ABSTRACT

The majority of extensions to general relativity (GR) display mathematical pathologies-higher derivatives, character change in equations that can be classified within partial differential equation theory, and even unclassifiable ones-that cause severe difficulties to study them, especially in dynamical regimes. We present here an approach that enables their consistent treatment and extraction of physical consequences. We illustrate this method in the context of single and merging black holes in a highly challenging beyond GR theory.

ABSTRACT

Our study provides valuable insights into the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and Human Resource Management (HRM). We have minimised bias and ensured reliable findings by employing a systematic literature review and the PRISMA statement. Our comprehensive synthesis of the studies included in this research, along with a bibliometric analysis of articles, journals, indexes, authors' affiliations, citations, keyword co-occurrences, and co-authorship analysis, has produced robust results. The discussion of our findings focuses on critical areas of interest, such as AI and Talent, AI Bias, Ethics and Law, and their impact on Human Resource (HR) management. Our research highlights the recognition by organisations of the importance of talent management in achieving a competitive advantage as higher-level skills become increasingly necessary. Although some HR managers have adopted AI technology for talent acquisition, our study reveals that there is still room for improvement. Our study is in line with previous research that acknowledges the potential for AI to revolutionise HR management and the future of work. Our findings emphasise the need for HR managers to be proactive in embracing technology and bridging the technological, human, societal, and governmental gaps. Our study contributes to the growing body of AI and HR management knowledge, providing essential insights and recommendations for future research. The importance of our study lies in its focus on the role of HR in promoting the benefits of AI-based applications, thereby creating a larger body of knowledge from an organisational perspective.

ABSTRACT

One of the most popular tasks used to test statistical learning (SL) involves asking participants to identify which of two stimuli, a triplet presented during the previous familiarization phase versus a new sequence made of the same stimuli never presented together, is more familiar based on the stream presented before, that is, to perform a two-alternative forced-choice (2-AFC) task. Despite the widespread use of this task, it has come under increasing criticism in current cognitive research due to psychometric flaws. A common practice to improve SL measurement involves increasing the number of 2-AFC trials by presenting the same items (triplets and foils) several times during the test phase. This work aimed to directly analyze the effect that this practice entails by examining how the proportion of correct discriminations of three-syllable nonsense words presented during the familiarization phase of an auditory triplet embedded task changed as the number of 2-AFC item repetitions increased. We also tested whether this effect was modulated by the predictability of the "words" embedded in the auditory streams (high and low) and the conditions under which they were presented to participants (implicit and explicit). Results showed that 2-AFC item repetitions had indeed detrimental effects on SL measurement, as indexed by a significant decrease in the proportion of correct discriminations as the number of items repetitions increased, both in the 2-AFC task performed under implicit and explicit conditions, although, in the first case, only for low-predictable "words." These findings recommend caution when using this strategy to improve SL measurement. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Official authorities are in charge of communicating with the public in a consistent and coherent manner. The impact of social media on managing the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic potentially influenced social behavior in Brazil. OBJECTIVE: Using Twitter, this study analyzes communications about the COVID-19 pandemic from official agencies of the Brazilian government and key public sector decision-makers. METHOD: We captured public Twitter messages about COVID-19 exchanged between authorities at the federal, state, and municipal levels of government. These messages were further classified into guidance and information messages or disinformation messages. Finally, through analysis of tweets and their frequency, we evidenced the level of information generated by the three levels of government. RESULTS: Our analyses show an underestimation of the magnitude of the pandemic by Brazilian government authorities. None of the spheres of government anticipated the imminent health crisis, did not issue good recommendations and guidelines, and did not take preventive actions. CONCLUSION: The lack of governmental actions and adequate guidance in Brazil has led to an explosive increase in infected people and deaths. Surprisingly, this was not due to technical or structural reasons. It resulted from conflicting communication strategies implemented by the federal, state, and municipal governments in attempts to minimize the effects of COVID-19 on their local health structures.

ABSTRACT

Sarcomas are an unusual group of tumors, accounting for ~1% of cancer in adults. Immunotherapy has been shown to be a potential therapeutic option for the management of patients with cancer. However, there is still insufficient information on the action of immunotherapy on sarcomas. A 16-year-old male patient, diagnosed in December 2013 with grade III soft-tissue sarcoma in the right arm, was admitted to a private oncology service after relapse following surgical treatment. The patient underwent chemotherapy with ifosfamide plus adriamycin for 4 cycles, associated with adjuvant radiotherapy, followed by a new resection to remove the residual lesion. A year later, imaging tests identified pulmonary micronodules, and a new resection was performed. After immunohistochemical evaluation of biopsy, a large presence of programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) marker was identified in tumor tissue and immunotherapy with nivolumab was performed. At present, the patient is in immunotherapeutic treatment (42 cycles), presenting an excellent general condition and without any symptoms, and a decrease in neoplastic lung masses. The literature recommends three cycles of anthracycline plus ifosfamide as adjuvant therapy to surgical treatment. Combined surgery plus adjuvant therapy has shown benefits in malignant tumors. Immunotherapy is an important therapeutic option for soft-tissue sarcomas with high programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)/PD-L1 expression. Treatment for high grade soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is still limited, due to tumor heterogeneity, and further studies are needed to consolidate the possibility of using immunotherapy to treat these neoplasms. When significant levels of specific biomarkers are present in tumor tissue, immunotherapy may be beneficial as shown by the present case report.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This article aims to highlight the implications of disabilities in attendance, retention and progression in primary schools, using binary logistic statistical modeling. After presenting the different concepts of disability using the 2000 Census, we analyze the following questions. School progression is investigated using a measure called Grade Progression Probability (GPP), with the three most relevant points in the development of basic education. The results show wide disparity disabilities in determining the elements investigated. In general, all conditions are factors discouraging development in the school life. However, the implication of disabilities on the GPP decreases with each grade in elementary school, being less significant at each subsequent grade. Among the issues we analyzed, grade retention demonstrated a more significant variation, given the nature of controlling socioeconomic factors. Moreover, this study contains results and points to contributions to the scientific development of this area.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of moderate aerobic physical conditioning on the body weight and weight gain of rats whose mothers were fed a low protein diet during gestation and lactation. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were bred from dams fed a normal- (17 percent casein) or low-protein (8 percent casein) diet, constituting the initial nourished (n=18) and malnourished (n=17) groups. After weaning, they were fed the standard diet of the laboratory, with normal protein content (Labina®, Purina). At the age of 60 days, the animals were divided into four groups: inactive and well nourished (n=9), active and well nourished (n=7), inactive and malnourished from conception until weaning (n=8) and active and malnourished from conception until weaning (n=9). Moderate aerobic physical conditioning was done on a treadmill for 8 weeks, 5 days per week, 60 minutes per day. All animals were killed after this training period. Body weight (g) and weight gain ( percent) were analyzed. RESULTS: Lower body weights were seen in animals that were inactive and malnourished from conception until weaning (247.00: 134.00 - 335.00) and active and malnourished from conception until weaning (245.00: 166.00 - 324.50) when compared with the animals that were inactive and well nourished (303.75: 176.00 - 372.00) and active and well nourished (290.25: 190.00 - 372.00) (p<0.05). Weight gain was higher in the animals from the inactive and malnourished group (35.40: -6.20 - 77.10) in comparison with the inactive and well nourished group (24.30: -7.50 - 44.30) (p<0.05) and the active and malnourished group (20.50: 2.30 - 59.00) (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Moderate aerobic physical conditioning had a beneficial effect on the animals that were malnourished during their mothers' gestation and lactation as it reduced their rapid weight gain.
