ABSTRACT

The sequential optimization of carboxymethylation of pectin by Plackett-Burman (PB) design and response surface methodology (RSM) was reported in this study. PB design was employed to screen the six process variables (ethanol concentration, liquid-polymer ratio, NaOH concentration, CAA concentration, temperature and time). Central composite design (CCD) was used to study the interaction effects of ethanol concentration, NaOH concentration, CAA concentration and time on degree of substitution (DS) in carboxymethylated pectin (CMP). Maximum DS value of 0.496 was predicted at ethanol concentration (80%), NaOH concentration (38%), CAA concentration (8.5%) and time (60 min). The synthesized CMP was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TGA and viscometer. Results of FTIR, XRD and TGA confirmed the modification made in the pectin polymer and highly methylated. Faster release of 5-FU drug was observed with CMP-chitosan nanoparticles as compared to pectin-chitosan nanoparticles and the drug release followed zero order kinetics model.

ABSTRACT

The serum and hepatic enzymes of rats were studied after exposed to country made liquor (CML) along with two chelating agents (glutathione and Selenium). There was a significant increase in several serum enzyme levels (viz., aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, bilirubin) and decrease in various hepatic enzymes (Succinic dehydrogenase, Glucose 6-phosphatase, 5'Nucleotiease, Acid phosphatase, Acid ribonuclease, Cytochrome P-450) due to repeated administration of CML (2ml/100g of body weight). Results of this study revealed that the GSH and Se could give a significant protective action in serum and hepatic enzymes of CML exposed rats.

ABSTRACT

The hypoglycaemic effect of the aqueous extract of the bark of Helicteres isora L. (Sterculiaceae) was investigated in normal, glucose load conditions and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. In normal rats, the aqueous extract of the bark of Helicteres isora L. (100 and 200 mg/kg/p.o.) significantly (P<0.001) reduced the blood glucose levels from 64.5-48.5 and 67-47 mg% 2h after oral administration of bark extract and also significantly lowered the blood glucose in STZ diabetic rats from 68-105 and 66-85.5 mg% 21 days after daily oral administration of the extract (P<0.001). The results suggested that the aqueous extract of bark of Helicteres isora L. possesses a potential hypoglycaemic effect in diabetic rats.

ABSTRACT

Enzyme levels of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) increased following paracetamol induction were significantly lowered due to pretreatment with the beta-carotene (BC). This supplementation reversed the trend inducing a significant decrease in bilirubin and urea levels. Paracetamol administration significantly reduced hepatic glycogen, glutathione (GSH), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione reductase (GSH-R). Pretreatment of rats with BC significantly increased the enzyme activities. The results suggest hepatoprotective activity of BC.

ABSTRACT

The ethanolic extract of Trianthema portulacastrum L. (Aizoaceae) showed a significant dose dependent (100 mg, 200 mg/kg p.o. 10x) protective effect against paracetamol and thioacetamide induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats. The degree of protection was measured by using biochemical parameters like serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin (BRN), and total protein (TP). The plant extract completely prevented the toxic effects of paracetamol (acetaminophen) and thioacetamide on the above serum parameters. A significant hepatoprotective activity of the ethanolic extracts of Trianthema portulacastrum L. was reported.
