ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Incarcerated individuals exhibit higher suicide rates compared to the general population. Investigating risk factors aids in developing effective public policies and interventions. The goal of this study was to assess and analyze factors predicting both suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts in a population of male incarcerated individuals who engage in the use of multiple psychoactive substances. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted. A total of 174 male individuals deprived of liberty participated in the study, all of whom were serving a closed regime sentence during the data collection steps. Participants were assessed with the following instruments: the "Addiction Severity Index" (ASI-6) and the "Barratt Impulsiveness Scale" (BIS-11). RESULTS: Amongst our sample, prevalences of 36.7% in suicidal ideation and of 16.0% in suicide attempts were found. Impulsivity (OR = 1.098, 95% CI: 1.008 - 1.197), social support (OR = 0.281, 95% CI: 0.085 - 0.925), witnessing someone being killed or beaten (OR = 5.173, 95% CI: 2.143 - 12.486), cigarette use (OR = 3.309, 95% CI: 1.063 - 10.293), and cocaine use (OR = 2.678, 95% CI: 1.040 - 6.897) were also found to be associated with suicidal ideation. No significant associations were found between drug use and suicide attempts. CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of suicidal behaviors was observed in the study's sample, with findings demonstrating that impulsivity moderately differentiates the groups 'with' and 'without' suicidal ideation. Traumatic life events and substance use were also associated with suicide ideation, while social support was established as a protective factor for it.

ABSTRACT

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and disease is a condition usually described in immunocompromised patients, but among them, those with connective tissue diseases are poorly represented. Here we present the clinical, laboratory characteristics, management and outcomes of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients who presented with a CMV infection/disease to a high complexity hospital in southwestern Colombia between 2011 and 2020. 16 SLE patients were found to have a CMV infection. SLE was predominantly characterized by renal involvement (10 patients; 62.50%), and 14 patients (87.5%) were receiving steroids previous to the CMV infection. The entire sample required hospital admission, mainly related to acute kidney injury, and nine patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Gastrointestinal organ damage was the most common CMV disease manifestation. All patients received ganciclovir, five of them (31.25%) suffered from septic shock, and seven (43.75%) died. Age ≥38 years and the presence of septic shock at admission were correlated to the mortality outcome. To our knowledge, this is the first publication evaluating SLE patients with CMV infection/disease in a Colombian population.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the bleaching efficacy (BE) and tooth sensitivity (TS) of in-office bleaching using different application tips. METHODS: Forty-eight participants were selected (split-mouth), one to receive bleaching with an attached brush tip and one with a conventional tip. The procedure was performed with Whiteness Automixx Plus 35%. The BE was evaluated at the beginning, weekly, one and 12 months post-bleaching with a Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer (ΔE*ab, ΔE00, and WID) and with Vita classical A1-D4 and Vita Bleachedguide shade guides units (ΔSGU). Absolute risk and intensity of TS were recorded using the Visual Analogue Scale. The equivalence of BE was analyzed using the two one-sided t-tests for paired samples. The absolute risk of TS was evaluated using the McNemar test, and the TS intensity was measured with the paired t test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The equivalence of BE was observed for both groups in all color evaluations (p > 0.05). A lower absolute risk and intensity of TS were observed for the attached brush tip when compared with the conventional tip (p < 0.003 and p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Using an attached brush tip showed the same BE as a conventional tip. However, for the attached brush tip, there was a reduction in TS. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The applicator-attached brush tip is recommended for in-office dental bleaching, because of the possible reduction in risk and intensity of TS.

ABSTRACT

This work reports on new software for automatic conformer energy benchmarking calculations for flexible molecules. The software workflow consists of four parts: conformational search, preoptimization, optimization, and frequency calculations at a higher level and last calculations using several theoretical levels. The software was written to be user-friendly and versatile to be used by nonexperts in computational chemistry. Any theoretical levels available in either Gaussian 16 or ORCA 5 may be applied in the benchmarking study. The workflow will automatically run conformational search calculations and deal with conformers that converge to the same minimum and those that show a negative frequency. At the end of the workflow, the user will have the mean absolute deviations and the most accurate method/DFT functional and basis set in comparison to the benchmark to be applied for the molecular system of interest. Case examples are given at the end of the paper that may help users to get insight into the software's main features.

