ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The Quota Law in Brazil determines that the organizations with over 100 workers must hire people with disabilities. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to verify the willingness of future professionals to work with people with disabilities. PARTICIPANTS: A survey was conducted with 341 Brazilian university students. METHODS: The following factors were taken into account: the Quota Law favorability (attitude); the conceptions about disability (beliefs); the evaluation of consequences (positive or negative) which the individual attributes to the fact of working with people with disabilities; and the perception of the level of difficulty to insert these people (beliefs about control). RESULTS: Three patterns of willingness have been identified: willingness guided by the focus on the disability; willingness guided by the instrumental focus; and willingness guided towards accessibility. It has also been verified that these forms of willingness were associated to the perception of difficulties in inserting people with disabilities. CONCLUSIONS: These results empirically reinforce the fact that part of the difficulties in inserting people with disabilities is found in the social environment and conditions, suggesting that these aspects need to be taken into account in the studies on attitudes towards people with disabilities.

ABSTRACT

This research intends to contribute to understanding about the process of insertion of people with disability (PwDs) in the workplace. The main objective was to verify whether the managers have different ways of seeing people with disabilities, considering the type of disability. It was conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study, with a sample of 123 managers of PwDs, working in 14 companies located in Espírito Santo/Brazil. The results showed that managers see the PwD differently, depending on the type of disability. However, in qualitative analysis, the managers demonstrated the existence of similarities in the assessment of performance of these people

ABSTRACT

One century after the discovery of Chagas disease, it is still considered as a major health problem, causing more deaths in the Americas than any other parasitic disease. The northwest region of São Paulo, a macro-region that includes cities with a high-quality of life, has particularly high rates of Chagas disease. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the number of patients with Chagas disease, and to identify the triatomine fauna in the northwest region of São Paulo State, and to cytogenetically analyze Triatoma sordida mutants, thus providing new knowledge to control these species and avoid possible infections by Chagas disease. A total of 700 Chagas patients of both genders and variable age, who were born in and residents of the northwest region of the State of São Paulo were recruited for this study. Regarding the entoepidemiological fauna, both T. sordida and Rhodnius neglectus were captured from 2004 to 2011 in the northwest region of the São Paulo; however, T. sordida was the predominant species. Some of these collected triatomines were infected by Trypanosoma cruzi in several developmental stages. Furthermore, the lactoacetic orcein method was used for cytogenetic analysis. Several abnormalities were observed during meiosis of the T. sordida mutants, including condensed chromosomes with no chiasma, chromatin bridges between the autosomes, and some non-pairing homologous chromosomes. Thus, our study suggests that Chagas disease is currently not under control in Brazil. Furthermore, we suggest that cryptic speciation may be occurring in populations of T. sordida of Brazil. Further studies are necessary to understand the mechanisms behind these phenomena.

ABSTRACT

The thermal gelling property of Poloxamer 407-nimesulide gels was characterized by rheological studies. Nimesulide, a local anti-inflammatory and anesthetic drug used for the treatment of acute and chronic pain, has a short duration of action and a long-acting single-dose injection would be of clinical importance. Thus a poloxamer 407 gel applied intramuscularly could prolong the release and action of nimesulide. In this study, aqueous gels with nimesulide, containing three different concentrations of Poloxamer 407, were prepared. Viscosity measurements were performed by rheologial studies to obtain the optimal sol-gel transition temperature. Poloxamer 407 gels are pseudoplastic and viscoelastic materials, which have an elastic modulus (G), characteristic of the solid, and a viscous modulus (G), characteristic of the liquid material. Moreover, being pseudoplastic gels, when they are deformed by shearing, their viscosity decreases. Increase of the polymer concentration increased the viscosity of the gels, which could affect the releasing process of nimesulide. Furthermore, the presence of nimesulide led to a lowering of the sol-gel transition temperature

ABSTRACT

Polylactic acid (PLA-L) microspheres were prepared as a biodegradable polymeric carrier for a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, nimesulide. The preparation of this system was performed by the classical emulsion solvent-evaporation method. Size analysis of the microparticulate system showed that unloaded and loaded nimesulide-PLA microspheres had average diameters of about 42.9 nm and 2.1 microm, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of loaded and unloaded microsphere samples showed that the particles shape were perfectly spherical, the loading efficiency of nimesulide in PLA microspheres was 70%; Thus, the microparticle system evaluated in this work showed the potential to act as a sustained release system for nimesulide: in vitro dissolution profiles showed the PLA-L microparticles were able to sustain the release of the drug for a considerable period of time (28.7% within 108 h).
