the significance of the problem.

ABSTRACT

The manufactured in "cotto" is typical of Chianti Fiorentino with about 400 employees. In 2005. the UF PISLL encountered an exposure to silica more than TLV, particularly for some tasks; were prescribed interventions of prevention and was undertaken an investigation of the occupational health status with occupational health physician. We observed 227 workers, 208 males and 19 females, with average age of 43 years and average age working of 15 years. The habit of smoking tobacco was higher than for the general population. The assessment of exposure to silica has been detected for 59 workers (mean 0.05 mg / mc); at pulmonary function testing resulted: 10 with airway obstruction and 4 airflow limitation; by 140 chest X - ray acquired 1 was interstitial pulmonary disease and 1 was bronchopneumonia. Among the diseases not related to exposure to silica, emerging 42 cases of low back pain, 28 hearing loss, 7 with hypertension. Non uniformity in health surveillance and diagnostic criteria highlights the need to cooperate between occupational doctor in public prevention and control service and qualified occupational doctor to ensure a standard of quality in the prevention of disease in exposed to silica.

ABSTRACT

In order to experience a method for the choice in Public Health, a list of the problems in occupational health in Florence has been characterized one, using for the definition of the priorities a "Minnesota Department of Health's Community Health Services Planning Manual--Guidelines for Local Public Health Agencies: CHS Plan Cycle 2002-2003". The following priorities problems of health are emerged in order of: exposure to chemistries in agricultural workers, fatal and serious injures among construction and agricultural workers, musculoskeletal disorders by biomechanical overload of the upper limbs, hearing loss. For everyone of they, has been indicated a possible strategy.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to further clarify the cancer risk associated with asbestos exposure in railway carriage construction and repair. The cohort included 734 subjects employed between 1 January 1945 and 31 December 1969. Vital status was ascertained at 31 December 1997. Mortality was investigated in the time span 1970-97. Forty-two subjects (6%) were lost to follow-up and eight causes of death (4%) could not be ascertained. The overall mortality was not above the expected value. Among neoplastic diseases, excesses were observed for lung standardized mortality ratio (SMR) = 124; 90% confidence interval (CI) = 87-172; 26 obs), pleura (SMR = 1,327; CI = 523-2,790; 5 obs), larynx (SMR = 240; CI = 95-505; 5 obs), liver (SMR = 241; CI = 126-420; 9 obs), pancreas (SMR = 224; CI = 98-443; 6 obs) and multiple myeloma (SMR = 429; CI = 117-1,109; 3 obs). The observed excess of lung and pleural neoplasms can be causally related to asbestos exposure in the manufacture of railway carriages. A causal role of asbestos exposure in the raised SMRs from laryngeal and pancreatic neoplasms and multiple myeloma cannot be conclusively proven.

ABSTRACT

In a multicenter study on the occupational etiology of sinonasal cancer (s.n.c.) carried out in Italy, we collected information about three cases which had arisen among glass workers: an adenocarcinoma, a melanoma, and a squamocellular carcinoma. The three men worked many years as mixers and/or batchers in artistic glass factories in Tuscany (Italy). We propose a possible etiological role of arsenic dust.

ABSTRACT

We reviewed the certificates of 39,650 deaths which occurred in the period 1975-1988 in Leghorn and of 45,900 in La Spezia (Italy) in the period 1958-1988. In total 262 cases have been recorded as pleural mesothelioma. The main occupational exposures occurred in the shipbuilding industry. Regarding non-occupational exposures to asbestos, 13 cases of mesothelioma were found in women who had washed the work clothes of their relatives at home; we also found other domestic uses of asbestos which were rarely or never discussed previously in the literature: six cases might be explained by the installation of fireproof or non-conductive materials in the domestic environment. These exposures probably are more frequent than realized until now.
