ABSTRACT

Objective The Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire for Scoliosis (BIDQ-S) for scoliosis derives from the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire (BIDQ) with specific adaptation for scoliosis patients. Despite its significance and applicability, this instrument has never been translated into Brazilian Portuguese. The current study aimed to translate, transculturally adapt, and validate the BIDQ-S into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods BIDQ-S was translated and culturally adapted into Brazilian Portuguese using the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) criteria. The questionnaire validation relied on internal consistency and comparison with the Cobb angle, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS-22). The Brazilian version (BR-)BIDQ-S validation occurred in a sample of 35 adolescents with scoliosis waiting for specialized treatment. Results Internal consistency of the BR-BIDQ-S was 0.899 according to the Cronbach's index (i.e., virtually perfect). Although BR-BIDQ-S did not correlate with the Cobb angle, it presented correlations with the Physical, Emotional, and Social domains from the PedsQL and the Function/Activity domain from the SRS-22. Conclusion BR-BIDQ-S was reliable in evaluating the body image of adolescents with scoliosis, presenting an internal consistency of 0,899 (virtually perfect). Moreover, similar to the original instrument, it correlated with PedsQL and SRS-22.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: This study evaluated the recognition (imitation, identity, and identification) and naming of negative (anger and sadness) and positive (joy and surprise) emotional stimuli alongside the influence of the types of stimuli (social-female, social-male, family, and emoji) in children and young adults with autism and Down syndrome, via tasks applied by the family and mediated by technological resources, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Five children and two young adults with autism and one child and two young adults with Down syndrome participated. Identity, recognition, naming, and imitation tasks were planned and implemented using facial stimuli with evaluative (without differential consequence) and teaching (with differential consequence, tips, and learning criteria) functions, aiming at the emergence of emotional naming from the recognition teaching tasks. The baseline results showed that, for participants who had a shorter response time for the same gender, the response time difference was on average 57.28% lower. Regarding the emotional valence, 50% of the participants showed differences in the correct answers, depending on the positive and negative valence, and 66.66% showed differences in the response time depending on the emotional valence. After the teaching procedure, the participants showed a greater number of correct answers in the tasks, regardless of the stimulus type and emotional valence, creating an opportunity for generalizing learning of emotion recognition and naming, in addition to consolidating the feasibility of teaching strategies mediated by technological resources and applied by family members.

ABSTRACT

The educational inclusion of students with autism and/or intellectual disabilities in regular education has highlighted the urgency of initial and continuing education programs with evidence-based educational practices. The objective was to evaluate the structure of a remote training process for the elaboration, application and evaluation of a behavioral intervention in the inclusive educational perspective and, complementarily, a specific objective was to characterize the social attitudes of educational agents participating in the training. The training took place in two formats. In the first, all material was made available in a shared folder and in the second, in a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). In both formats, the structure had a theoretical and practical part, by reading and carrying out exercises and discussions. In the practical part, participants had the opportunity to work with families and students with autism and/or intellectual disability to identify the needs and priorities of the family for the collaborative elaboration of an intervention plan (systematization of practices), implementation and analysis of practices. For the characterization of the sample, personal information, previous experiences, familiarity with technological tools, and knowledge about the theoretical concepts of Behavior Analysis were collected. A characterization of social attitudes towards inclusion was carried out and the social validity of participants regarding training was analyzed. The results of the training identified correlations between the level of social attitudes and engagement in the practical activities delivered, in addition to the relationship between the drop in the number of participants, the fulfillment of tasks and difficulties in contacting the family. The study discussed strategies that aim at possibilities of scaling continuing education in a systematic and scientific way in this area of professional activity.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) corresponds to episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction during sleep. The gold standard for diagnosing OSA is polysomnography; however, metabolomics is an innovative and highly sensitive method that seeks to identify and quantify small molecules in biological systems. Identify the metabolites most frequently associated with obstructive sleep apnea in adults. The search for articles was conducted between October 2020 and August 2021, in electronic databases, such as MEDLINE/PubMed, Scielo, Embase, and Cochrane, through the combination of descriptors: obstructive sleep apnea, metabolomic, adult. This systematic review included all cross-sectional studies published, including human patients aged 18 years or older, of both genders who underwent type I or II polysomnography and metabolomics study. The search strategy selected 3697 surveys, and 4 of them were selected to be a part of this systematic review. Based on the analyzed surveys, it was found that all of them were able to diagnose OSA, reaching a sensitivity of 75-97%, and specificity that ranged from 72 to 100%; besides differentiating patients with OSA (severe, moderate, and mild) from simple snorers with a mean sensitivity of 77.2% and specificity of 66.25%. These findings suggest that, in addition to being used as a screening and diagnostic strategy for OSA, metabolomics has the potential to be used for severity stratification and to monitor the disease's progression.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Studies have shown that narcolepsy patients may present with low serum acylcarnitine levels, demonstrating a dysfunctional beta fatty acid oxidation pathway in these patients. Objective: Evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of L-carnitine as a treatment for narcolepsy patients. Methods: This study runned in form of systematic review. The terms used for the search: ("narcolepsy"[MeSH Terms] OR "narcolepsy"[All Fields]) AND ("carnitine"[MeSH Terms] OR "carnitine"[All Fields] OR "l carnitine"[All Fields]). Were included all surveys published until January 2021, with the diagnosis of narcolepsy, that performed drug treatment with I-carnitine. The clinical endpoints of interest were: excessive daytime sleepiness, dissociative REM sleep manifestations: cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations, and early REM sleep (REM sleep naps, SOREMP). Results: L-carnitine was found to be well-tolerated and without side effects in all surveys, at dosages ranging from 500 to 510 mg/day. Newborns did not present complications during delivery. Conclusion: This study corroborates the efficacy and good tolerability of L-carnitine therapy as a treatment for patients with narcolepsy, including during pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

