ABSTRACT

Natural radionuclides are released into the environment together with fly ash from the coal-burning power plant and cause an increase in the natural radioactivity in environmental samples. The study concerns to the evaluation the influence of Kangal lignite-burning power plant (LBPP) with a power of 457 MWe, which has been in operation since 1989, on natural radionuclide a concentration in surface soil samples around it. Activity concentrations of natural radionuclides (226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 222Rn) in the soil samples, and emanation coefficient (EC) and mass (ERM) and surface (ERS) exhalation rate of radon were determined by using a gamma-ray spectrometer with an HPGe detector. The average values of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 222Rn, EC, ERM and ERS were found as 37±5, 17±3, 222±30Bqkg-1 and 9±1kBqm-3, 12%, 12.1 µBq kg-1 s-1 and 7.1mBqm-2 s-1, respectively. Absorbed gamma dose rate in outdoor air and the corresponding effective dose rate from external exposure and excess lifetime cancer risk were estimated to evaluate radiological hazards for human population. The results revealed that the Kangal LBPP has caused a small increment in 226Ra concentration in the studied area. No influence was observed for 232Th and 40K.

ABSTRACT

The activity level and possible radiological impacts of naturally occurring radionuclides on the health of workers and members of the public, as a result of utilisation of blast furnace slag (BFS) samples as a substitute for aggregate in road construction were investigated by using a gamma-ray spectrometer and potential exposure scenarios given in Radiation Protection 122. The mean activity concentrations of the (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K in BFS samples were found to be 152.4, 54.9 and 183.1 Bq kg(-1), respectively. These values are compared with typical values measured in BFS samples from the European Union countries, which are 270, 70 and 240 Bq kg(-1) for (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K, respectively. The values of radium equivalent activity index calculated for BFS samples were within the recommended safety limits. The highest total annual effective doses evaluated as 0.9 and 0.4 mSv y(-1) for members of the public and workers, respectively, were lower than the annual limit of 1 mSv y(-1).

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this survey was to determine the distribution of terrestrial radionuclides ((238)U, (232)Th and (40)K) in surface soil samples collected from different locations in and around Osmaniye and assess the radiological implications of outdoor external exposure. The activity concentrations of (238)U, (232)Th and (40)K in soil samples ranged from 2.6 to 38.1 Bq kg(-1) with a mean of 10.4±0.7 Bq kg(-1), 3.7-40.5 Bq kg(-1) with a mean of 12.2±0.7 Bq kg(-1) and 30.0-639.7 Bq kg(-1) with a mean of 243.4±12.8 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The concentrations of these radionuclides, presented in this article, were compared with those obtained from similar studies related to Turkey reported in the literature as well as earth's crust average values. The results of the activity concentrations were used to assess the external absorbed gamma dose rate (GDR) in outdoor air and the annual effective dose (AED). The outdoor absorbed GDRs fluctuate from 5.2 to 53.6 nGy h(-1) with a mean of 22.4±9.5. The corresponding mean AED is found to be 0.03 mSv.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Little is known about the impact of nephrostomy tubes on morbidity and quality of life. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The tube dwelling time and the factors influencing it were determined in 165 patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). RESULTS: The mean tube dwelling time was 21+/-30 days. The duration of tube drainage after PCNL was 13+/-17 days. Most of this time was preoperative when the tube was inserted for urgent reasons--obstruction or sepsis (31+/-33 days). On multivariate analysis, the number of secondary PCNLs and postoperative complications were the most significant factors affecting tube dwelling time. Age correlated with intubation time but did not reach statistical significance (P < 0.09). Neither the stone's side and type nor the patient's sex had a significant influence. CONCLUSIONS: A significant factor affecting the duration of tube drainage is preoperative medical evaluation and patient preparation, and these steps should be completed expeditiously in order to minimize the time to PCNL. Completion of PCNL in one session should shorten the postoperative intubation time.

ABSTRACT

5-HT(3) receptors are members of the Cys loop family of ligand-gated ion channels. We used the substituted cysteine accessibility method to identify amino acid residues in the channel forming domain, M2 that face the water-accessible surface and to locate their position in the ion conduction pathway. Cysteine was substituted for each residue, one at a time, in the M2 segment (Asp(274)-Asp(298)). 5-Hydroxytryptamine EC(50) values for functional mutants did not vary from wild type (1.4 +/- 0.2 microm) by more than 10-fold, and five mutants were nonfunctional. Covalent modification of the mutant receptors with sulfydryl reagents revealed 11 residues to be water-accessible, with a pattern consistent with an alpha-helix except at Leu(285) and Leu(293). The data suggest that charge selectivity begins at a more cytoplasmic level than Val(291). Modification at some positions (Val(291), Leu(293), Ile(294), Leu(287), and Ser(280)) resulted in channels that were locked open. Reaction rates with accessible cysteines were voltage-dependent at some residues, suggesting that access occurs via the ion channel. Overall the data observed are similar but not identical to that reported for other members of the family and confirms the high degree of structural and functional homology between receptors in the Cys loop receptor family.

