ABSTRACT

The reactions of the cations with 2-mercapto-5-R-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives were studied conductometrically with the purpose of establishing a new conductometric method for the quantitative analysis of Pb(II) and Cd(II). Aqueous solutions of Pb(NO3)2 and Cd(CH3COO)2 were titrated with hidroalcoholic solutions of 2-mercapto-5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (MATD), 2-mercapto-5-allylamino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (MA1ATD) and 2-mercapto-5-acetylamino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (MAcATD) and 2-mercapto-5-phenilamino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (MFATD) in different concentrations. The reactions takes place at pH 6.5 (realised with acetate buffer). A linear classical titration curves was obtained. In solutions more concentrated than 10(-2) M just one equivalence point can be noticed, corresponding to 1:2 Me:R stoechiometries. For concentration less than 10(-2) M two equivalence point were observed at 1:1 and 2:1 ratio of Me:R, indicating the step formation of the complex. Accurate conductometric determinations can be made using the second break points of the titration curves as equivalence points. The amounts of Cd(II) and Pb(II) taken and recovered are good, with an error less than 1%.

ABSTRACT

The conductometric titration of thiosulfate with silver ions using non-conventional conductivity cells is described. For this purpose conductivity cells with different cell constants and electrode constructions, equipped with silver, amalgamated silver, stainless-steel and polished platinum electrodes were used. Two well-resolved break-points were observed at 1:1 and 2:1 silver/thiosulfate stoichiometries. Accurate conductometric determinations can be made, using the second break-points of the titration curves as equivalence points, in the range of thiosulfate concentrations 10(-4)-10(-2) M. Reverse titrations are less accurate.

ABSTRACT

Twelve patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy (grade 1-6, ATA classification) were treated with Cyclosporin-A, systemically in combination with methylprednisolone. We observed slight or moderate favourable effect in 9 cases. Our data suggest that the benefit was due to the methylprednisolone, the effectivity of which was enhanced by the cyclosporin even in the glucocorticoid-resistant cases.

ABSTRACT

The prognostic value of determination of different antibodies in Graves' disease patients is questionable. The authors simultaneously assessed the generation of cAMP, the TSH-receptor binding inhibitory assay and the detectability of anti-microsomal antibodies by indirect immuno-fluorescence. The tests were performed before, during and after methimazole treatment. During a 12 months' medication all 22 patients became euthyroid. Six months after withdrawal of the drug, 15 patients were still euthyroid (Group A); 7 relapsed (Group B). Patients showing enhanced activities by all three methods, relapsed (5 out of 7 cases of Group B). The results indicate that simultaneous determination of TSI, TBII and anti-microsomal antibodies are of high prognostic value for relapses. These data should be taken into consideration for the further therapy.

ABSTRACT

Generation of cAMP was measured on human thyroid slices and indirect immunofluorescence was carried out on frozen human thyroid sections. Sera from 16 previously not treated thyrotoxic patients and from 5 euthyroid patients were used. The majority of the thyrotoxic sera (13 out of 16) provoked enhanced generation of cAMP and the same cases showed positivity by indirect immunofluorescence. The possible connection between enhanced generation of cAMP and detectability of antibodies binding to different thyroid structures is discussed.

ABSTRACT

A 22-year-old woman had been suffering for 11 years with a REM syndrome. Her symptoms were provoked and aggravated by exposure to sunlight. The administration of hydroxychloroquine sulphate had a quick effect. The drug was given for 6 months, and the patient remained symptom-free even in summer, when sunbathing.