Prostate cancer is an important cause of death in the male population and for which there is no satisfactory chemotherapy. Herein a new series of chalcone hybrids containing 2H-1,2,3-triazole core as the ring B has been synthesized and evaluated in vitro against PC-3 prostate cancer cell line. Compounds 4a, 4c and 4e significantly reduced cell viability and showed IC50 of 28.55, 15.64 and 25.56 µM, respectively. The structure-activity relationship supported by computational chemistry points that the polarity of the molecular surface area should have some relevance to the efficiency of the compounds, in particular the ratio of the partial positive charge sites and the total molecular surface area exposed to the cell environment.

ABSTRACT

In the mol-ecular structure of the title compound, C10H10N4O2·H2O, the angle between the triazole and arene rings is 87.39 (5)°. The water of crystallization connects the mol-ecules in the crystal packing. The crystal structure exhibits N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O and O-H⋯N inter-actions, resulting in the formation of a three-dimensional framework. The inter-molecular inter-actions were identified and qu-anti-fied using Hirshfeld surface analysis.

ABSTRACT

4-Oxoquinolines are a class of organic substances of great importance in medicinal chemistry, due to their biological and synthetic versatility. N-1-Alkylated-4-oxoquinoline derivatives have been associated with different pharmacological activities such as antibacterial and antiviral. The presence of a carboxamide unit connected to carbon C-3 of the 4-oxoquinoline core has been associated with various biological activities. Experimentally, the N-ethylation reaction of N-benzyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxamide occurs at the nitrogen of the oxoquinoline group, in a regiosselective way. In this work, we employed DFT methods to investigate the regiosselective ethylation reaction of N-benzyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxamide, evaluating its acid/base behavior and possible reaction paths.

ABSTRACT

With the increasing life expectancy of the world's population, neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), will become a much more relevant public health issue. This fact, coupled with the lack of efficacy of the available treatments, has been driving research directed to the development of new drugs for this pathology. Metal-protein attenuating compounds (MPACs) constitute a promising class of agents with potential application on the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as AD. Currently, most MPACs are based on 8-hydroxyquinoline. Recently, our research group has described the hybrid aroylhydrazone containing the 8-hydroxyquinoline group INHHQ as a promising MPAC. By studying the known structure-related ligand HPCIH, which does not contain the phenol moiety, as a simplified chemical model for INHHQ, we aimed to clarify the real impact of the aroylhydrazone group for the MPAC activity of a compound with potential anti-Alzheimer's activity. The present work describes a detailed solution and solid-state study of the coordination of HPCIH with Zn2+ ions, as well as its in vitro binding-ability towards this metal in the presence of the Aß(1-40) peptide. Similar to INHHQ, HPCIH is able to efficiently compete with Aß(1-40) for Zn2+ ions, performing as expected for an MPAC. The similarity between the behaviors of both ligands is remarkable. Taken together, the data presented herein point to aroylhydrazones, such as the compounds HPCIH and the previously published INHHQ, as encouraging MPACs for the treatment of AD.