ABSTRACT

The heated environment shifts the sympatho-vagal balance toward sympathetic predominance and vagal withdrawal. Women's heart is more reliant on vagal autonomic control, while men's heart is more dependent on sympathetic control. However, sex differences in cardiovascular autonomic responses to heat stress remain unknown. We aimed to investigate the cardiovascular autonomic regulation under heat stress between sexes. Thirty-two young participants (27 ± 4 years old; 16 women) were enrolled in a single visit, resting for 30min at baseline (thermal reference condition TC; ∼24°C) and 30min under a heated environment (HOT; ∼38°C). Blood pressure (BP), skin temperature, electrocardiogram, and respiratory oscillations were continuously recorded. The heart rate variability (HRV) was assessed by spectral analysis (low-frequency [LFnu; sympathetic and vagal] and high-frequency [HFnu; vagal]), and symbolic analysis (0 V% [sympathetic] and 2UV%, and 2LV% [vagal]). The spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) was calculated by the gain between BP and R-R within the LF band (αLF). The estimated maximal aerobic capacity and body surface area were employed as covariates in sex comparisons. The effects of HOT were the following: 1) Women have a greater cardiac vagal withdrawal to heat stress compared to men; 2) Sex differences on cardiac autonomic response to heat stress exist after controlling for the effect of estimated physical fitness and body surface area. Therefore, heat stress provokes a higher vagal withdrawal to the heart in women compared to men. It could be attributed to sex per se since significant differences between men and women were not modified after covariate analysis.

ABSTRACT

Whisky adulteration is a prevalent practice driven by the high cost of these beverages. Counterfeiters commonly dilute whisky with less expensive alcoholic beverages, water, food additives, drugs or pharmaceuticals. Paracetamol (PAR), an analgesic drug that mitigates hangovers and headaches, is commonly used to adulterate whisky. Currently, the primary method for quantifying PAR levels is high-performance liquid chromatography, but this technique is both time consuming and usually generates more residues. In this context, the utilization of miniaturized and portable analytical devices becomes imperative for conducting point-of-care/need analyses. These devices offer several advantages, including portability, user-friendliness, low cost, and minimal material wastage. This study proposes the selective distance-based PAR quantification on whisky samples using a paper-based microfluidic analytical device (µPAD). Colorimetric detection on paper-based platforms offers great benefits such as affordability, portability, and the ability to detect PAR without complicated instrumentation. The optimal detection conditions were achieved by introducing 5 µL of a mixture containing 7.5 mmol L-1 of Fe(III) and K3[Fe(CN)6] into the detection zone, along with 12 µL of whisky samples into the sample zone. The method exhibited linear behavior within the concentration range from 15 to 120 mg L-1, with a determination coefficient of 0.998. PAR was quantified in adulterated samples. The results obtained with the paper-based devices were compared with a referenced method, and no significant differences were observed at a confidence level of 95%. The µPAD allowed to determine ca. 1 drop of pharmaceutical medicine PAR of 200 mg mL-1 in 1 L of solution, demonstrating excellent sensitivity. This method offers cost-effective and rapid analysis, reducing the consumption of samples, reagents, and wastes. Consequently, it could be considered a viable and portable alternative for analyzing beverages at criminal scenes, customs, and police operations, thereby enhancing the field of forensics.

In apple processing, waste material known as apple pomace amounts to 45% of production volumes. When this residue is stored in open-air for its stabilization and potential uses, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are produced, resulting in environmental and odor pollution, and must be managed to avoid their impact. This work aims to study the emission of VOCs utilizing TD-GC/MS and its relationship with changes in physico-chemical (moisture, pH, proteins, among others) and biological (bacteria and fungi using Illumina MiSeq) parameters under three environmental conditions: open-air (outdoors), under-roof (indoors) and oxygen-free. The 8-month study results showed a gradual increase in odorous VOCs and microbial diversity, a product of chemical and biological transformation processes in the samples. A 30% increase in odorant compounds responsible for the unpleasant smell was observed, especially esters, aldehydes and hydrocarbons in samples stored in oxygen-free and Open-air conditions. Increases in VOCs over time were associated with changes in physico-chemical and biological parameters, as well as fluctuations in environmental variables (temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation). The results of this research allow establishing a relationship between storage conditions and the production of VOCs. In addition, recommendations for waste storage time are provided for the most common uses of apple pomace based on the physico-chemical parameters observed, in order to avoid the generation of odorous compounds. Of all storage methods analyzed, under-roof is the most adequate in practice. This study's findings are pertinent for managing agribusiness waste and its potential environmental pollution.

