ABSTRACT

The growing danger of a nuclear holocaust has intensified two aspects of the human predicament that concern both religion and psychiatry: the inevitability of death and the disastrous consequences of the characteristic termed pride by theologians and narcissism by psychiatrists. For the first time, humans have power to exterminate themselves and death threatens all ages equally. Pride of power causes leaders to exaggerate their ability to control nuclear weapons; moral pride leads to demonizing enemies. The author considers implications for psychiatrists and clergy, with special reference to preventing a nuclear holocaust(AU)

ABSTRACT

Nuclear arms are a phenomenon with no historical precedent, yet people--and their national leaders--confront the prospect of nuclear war with psychological attitudes from an earlier, simpler time. This paper considers the meaning of our image of the "enemy," analyzes the appropriateness and effectiveness of a policy of deterrence, and considers approaches to doing away with war and to easing international antagonisms through the pursuit of mutually beneficial goals.

ABSTRACT

Effects of current social and political forces on mental health are considered, with particular attention to the way in which the unrelenting acceleration of change undermines the individual's sense of temporal continuity. The contributions and limitations of the mental health professions are examined, and it is suggested that the major challenge of psychotherapy in our time may be to aid individuals in coping with a world in flux.
