ABSTRACT

A nasal mass in a Domestic Shorthair cat was causing facial deformity, sneezing and intermittent epistaxis. Biopsy samples obtained previously had been non-diagnostic. Computed tomography images revealed an irregular, contrast-enhancing mass occupying a large portion of the righthand side of the nasal cavity. Previously described criteria for malignancy were not present. A ventral surgical approach combined with temporary, ipsilateral, common carotid arterial occlusion provided excellent access for debulking the lesion and collecting samples for histopathology. A nasal vascular hamartoma was diagnosed and clinical signs resolved postoperatively. This is the first documentation of this abnormality in the cat. Hamartomatous abnormalities should be included on the list of differential diagnoses for feline nasal mass lesions. The prognosis for hamartomatous lesions postoperatively is good, in keeping with their limited propensity for growth after maturity.

ABSTRACT

The class II region of the major histocompatibility complex was evaluated in 25 greyhounds by sequence-based typing and the genomic matching technique (GMT). Two new DLA-DRB1 alleles were identified. Twenty-four dogs carried the DLA-DRB1*01201/DQA1*00401/DQB1*01303/DQB1*01701 haplotype, which carries two DQB1 alleles. One haplotype was identified from which DQB1 and DQA1 appeared to be deleted. The GMT enabled detection of DQB1 copy number, discrimination of the different class II haplotypes and the identification of new, possibly biologically relevant polymorphisms.

ABSTRACT

An 8-year-old, male neutered Irish Setter was presented with a 2-week history of pain upon opening the mouth and chronic otitis externa. Computed tomography examination revealed destruction of the left tympanic bulla with a soft-tissue density within the remains of the tympanic cavity. Cytology of aspirates collected from tissue adjacent to the tympanic bulla revealed suppurative inflammation and bacteria. A ventral bulla osteotomy was performed. Histopathology of granulation tissue within the remains of the tympanic cavity was diagnostic of cholesterol granuloma.

ABSTRACT

A 9-year-old male neutered Labrador Retriever presented with signs consistent with multifocal neurological disease. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed a mononuclear pleocytosis and electromyography revealed abnormal electrical activity in distal appendicular and masticatory muscles. Treatment was declined and necropsy revealed disseminated granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis with extensive involvement of the peripheral nervous system.