ABSTRACT

Glycolsylated hemoglobin (G Hb) levels and data on adherence and patient-provider discordance in beliefs about diabetes were collected from 42 insulin-requiring patients with diabetes. Discordance was calculated for both degree of discordance (absolute amount of disagreement) and direction of discordance (degree to which physician > patient or patient < physician). Patients generally agreed with physicians in perceptions of severity, costs of adherence, and immediate and long-term benefits of adherence. Significant differences were found between these dimensions. Only discordance on long-term benefits of adherence correlated with adherence, with greater discordance related to greater adherence. Discordance on the cost dimension correlated negatively with G Hb, suggesting better glycemic control with greater disagreement. Those who underestimate the cost of adherence show greater adherence. Adherence did not correlate significantly with glycemic control.

ABSTRACT

A patient with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia was admitted with hematuria and severe anemia after mild recurrent episodes of epistaxis. Telangiectasias were found in the skin and buccal and nasal mucosa. No defect in the coagulation mechanism was found; thrombocyte count and function were normal. On cystoscopy, tortuous engorged vessels, some actively bleeding, were seen in the trigonal mucosa. Biopsy showed enlarged vessels in the lamina propria. Electrocoagulation of the bleeding vessels stopped hematuria, but 6 months later it recurred. This time Nd-YAG laser was used to stop the bleeding after electrocoagulation was ineffective.

ABSTRACT

Colibacillosis is a secondary infection caused by inhalation, particularly in young broilers and poults. The severity of this septicaemic disease is due to a combination of factors as the virulence, exposure to aerogenic infection, the E. coli strains involved and the intensity of the predisposing alteration of the respiratory epithelium by viruses. Mycoplasmas and/or CO2, NH3 and dust in the atmosphere. Despite preventive vaccination against several predisposing viral infections and the successful eradication of M. gallisepticum in the Netherlands, colibacillosis continues to be an important disease in the broiler industry. Treatment is confronted with a number of serious problems: high costs when treating flocks with the correct (relatively high) dosage for a sufficiently long period, resistance to bacterial drugs and drug residues. Despite negligible resorption from the gastrointestinal tract, very satisfactory therapeutic results were obtained by oral treatment, even against in vitro resistant E. colli strains. To explain the mode of action it is suggested that well-absorbed metabolites or degradation products of spectinomycin block the adhesion of bacteria to tissue receptors.

ABSTRACT

Vaccinal reaction and seroresponse induced by an Ulster 2C strain derived Newcastle disease (ND) vaccine (ND) (PoulvacR NDW Broiler) were compared with those due to three other lentogenic ND vaccines (NDP, LZ58 and Clone 30) used in broilers in the Netherlands. Comparisons were made in SPF-WL hens and commercial broilers with maternally derived antibodies, using a fully standardized model. The criteria used were body weight gain and mortality rate following vaccine aerosol exposure and susceptibility to experimentally induced Colibacillosis. The NDW vaccine was the mildest, followed by Clone 30-, LZ58- and NDP vaccine. Although the seroresponse of SPF-WL hens exposed to NDW vaccine was significantly less than that induced by the other vaccines, the response was still substantial. Seroresponse to NDP-, LZ58- and Clone 30 vaccine did not differ significantly mutually. In broilers, serores-ponses to NDW- and Clone 30-vaccine were similar.

ABSTRACT

Adrenocortical rests are uncommon in adults and infrequently undergo malignant changes. Most of the published cases are those of functional tumors allowing preoperative diagnosis on the basis of the resulting endocrinopathy. Most nonfunctioning tumors were found accidentally at operation or autopsy. A case is presented of a parapelvic nonfunctioning adrenocortical rest carcinoma situated in the renal hilus in a fifty-year-old woman. No such tumor has been described previously.

ABSTRACT

Three hundred 7-week-old Beit Dagan female mice underwent right nephrectomy or sham operation, and either remained virgin or were exposed to six repetitive pregnancies. Fractional kidney weight, dry weight and protein content were determined at ages 9, 10, 11, 17 and 26 weeks corresponding to the ends of the first, second and third trimester of the first pregnancy and completion of the third and sixth pregnancies respectively. In addition histological sections were evaluated morphologically and morphometrically. Renal dry weight and protein content per kidney increased abruptly to maximal values a week after nephrectomy and remained stable thereafter. Repetitive pregnancies were associated with progressive increments in both parameters. The effects of unilateral nephrectomy and repetitive pregnancy were additive. Following unilateral nephrectomy or pregnancy the number of glomeruli per field, as well as fractional glomerular area, increased more rapidly than in sham-operated virgin controls. However, the maximal glomerular number or fractional area attained did not differ from control values. We conclude that (a) in 8-week-old mice pregnancy is associated with renal cell hypertrophy; (b) repetitive pregnancies in these animals produce progressive augmentation in both renal dry weight and protein content; (c) the effects of repetitive pregnancy and unilateral nephrectomy on renal cell hypertrophy are additive; (d) this would indicate that neither manoeuvre exhausts maximal renal capacity for cell hypertrophy, and would suggest some possibilities for the underlying mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

The Nurmi concept for diminishing salmonella infection of poultry by application of gastrointestinal microflora from adult birds into newly hatched chicks was tested in a field study in which 8 million broilers were involved. Half of the 284 flocks was treated in the hatchery by spray application of an undefined microflora propagated in SPF chicks. A significant reduction in salmonella-contaminated flocks, as well as in the number of infected broilers in these flocks was demonstrated. No undesirable side effects were detected. It was concluded that hygienic improvements in transportation and slaughtering of broilers are needed in order to maintain the reduced salmonella contamination rate.

