ABSTRACT

Based on the aftercare scope of a neurosurgical clinic, the article reports on 147 brain injured patients of different age when the accident occurred. Issues discussed include disability severity and prognosis, problems of secondary abnormal behaviour, and longer-term occupational outcomes. 25% of the adult brain injured patients were working full-time six months after the accident, 34% worked part-time and received a disability pension, and 41% were disability pensioners without part-time job. The share of occupationally reintegrated persons is higher in the younger age group although they had sustained more serious cerebral injuries than older ones.

ABSTRACT

First results in the occupational rehabilitation of teenagers with brain damage in early childhood demonstrate that in cases of mild brain damage and promising family conditions almost 60% of the volunteers were on the job as skilled workers one year after the education. In the group with severe brain damage and unfavourable family conditions one third of the volunteers were on the job one year after cessation of the education. Several psychodiagnostic, prognostic, and social psychological parameters that cause these results are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Four concepts of therapy, their theoretical basis, their aims, and their methods are presented and the effectiveness of each measured psychometrically. All call for early betterment under optimum organisation. Therapeutic methods for use in special forms of aphasia are being tested but display little in the way of uniform results. Special importance is laid on a complex of treatment which would cover movement therapy, communication therapy, and occupational therapy.

ABSTRACT

After a short characterization of the theoretical reference system and the neuropsychological examination methods developed by Luria the Luria-Nebraska test battery is represented and compared with our own experiences. The neuropsychological examination method should mainly be employed for the qualitative determination of patterns of psychic performances and behaviour, after cerebral damage for the determination of the therapeutic effectiveness, and for the objectification of individual problems regarding the confrontation with the handicap.

ABSTRACT

The results presented by A. R. Luria receive special attention in this presentation of three principle directions of current neuropsychological research: the problem of attributing aspects of mental performance to specific regions of the brain, psychometric approaches to brain function measurement, and model approaches to neuropsychological therapy. More recent knowledge pertaining to activity and personality centres diagnosis and efficiency measurements should receive closer consideration. Attention is drawn to the inclusion of learning and concentration training in therapeutic schemes.

ABSTRACT

On the basis of statistical data on neurosurgical therapy measures carried out in two five-year periods in adult patients with cerebral lesions, the need of rehabilitation, psychic peculiarities, and problems of social integration are discussed. The results of the neuropsychological examinations demonstrate the multifactorial dependence of inter-individual and environmental factors in postoperative problems. Aspects of psychological consultation, of special pedagogical therapy measures and of forms of communication are presented as promising possibilities of an optimisation of rehabilitation.
