ABSTRACT

The use of alternative proteins is becoming more common in pet feed, and insect-based dog foods (IBDFs) are becoming more widely available. However, little research has been conducted to date in respect of the drivers for consumers' acceptance of IBDF. This study aimed to investigate the acceptance of IBDF among adult UK dog owners and the factors influencing the decision to try and buy such products. A theoretical model was developed following a review of the existing literature. An online survey of 280 participants was carried out and the results were analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM) to test the theoretical model. The following constructs all had a significant impact on attitudes towards IBDF and/or intentions to try and buy IBDF: food preferences for animal welfare, health and environment; attitudes towards uses of animals; beliefs about insect sentience; disgust; perceptions of benefits and risks; and social norms. Social norms had the strongest influence of any single construct. Consumer acceptance of IBDF is multi-faceted including social, cultural and ethical components, and it is likely that the better availability of information and opportunities for consumers to familiarise themselves with IBDF would help to drive consumer acceptance. In order to allow dog owners to make informed decisions in line with their ethical preferences, further research is needed to establish the overall health and welfare implications of IBDF on the animals involved in production, as well as the companion animals, who are the ultimate consumers.

ABSTRACT

Regular breakfast consumption has the potential to prevent the prevalence of NCDs and to improve the nutritional profile of diets. Given consumers' interest in improving their diets, food suppliers are interested in introducing new cereal products making different health claims to capture consumers' attention. The purpose of this study is threefold: first, it aims to understand whether UK food suppliers are working to increase the availability of breakfast cereals with healthy and nutritious attributes; second, it explores which companies are leading the launch of these products; and third, it assesses to what extent health and nutrition claims made by breakfast cereals have an impact on their market success. The study employs an assembled database combining data from Mintel Global New Products Database (GNPD) and Kantar Worldpanel Dataset (KWDS) for the UK. A hazard-based duration model was used to analyse the success of the new products launched in the UK market in 2011 following them up to 2015. Our results reveal that UK suppliers broadened the number of breakfast cereals on offer in the period 2000 to 2018, with a particular focus on multigrain cereals, porridge and granola. Health and nutrition claims were added to 27% of these products. Although consumers welcome healthy alternatives such as muesli, the impact of positional claims on the success of newly developed breakfast cereals is claim-specific. No clear pattern regarding the impact of health and nutrition claims is identified. However, other elements such as celiac-friendly ingredients and UK origin do have a positive impact on the success of breakfast cereals.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Emergency Nursing Hand off ensures the transmission of critical information and continuity of care and treatment of patients. Incidents or deficiencies in Hand off can cause problems in patient safety so it is necessary to investigate and develop strategies to reduce them. Objective: To identify the content and deficiencies in the Emergency Nursing Hand off. Methods: Prospective descriptive study in Emergency Service, Hospital Clínic of Barcelona during 2nd quarter 2016 over 95265 annual transfers of nursing made. Calculated convenience sample n = 384. Emergency Nursing Teams Hand off were reviewed by 24-item model created by researchers evidence based. Results: About 24 items reference Hand off model, were transmitted average 7.61 (95 percent CI 7.41 7.81), 31.7 percent of the total. The items were not reported average 16.38 (95 percent 16.18 16.58), 68.3 percent. Significant differences (p <0.001) were obtained according to the Emergency Department assessed (differentiated profile of patients and care). Items not reported mean = 16.24 (95 percent CI 15.97 16.52) in Observation Medicine; mean = 16.85 (95 percent CI 16.37 17.34) in Level 3 Emergency Room; mean = 16.74 (95 percent CI 16.16 17.32) in Observation Surgery / Trauma; mean = 15.72 (95 percent CI 15,20 16,25) in Level 2 Emergency Room; mean = 17.23 (95 percent CI 17.69 to 16.77) in Traumatology Emergency Room. Conclusions: Emergency Nursing Hand Off showed deficiencies in its content, with differences by healthcare area. Hand off standardization in Emergency Nursing Teams could improve their quality, efficiency and get greater impact on patient safety(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common disease where known genetic risk factors explain only a small portion of the genetic variance. Then, the analysis of intermediate phenotypes, such as thrombin generation assay, can be used to identify novel genetic risk factors that contribute to VTE. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the genetic basis of distinct quantitative phenotypes of thrombin generation and its relationship to the risk of VTE. PATIENTS/METHODS: Lag time, thrombin peak and endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) were measured in the families of the Genetic Analysis of Idiopathic Thrombophilia 2 (GAIT-2) Project. This sample consisted of 935 individuals in 35 extended families selected through a proband with idiopathic thrombophilia. We performed also genome wide association studies (GWAS) with thrombin generation phenotypes. RESULTS: The results showed that 67% of the variation in the risk of VTE is attributable to genetic factors. The heritabilities of lag time, thrombin peak and ETP were 49%, 54% and 52%, respectively. More importantly, we demonstrated also the existence of positive genetic correlations between thrombin peak or ETP and the risk of VTE. Moreover, the major genetic determinant of thrombin generation was the F2 gene. However, other suggestive signals were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The thrombin generation phenotypes are strongly genetically determined. The thrombin peak and ETP are significantly genetically correlated with the risk of VTE. In addition, F2 was identified as a major determinant of thrombin generation. We reported suggestive signals that might increase our knowledge to explain the variability of this important phenotype. Validation and functional studies are required to confirm GWAS results.

ABSTRACT

The impact of hedonic evaluation on consumers' preferences for beef attributes was evaluated (origin, animal diet, fat content, color, price) including its enrichment with omega-3 (n-3) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) fatty acids. One group of consumers (n=325) received information about n-3 and CLA, while the other group (n=322) received no information. Consumers conducted a Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE), using the recently developed Generalized Multinomial Logit model; followed by a blind hedonic evaluation of beef samples, which were identified after tasting, and finally repeated the DCE. Results showed that hedonic evaluation had a significant impact on consumers' preferences, which were similar after tasting for all consumers, with less emphasis on the fat content, color, and origin attributes and greater emphasis on animal diet. Preference for n-3 enriched beef increased, while preference for CLA enriched beef was still not significant after tasting. The information provided had a significant effect on consumers' beef preferences, but no significant impact on beef liking scores.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. We present the case of a female newborn who suffered multiple burns due to silver nitrate in areas distant to the initial application site. Clinical observation. The burns developed in the perineum after the routine treatment of an umbilical granuloma with topical silver nitrate without any direct contact with the genital area of the infant. Comments. The burns were probably due to volatile particles of silver nitrate powder that are present in the vials of silver nitrate sticks. Preventive measures are proposed (AU)