ABSTRACT

1. Twenty 7-week female mice underwent right nephrectomy and twenty others were sham operated. A week later all animals were made pregnant. Pregnancy was repeated five more times consecutively and various renal parameters were assessed in the pups. 2. Fractional fresh kidney weight (relative to body weight) was significantly increased in the pups of nephrectomized mothers while percentage renal water and protein content expressed as mg/g kidney weight were not statistically different in the two groups of pups. Thus dry kidney weight and amount of protein per kidney were increased in the experimental group. This was true for the newborns of all six pregnancies. 3. Renal morphometric studies performed in newborns of first pregnancies showed that the mean number of glomeruli per microscopic field, mean fractional cumulative glomerular area (relative to microscopic field area) and the mean number of cells per glomerulus were significantly greater in the experimental group. Mean glomerular radius was not statistically different in the two groups. 4. The results indicate that: (1) the renotrophic factor(s) crosses the placenta in mice; (2) its activity in maternal circulation following uninephrectomy is sustained for a relatively long period; and (3) fetal response to enhanced maternal renotrophin stimulation consists of increased renal dry weight and renal protein, formation of super-physiological numbers of glomeruli and cellular hyperplasia of the glomeruli.

ABSTRACT

Although no microbiological activity was found in blood plasma during treatment of broilers through the drinking water with spectinomycin or lincomycin-spectinomycin, these drugs proved highly effective in treating experimentally induced colibacillosis. This efficacy may be produced by a metabolite or a degradation product of spectinomycin that reaches the infection site in the respiratory tract and interferes with adherence of bacteria.

ABSTRACT

Malabsorption syndrome, defined by five criteria, could not be reproduced by oral inoculation of newly hatched chicks with six reoviruses isolated from six different cases. Passage in birds of four reoviruses with intestinal homogenates did not result in increased pathogenicity. In contrast, inoculation of complete infectious intestinal homogenate caused great weight loss, long lasting excretion of yellow-orange mucoid and wet faeces, increased plasma alkaline phosphatase activity, decreased carotene concentration and bone abnormalities. Malabsorption syndrome could not be reproduced with infectious intestinal homogenate comprising only reovirus and possibly other non-enveloped viruses after treatment with methanol or chloroform. Infectious homogenate made reovirus-free by incubation with anti-serum was as pathogenic as homogenate that had been treated the same way with broth and that still contained viable reovirus. While infectious homogenate was almost apathogenic for 3-day-old chicks, its pathogenicity for birds of this age was greatly enhanced by a pre-infection with reovirus immediately after hatching. Reovirus therefore may act as a trigger in the malabsorption syndrome. This enhancing effect, however, was not specific for reovirus; it was also achieved with an adenovirus. Vaccination of two groups of breeders with two different inactivated reovirus vaccines, resulted in effective transfer of antibody to the offspring, but did not protect the offspring against malabsorption syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Treatment of experimentally induced colibacillosis in broilers with doxycycline hyclate through the drinking water was just effective at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight (1000 ppm). The achieved therapeutic effects were similar to those of tetracycline at the same dose and of flumequine at a dose of 19 mg/kg body weight (100 ppm).

ABSTRACT

In contrast with the recommended dose of 2,000 ppm sulphadimidine sodium in the drinking water for treatment of broilers against colibacillosis, it appeared that under experimental conditions, treatment at 500 ppm (60 mg/kg body weight) gave the best therapeutic effects. At higher concentrations, drinking water consumption and body weight gain were reduced significantly. During treatment high blood plasma-concentrations were measured.

ABSTRACT

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were generated against the sodium channels in the intact membrane of the eel electroplax. These antibodies bind to nodes of Ranvier, as indicated by immunofluorescence. When externally applied to rat nerve fibers one of these mAbs blocks impulse conduction. In voltage-clamp experiments, this mAb was found to attenuate sodium current amplitude without affecting the time course. The dose-response curve was very steep and had an ED50 of 133 nM. About half of the mAb effect was shown to be due to a shift, in the hyperpolarizing direction, of the steady-state sodium inactivation versus membrane potential curve. The remaining effect was voltage- and time-independent. This mAb had no effect on the potassium or leakage currents. The results indicate that on the external surface of the sodium channel, there are a number of antigenically similar determinants, which are functionally linked to specific elements of the sodium conductance system. These functionally related determinants were preserved through the course of evolution.
