ABSTRACT
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Changes in physicochemical properties because of implant material aging and natural deterioration in the oral environment can facilitate microbial colonization and disturb the soft-tissue seal between the implant surfaces. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of aging time on the physicochemical profile of titanium (Ti) and zirconia (ZrO2) implant materials. Further microbiology and cell analyses were used to provide insights into the physicochemical implications of biological behavior. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Disk-shaped specimens of Ti and ZrO2 were submitted to roughness, morphology, and surface free energy (SFE) analyses before nonaging (NA) and after the aging process (A). To simulate natural aging, disks were subjected to low-temperature degradation (LTD) by using an autoclave at 134 ºC and 0.2 MPa pressure for 20 hours. The biological activities of the Ti and ZrO2 surfaces were determined by analyzing Candida albicans (C. albicans) biofilms and human gingival fibroblast (HGF) cell proliferation. For the microbiology assays, a variance analysis method (ANOVA) was used with the Tukey post hoc test. For the evaluation of cellular proliferation, the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn multiple comparisons were used. RESULTS: Ti nonaging (TNA) and ZrO2 nonaging (ZNA) disks displayed hydrophilic and lipophilic properties, and this effect was sustained after the aging process. Low-temperature degradation resulted in a modest change in intermolecular interaction, with 1.06-fold for TA and 1.10-fold for ZA. No difference in biofilm formation was observed between NA and A disks of the same material. After 48 hours, the viability of the attached HGF cells was very similar to that in the NA and A groups, regardless of the tested material. CONCLUSION: The changes in the physicochemical properties of Ti and ZrO2 induced by the aging process do not interfere with C. albicans biofilm formation and HGF cell attachment, even after long-term exposure.

Abstract: Studying feeding habits is crucial to understand complex predator-prey interactions. Even though anurans play a fundamental role in the control of arthropods populations, the diet of several Neotropical species is poorly known. We describe the frequency and occurrence of prey items and their dry mass in stomach contents of the Robber Frog Pristimantis paulodutrai in the north east of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Based on the stomach contents of 30 individuals, Araneae, Isopoda, and Formicidae were found to be the most important food items. The generalist diet of this frog, which seems to be phylogenetically conserved among Pristimantis, is likely to be linked to its ecological dominance in the habitats surveyed. Our study corroborates the high trophic relevance of Robber Frogs in tropical forests as generalist predators.
Resumo: Estudar hábitos alimentares é crucial para entender as complexas interações predador-presa. Embora os anuros tenham papel fundamental no controle das populações de artrópodes, a dieta de várias espécies neotropicais é pouco conhecida. Descrevemos a frequência e a ocorrência de presas e sua massa seca no conteúdo estomacal da rã Pristimantis paulodutrai, no nordeste do estado da Bahia, Brasil. Com base no conteúdo estomacal de 30 indivíduos, Araneae, Isopoda e Formicidae foram os itens alimentares mais importantes. A dieta generalista desta rã, a qual parece ser conservada filogeneticamente entre os Pristimantis, provavelmente está ligada à sua dominância ecológica nos habitats pesquisados. Nosso estudo corrobora a alta relevância trófica dos Robber Frogs em florestas tropicais como predadores generalistas.
ABSTRACT
O trabalho verifica o conhecimento e a prática profissional relacionados às formas de diagnóstico e manejo da ansiedade odontológica pelos cirurgiões-dentistas. Os profissionais preencheram um questionário autoaplicável sobre diagnóstico e tratamento da ansiedade odontológica. No total, 967 cirurgiões-dentistas responderam ao questionário, dos quais aproximadamente 65% relataram fazer algum tipo de avaliação da ansiedade. Nenhum participante relatou utilizar técnicas semiobjetivas do tipo questionário estruturado. Aproximadamente 32% dos profissionais relataram utilizar um protocolo específico para a abordagem do paciente ansioso, sendo os mais utilizados a conversa (38%), a prescrição farmacológica (23%) ou algum tipo de condicionamento do paciente (17%). O trabalho discute a importância de incorporar no ensino da odontologia conhecimentos advindos da psicologia, favorecendo o desenvolvimento de habilidades relacionadas ao diagnóstico e o manejo da ansiedade odontológica (AU)
