ABSTRACT

A simple and straightforward method using microwave-assisted reactions is presented for the functionalization of graphene oxide with aromatic and non-aromatic amines, notedly dibenzylamine (DBA), p-phenylenediamine (PPD), diisopropylamine (DPA) and piperidine (PA). The as-synthesized amine-functionalized graphene oxide materials (amine-GO) were characterized using spectroscopic techniques including XRD, FTIR, 13C NMR, XPS, TEM for imaging and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The characterization confirmed the functionalization for all amines, reaching relatively high surface nitrogen atomic concentrations of up to 8.8%. The investigations of electrochemical behavior for the amine-GOs show the significant improvement in GO's electrochemical properties through amine functionalization, exhibiting long life cycle stability and reaching specific capacitance values of up to 290 F g-1 and 260 F g-1 for GO-PA and GO-DPA samples, respectively, confirming their potential application as alternative supporting materials in supercapacitors.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate Himatanthus drasticus latex in a mice wound healing experimental model. Animals were divided into four groups (n=7) according to the treatments: GI - saline 0.9% (control), GII - mineral oil (vehicle), GIII - H. drasticus commercial latex (HdCL) and GIV - H. drasticus mixed isolated fraction (MIF, 1 mg/mL). The treatments were applied topically once daily, 50 µL for 14 consecutive days. Macroscopic lesions were evaluated, considering parameters such as swelling, redness, granulation tissue and reepithelialization. VEGF+, CD68+ expressions and mast cells (Toluidin blue stain) were evaluated. HdCL induced higher contraction and exuberant granulation tissue (P > 0.05). HdCL showed a mild inflammatory process while MIF induced intense infiltrate inflammatory predominantly by lymphocytes, vascular congestion, bleeding and did not presented full reepithelialization. Reorganization of collagen fibers (red picrosirius stain) was observed. CD68+ expression and mast cells were presented as moderate, intense and mild in GI, GIII and GIV, respectively. Neovascularization occurred in all groups, while VEGF+ expression was intense in MIF in relation to HdCL. We concluded that HdCL presents wound healing potential, through modulation of mast cells, CD68+ and VEGF+ expressions that can be associated to triterpenes presence according MIF isolated from HdCL.(AU)

ABSTRACT

In this study, cobalt (Co) was recycled from spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and used to synthesize cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4-LIBs), which was applied as a catalyst for heterogeneous photo Fenton reactions that discolored methylene blue (MB) dye. The co-precipitation method was used to synthesize CoFe2O4-LIBs and CoFe2O4-R nanoparticles with spinel structures using as raw materials of the LIB cathodes and commercial reagents. X-ray diffraction (XRD) identified the formation of spinel-type CoFe2O4, which formed clusters that could be seen under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and nanometric particles seen under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP OES) analysis was used to determine the concentrations of metals present in the ferrite, which reached 6.5% (w/w) of Co. The optimal conditions for discoloring the dye were evaluated using a factorial design. Using CoFe2O4 as a catalyst, the best conditions for catalytic reaction were pH 3, 30.0 mg of catalyst, and 8.0 mL of H2O2 73% (v/v). Discoloration efficiencies of 87.3% and 87.7% were obtained from CoFe2O4-R and CoFe2O4-LIBs, respectively. Therefore, CoFe2O4-LIBs proved to be an efficient catalyst for discoloring MB dye using heterogeneous photo-Fenton reactions. This work is of scientific, social, economic, and environmental interest. It investigates the process of synthesizing, characterizing CoFe2O4LIBs and the efficiency of degrading MB dye, subjects that have economic and environmental, and therefore, social interest. The work has scientific interest particularly because of the correlation between the structure of the recycled material and its catalytic properties.

ABSTRACT

This article presents the realization of many self-reversible quantum logic gates using two-qubit quadrupolar spin 3/2 systems. Such operations are theoretically described using propagation matrices for the RF pulses that include the effect of the quadrupolar evolution during the pulses. Experimental demonstrations are performed using a generalized form of the recently developed method for quantum state tomography in spin 3/2 systems. By doing so, the possibility of controlling relative phases of superimposed pseudo-pure states is demonstrated. In addition, many aspects of the effect of the quadrupolar evolution, occurring during the RF pulses, on the quantum operations performance are discussed. Most of the procedures presented can be easily adapted to describe selective pulses of higher spin systems (>3/2) and for spin 1/2 under J couplings.

ABSTRACT

Ten pluriparous mares were used as donors to supply embryos which were transferred into 103 recipients, 31 of which were nulliparous, 34 were pluriparous and lactating, and 38 were pluriparous and non-lactating. The embryos were recovered eight days after ovulation and pregnancy was confirmed by ultrasound six days after the transfer; the length of the embryos was measured ultrasonographically on days 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 25 and 30 after the embryo transfer. One hundred and fifteen of 200 flushes provided embryos, 12 being degenerate and 103 being viable embryos. From the 103 embryo transfers carried out, 51 pregnancies were confirmed by ultrasound within 30 days; 16 of the 31 nulliparous recipients became pregnant, 16 of the 34 pluriparous lactating recipients and 19 of the 38 pluriparous non-lactating recipients. There were no significant differences between the groups of mares in the mean (sd) rate of growth of their embryos between 12 and 30 days of gestation.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the superovulatory response and ova/embryo recovery from Nelore donors following treatment with a controlled internal drug releasing device and estradiol benzoate (CIDR-B program) at different stages of the estrous cycle. The control group (TI; n=40) received a standard superovulation protocol with females of this group being between days 9 and 12 of the estrous cycle (estrus = day 0). The donors that received a CIDR-B program containing 1.9 g progesterone and an intramuscular injection of estradiol benzoate (2 mg) were at day 0 (TII; n=30), between days 2 and 6 (TIII; n=30), days 7 and 12 (TIV; n=30), days 13 and 16 (TV; n=30) and days 17 and 20 (TVI; n=30) of the estrous cycle. Superovulation was induced with 400 IU of p-FSH, divided into eight decreasing doses (80/80; 60/60; 40/40; 20/20) at intervals of 12h. The donors received PGF2alpha (Cloprostenol) 48 h after beginning the treatment and CIDRs were removed 12h later. Artificial inseminations (AI) were performed 12 and 22 h after the initiation of estrus and embryos were collected 7 days after AI. The mean numbers (+/-S.E.M.) of total ova and embryos, viable (transferable) and degenerated embryos were 14.2+/-11.3, 7.4+/-6.9 and 3.2+/-3.5 (TI), 13.3+/-10.4, 7.1+/-6.2 and 3.3+/-4.3 (TII), 13.5+/-7.0, 8.1+/-6.7 and 2.3+/-3.0 (TIII), 17.4+/-9.9, 9.4+/-6.9 and 4.0+/-4.4 (TIV), 16.9+/-8.8, 9.8+/-8.1 and 2.7+/-2.5 (TV) and 13.0+/-7.8, 7.2+/-6.9 and 2.3+/-2.5 (TVI), with no significant differences (P>/=0.05) among groups. Pregnancy rates of 67.1% (TI; n=86/128), 60.8% (TII; n=59/97), 62.5% (TIII; n=73/115), 64.1% (TIV; n=84/131), 72.3% (TV; n=81/112) and 60.6% (TVI; n=63/104) were obtained with embryos transferred from these collections and did not differ significantly (P>/=0.05) among groups. The results of the present study allow us to conclude that a combination of steroid hormones may be used prior to superovulation in Nelore donors, at any stage of the estrous cycle without affecting the efficiency of embryo transfer programs.
