ABSTRACT

Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is an evidence-based treatment for high-risk youth and their families shown to reduce subsequent delinquent activity. This study investigated (1) re-arrest rates of a statewide MST dissemination; and (2) the relation of child, family, and case characteristics to re-arrest rates following receipt of MST. Analyses examined outcomes for 633 youth following referral to MST. Separate models examined predictors of general re-arrest of any type and of more serious misdemeanor or felony arrests. Sixty-five percent of youth experienced a new arrest of any type within 12-months of MST initiation; fewer (53%) experienced a misdemeanor or felony charge in that timeframe. Recipients who were younger, had an externalizing behavior disorder, and had a greater number and severity of pre-MST charges were more likely to recidivate. Findings highlight potential child and case factors that may account for variability in treatment effects when MST is implemented broadly within a system.

ABSTRACT

Research on implementation science has increased significantly over the past decade. In particular, psychologists have looked closely at the value and importance of bridging the gap between science and practice. As evidence-based practices (EBPs) become more prevalent, concrete mechanisms are needed to bring these scientifically supported treatments and interventions to community-based settings. Intermediary and purveyor organizations (IPOs) have emerged in recent years that specialize in bringing research to practice. Using a framework developed by Franks (), this descriptive study surveyed respondents that self-identified as IPOs and focused on identifying shared definitions, functions, and activities. Results indicated that seven descriptive roles previously identified were supported by this survey and many common shared activities, goals, and functions across these organizations were observed. Further, these organizations appear to be influenced by the growing field of implementation science. Limitations and implications of this study are discussed.

ABSTRACT

In order to establish the status of metal contamination in surface waters in the coastal ocean off Los Angeles, California, we determined their dissolved and particulate pools and compared them with levels reported in the 1970s prior the implementation of the Clean Water Act. These measurements revealed a significant reduction in particulate toxic metal concentrations in the last 33 years with decreases of ∼100-fold for Pb and ∼400-fold for Cu and Cd. Despite these reductions, the source of particulate metals appears to be primarily anthropogenic as enrichment factors were orders of magnitude above what is considered background crustal levels. Overall, dissolved trace metal concentrations in the Los Angeles coastal waters were remarkably low with values in the same range as those measured in a pristine coastal environment off Mexico's Baja California peninsula. In order to estimate the impact of metal contamination on regional phytoplankton, the internalization rate of trace metals in a locally isolated phytoplankton model organism (Synechococcus sp. CC9311) was also determined showing a rapid internalization (in the order of a few hours) for many trace metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb) suggesting that those metals could potentially be incorporated into the local food webs.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes Extended Day Treatment (EDT), an innovative intermediate-level service for children and adolescents with serious emotional and behavioral disorders, delivered in the after school hours. The current paper describes the core components of the EDT model of care within the context of statewide systems of care, including its theoretical foundations, core service components, relation to evidence-based practices, workforce composition and staff training, and data collection and reporting mechanisms. Recommendations are provided for statewide implementation, followed by discussion of model development as an approach to systems reform for the treatment of children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders.

ABSTRACT

Children who suffer from childhood seizure disorders, especially epilepsy, have various potential psychiatric issues and concerns that the treating physician and psychiatric consultant should consider. These children are at increased risk of adjustment reactions, anxiety and mood disorders, ADHD, learning difficulties, and familial and social stress. Because of potential risks and vulnerabilities for the development of comorbid psychiatric conditions and the increased risk for individual, familial, and social impairment, a psychiatric consultation to children and families dealing with epilepsy may play an important role in the successful management of this complex disorder.
