ABSTRACT
Papillary endothelial hyperplasia or Masson tumor most commonly occurs within the extremities and head and neck. It is usually of intravascular type, associated with thrombus formation and organization within a preexisting vessel or vascular malformation, but rarely can be extravascular. We describe the first 2 cases of this extravascular type to occur within the ovary, one of which mimicked malignancy radiologically. This condition is thought to represent a reactive phenomenon with reparative response secondary to thrombosis although with an unclear underlying pathogenesis. The prognosis is generally good, with complete surgical resection usually representing adequate treatment.

EWSR1-SMAD3-positive fibroblastic tumor is a recently characterized neoplasm with distinct clinicopathologic features and recurrent EWSR1-SMAD3 gene fusion. ESFT typically presents as a small, painless tumor in extremity subcutaneous tissues. Their behavior is benign, although they are prone to local recurrence. They typically comprise two components: intersecting fascicles of overlapping, uniform plump spindle cells, and less cellular hyalinized areas containing stippled calcifications. Immunohistochemically, the cells consistently show diffuse ERG nuclear expression, while other markers are negative. The morphology of this neoplasm can lead to histologic confusion with both benign and malignant soft tissue tumors, including monophasic synovial sarcoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and spindle cell sarcoma, not otherwise specified. Correct identification of ESFT is critical, most importantly to avoid unnecessary overtreatment as sarcoma.

Superficial CD34-positive fibroblastic tumor (SCPFT) is a recently described entity that, despite significant pleomorphism, carries a good prognosis. We briefly describe this tumor and its principal differential diagnoses. Recognition of SCPFTs, including the clinical context in which they arise, is important to avoid confusion with other pleomorphic soft tissue tumors, particularly neoplasms in the group of pleomorphic sarcomas, which are typically aggressive tumors that could lead to unnecessary overtreatment.

Chronic schistosomiasis and its intestinal manifestations can lead to anaemia. However, schistosomiasis resulting in anaemia is rare in the UK. This report aims to raise awareness of schistosomiasis in immigrants to the UK and prevent missed diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Despite the growing use of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) PET texture analysis to measure intratumoural heterogeneity in cancer research, the biologic basis of F-FDG PET-derived texture variables is poorly understood. We aimed to assess correlations between F-FDG PET-derived texture variables and whole-slide image (WSI)-derived metrics of tumour cellularity and spatial heterogeneity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients with non-small-cell lung cancer prospectively underwent F-FDG PET imaging before tumour resection. We tested nine F-FDG PET parameters: metabolically active tumour volume, total lesion glycolysis, mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean), first-order entropy, energy, skewness, kurtosis, grey-level co-occurrence matrix entropy and lacunarity (SUV-lacunarity). From the haematoxylin and eosin-stained WSIs, we derived mean tumour-cell density (MCD) and lacunarity (path-lacunarity). Spearman's correlation analysis and agglomerative hierarchical clustering were performed to assess variable associations. RESULTS: Tumour volumes ranged from 2.2 to 74 cm (median: 17.9 cm). MCD correlated positively with total lesion glycolysis (rs: 0.46, P: 0.007) and SUVmean (rs : 0.55; P: 0.008) and negatively with skewness and kurtosis (rs: -0.47 for both; P: 0.028 and 0.026, respectively). SUV-lacunarity and path-lacunarity were positively correlated (rs: 0.5; P: 0.018). On cluster analysis, larger tumours trended towards higher SUVmean and entropy with a predominance of tightly concentrated high SUV-voxels (negative skewness and low kurtosis on the histogram); on WSI analysis such larger tumours also displayed generally higher MCD and low SUV-lacunarity and path-lacunarity. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that histopathological MCD and lacunarity are associated with several commonly used F-FDG PET-derived indices including SUV-lacunarity, metabolically active tumour volume, SUVmean, entropy, skewness, and kurtosis, and thus may explain the biological basis of F-FDG PET-uptake heterogeneity in non-small-cell lung cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Testicular cancer is the most common type of cancer in young Caucasian men. It has been suggested that testicular microlithiasis (TML) is a premalignant condition. This study's objective was to investigate TML histology prevalence in testicular cancer patients in two European populations. METHODS: We analysed archived histopathology orchiectomy specimens from 152 patients diagnosed with testicular cancer at Fredericia Hospital in Denmark from 2004 to 2014, and 106 patients diagnosed at St Thomas' Hospital in London from 2011 to 2015. RESULTS: The Danish patients' median age was 37 years (range: 16-74 years) and the English patients' 36 years (range: 18-78 years). In the Danish patients, 29 (19.1%) had TML, and in the English patients, 43 (40.6%) had TML (p < 0.001). Haematoxylin bodies were slightly more common in the English patients. Laminated calcification was more often seen in seminomas than in non-seminomas.â© CONCLUSIONS: The English testicular cancer patients had a statistically significantly higher TML prevalence than the Danish patients. This observation questions the hypothesised biological association between TML and testicular cancer. FUNDING: The Region of Southern Denmark supported this study. TRIAL REGISTRATION: not relevant.
