ABSTRACT

Here, we report the process for creating a patient visible quality educational display to highlight the collaborative quality working practices of Radiation Oncology clinicians and staff in the main Radiotherapy Centers throughout three Canadian provinces. These processes are often not visible to patients yet they speak directly to the standards of care delivered at these centers. The Canadian Partnership for Quality Radiotherapy (CPQR) Quality Assurance Guidelines for Canadian Radiation Treatment Programs guided this process. The display slides created were approved by the local Radiation Oncology departmental leadership for each participating medical center as well as patient focus groups and revised with feedback from both perspectives. Of 27 patients/families who evaluated the resulting educational patient display, 70% expressed high engagement in the information presented, and 81% felt the display will be of interest to patients receiving radiotherapy treatment. Patients/families surveyed reported that the displayed content made them feel more informed and more comfortable with their treatments. Survey data from this project indicates that increasing transparency and deepening patient education about the quality working practices behind radiotherapy treatments has the potential to empower patients receiving radiotherapy and increase their confidence in the care they are receiving.

ABSTRACT

Introdução: A tecnologia CAD/CAM possui múltiplas aplicações protéticas, incluindo a prótese total.

Introduction: CAD/CAM technology has multiple prosthetic applications, including complete denture. Objectives: To carry out a literature review on the applicability of CAD/CAM systems in the manufacture of complete dentures in order to elucidate the properties of denture made using this technology and the characteristics of this system. Methodology: The search for scientific articles that contemplated the theme was done through PUBMED and SCIELO databases, without period restriction. The titles and abstracts were analyzed and then access to the full text. Results: Among the characteristics of the CAD/CAM system, the studies cited a lower need for consultations and clinical time. It requires knowledge of the technology by the dental surgeon and the higher labor cost is one of the disadvantages of its use. As regards the properties, the reduction of the roughness and porosity, as well as the adhesion of Candida albicans to the base of the prosthesis and residual monomer content was observed. Higher hardness of surface is verified compared to conventional full dentures. Conclusion: Fewer appointments and clinical time are characteristics of the use of CAD/CAM system in complete denture. Higher hardness of the prosthesis and reduction of the roughness, porosity, adhesion of C. albicans and residual monomer content are properties that the complete dentures present when made by this technology(AU)

ABSTRACT

Numerous attempts have been made to alleviate the pains suffered by individuals, from ancient times to the most recent scientific researches; so the interest and the curiosity of professional and patient seek new alternatives of complementary and auxiliary treatments, and that is why this This study aims to analyze the use of acupuncture in dentistry as a complementary and main therapy in the treatment of orofacial pain by evaluating the charts of patients attended at a dental clinic in João Pessoa (PB Brazil), where orofacial pain was the main symptom presented and patients were submitted to treatment with acupuncture. The universe consisted of 20 medical records, and the sample consisted of 10 participants. It was verified that 80% of the sample were females, with mean age of 45 years, 90% used medication and 70% participated in other medical treatments. It was shown that 50% of the participants presented severe pain before acupuncture and 100% reported mild pain after the end of the treatment. With the research, satisfaction was observed in the results obtained with the use of acupuncture as a complementary treatment in the treatment of orofacial pain.

ABSTRACT

The candidiasis is the most common opportunistic fungal infection is Candida albicans more species causing infections in humans, particularly for immune compromised patients. This study aimed to carry out a survey of the literature on the antifungal activity of natural products based on plants against Candida species. A survey of the clinical trials literature was performed through the PUBMED and SCIELO databases, from 2000 to 2016. Nine scientific papers on the subject were found and were part of the study. Six medicinal plants were mentioned, among which all showed antifungal activity against Candida. It was observed that the studied medicinal plants showed significant antifungal activity against species of this yeast.