ABSTRACT

A new monohydrated polymorph of dexamethasone acetate was crystallized and its crystal structure characterized. The different analytical techniques used for describing its structural and vibrational properties were: single crystal and polycrystal X-ray diffraction, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy. A Hirshfeld surface analysis was carried out through self-arrangement cemented by H-bonds observed in this new polymorph. This new polymorph form appeared because of self-arrangement via classical hydrogen bonds around the water molecule.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: to observe whether a relationship exists between the preference of chewing side, facial anthropometry and electrical activity of masseter muscle in total laryngectomy. METHODS: data collection, performed in the Speech Therapy Cancer Hospital of Pernambuco (HCP), with the participation of fifteen volunteers laryngectomized males and mean age of 64 years. We performed measurement of distances between points and anthropometric facial ex ch in hemifaces of volunteers and later executed EMG of the masseter muscles, bilaterally, in his habitual intercuspal (MHI), unilateral right and left chewing and during mastication. Filming took place during mastication to identify the side of the preference side. RESULTS: individuals whose right side is the masticatory predominance showed of the left side of the face to a greater extent (72.37 mm), while those whose prevalence of side left masticatory had higher estensão the side right (68.85 mm). In unilateral chewing right the electrical activity of the right masseter had an average 123.57% , while the left masseter showed an average 84.85% of the activity in relation to MHI (p = 0.016). CONCLUSION: in laryngectomized anthropometric facial measurements correlate with the preference side chewing and the values of the masseter EMG during mastication.

ABSTRACT

This study trained the responding by exclusion in dogs, based on a conditional discrimination between dictated names and objects, and empirically evaluated the influence in that performance of human social cues (gestures directed to stimuli) towards the opposite stimulus. As a result, both animals showed rapid acquisition of control by the new stimulus, a pattern that persisted even after the inclusion of conflicting social cues toward the wrong stimulus (orally instructing the selection of S+, but pointing to the S-). The influence of conflicting social cues when the stimuli involved were familiar is clear, a pattern showed by the disruption of pre-established control. We discuss the relevance of this study in the comparison of different aspects of the environment on the behavior of dogs, and the need to include control probes for novelty in future research is emphasized (AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate which muscular maneuvers provide larger electric activity (EA) of the suprahyoid (SH) and infrahyoid (IH) muscles to be used as surface electromyography (SEMG) signal normalization reference. METHODS: The electrical potentials of the SH and IH muscles of 12 subjects were evaluated using six muscular maneuvers, involving the position of the tongue and effort. It was selected as maximum voluntary sustained activity maneuver, the one having the minor coefficient of variation and the smallest value for each muscle group. The EA signal was converted using the root mean square in microvolts. It was considered then the maximum signal of each maneuver as the difference between the mean of three measures and the resting potential. RESULTS: The maneuvers that provided higher mean potentials with minor coefficient of variation and smallest P value were incomplete swallowing (IS) with effort (mean potential equal to 56.73±8.68 with coefficient of variation of 15.30%) in SH group, and tongue retracted with mouth open (TROM, mean potential equal to 46.57±7.83 with coefficient of variation of 16.81%) in IH group. CONCLUSION: The IS with effort and TROM maneuvers should be considered for signal normalization in these muscles, respectively, and may provide conditions for using the SEMG in voice clinic. SIGNIFICANCE: The use of normalization standards in researches of SH and IH muscles in the voice area will allow comparisons among future works.

ABSTRACT

Previous analysis of the interaction patterns among a Down Syndrome child and peers in a regular school identified two major problems: fewer acceptance by other children, and flaw mediation of interaction among children. The present research designed, implemented and evaluated an intervention program for this classroom, based on functional analysis procedures, so the teachers could solve these problems, dealing with the child challenging behaviors, mediating interaction and improving the inclusion process in their class. The intervention was based on the co-operative consultancy and consisted on discussions with educators about problems found by using functional analysis and designed strategies to solve them, based on their behavioral function. At the end of the program, child and teacher achieved important behavioral changes. These may be concluded by the expressive decrease of both classes of problem behavior defined as intervention targets (Heteroagressive and Disruptive Behaviors), and also by the expressive growth of effective interventions according to behavior function.(AU)