Background: Changes in brain connectivity occur in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), even in patients under disease-modifying therapies. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to asses patients treated with disease-modifying therapies, such as natalizumab, can elucidate the mechanisms involved in clinical deterioration in MS. Objectives: To evaluate differences in resting-state functional connectivity among MS patients treated with natalizumab, MS patients not treated with natalizumab, and controls. Design: Single-center retrospective cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-three MS patients being treated with natalizumab were retrospectively compared with 23 MS patients who were naïve for natalizumab, and were using first-line medications (interferon-ß and/or glatiramer acetate), and 17 gender- and age-matched control subjects. The MS patient groups were also matched for time since diagnosis and hyperintense lesion volume on FLAIR. All participants underwent brain MRI using a 3 Tesla scanner. Independent component analysis and dual regression were used to identify resting-state functional connectivity using the FMRIB Software Library. Results: In comparison to controls, the MS patients treated with natalizumab presented decreased connectivity in the left orbitofrontal cortex, in the anterior cingulate and orbitofrontal cortex network. The patients not treated with natalizumab presented increased connectivity in the secondary visual, sensorimotor, and ventral attention networks in comparison to controls.Compared to patients treated with natalizumab, the patients not using natalizumab presented increased connectivity in the left Heschl's gyrus and in the right superior frontal gyrus in the ventral attention network. Conclusion: Differences in brain connectivity between MS patients not treated with natalizumab, healthy controls, and patients treated with natalizumab may be secondary to suboptimal neuronal compensation due to prior less efficient treatments, or due to a compensation in response to maladaptive plasticity.

Introduction: The search for the "neural code" has been a fundamental quest in neuroscience, concerned with the way neurons and neuronal systems process and transmit information. However, the term "code" has been mostly used as a metaphor, seldom acknowledging the formal definitions introduced by information theory, and the contributions of linguistics and semiotics not at all. The heuristic potential of the latter was suggested by structuralism, which turned the methods and findings of linguistics to other fields of knowledge. For the study of complex communication systems, such as human language and music, the necessity of an approach that considers multilayered, nested, structured organization of symbols becomes evident. We work under the hypothesis that the neural code might be as complex as these human-made codes. To test this, we propose a bottom-up approach, constructing a symbolic logic in order to translate neuronal signals into music scores. Methods: We recorded single cells' activity from the rat's globus pallidus pars interna under conditions of full alertness, blindfoldedness and environmental silence. We analyzed the signals with statistical, spectral, and complex methods, including Fast Fourier Transform, Hurst exponent and recurrence plot analysis. Results: The results indicated complex behavior and recurrence graphs consistent with fractality, and a Hurst exponent >0.5, evidencing temporal persistence. On the whole, these features point toward a complex behavior of the time series analyzed, also present in classical music, which upholds the hypothesis of structural similarities between music and neuronal activity. Furthermore, through our experiment we performed a comparison between music and raw neuronal activity. Our results point to the same conclusion, showing the structures of music and neuronal activity to be homologous. The scores were not only spontaneously tonal, but they exhibited structure and features normally present in human-made musical creations. Discussion: The hypothesis of a structural homology between the neural code and the code of music holds, suggesting that some of the insights introduced by linguistic and semiotic theory might be a useful methodological resource to go beyond the limits set by metaphoric notions of "code."

ABSTRACT

Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a loss of dendritic spines in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Multiple subclinical and clinical studies have evidenced the ability of antipsychotics to improve neuroplasticity. In this study, it was evaluated the effect of the atypical antipsychotic aripiprazole (ARI) on the behavioral and mPFC neuronal disturbances of rats with neonatal ventral hippocampus lesion (nVHL), which is a heuristic developmental model relevant to the study of schizophrenia. ARI attenuated open field hyperlocomotion in the rats with nVHL. Also, ARI ameliorated structural neuroplasticity disturbances of the mPFC layer 3 pyramidal cells, but not in the layer 5 neurons. These effects can be associated with the ARI capability of increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Moreover, in the animals with nVHL, ARI attenuated the immunoreactivity for some oxidative stress-related molecules such as the nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS-2), 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT), and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), as well as the reactive astrogliosis in the mPFC. These results contribute to current knowledge about the neurotrophic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of antipsychotics which may be contributing to their clinical effects and envision promising therapeutic targets for the treatment of schizophrenia.

Prolonged rowing exercise sessions are often prescribed considering competitive training schedules, and under hostile environments (e.g., heated ambient). The study aimed to investigate the effect of heat stress (HS) on physical performance, Lactate concentration ([Lac]), and cardiorespiratory responses during prolonged exercise sessions in competitive rowers. Twelve rowers performed preliminary exercise tests (2-km test and five-step incremental lactate test) to assess the target workload intensity corresponding to a 2.5 mmol.L-1 of [Lac]. On two separate days, participants were enrolled in two exercise sessions of 12 km in a rowing machine under HS (∼30 °C) and thermal comfort (TC 22 °C) conditions. Heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), oxygen uptake (VO2), [Lac], and the rating of perceptual exertion (RPE) were obtained. From baseline, HS increased the maximum temperature of the face compared to TC. Workload and VO2 reduced while RPE increased at 9- and 12-km of rowing exercise under HS compared to TC. From baseline to the last stage of exercise, HS shifted SV downwards and HR upwards compared to TC. Consequently, CO did not change between thermal conditions (TC vs. HS). Therefore, HS provokes a cardiovascular drift during prolonged rowing in comparison to TC. The last stages of prolonged rowing sessions under HS seem to be critical to physical performance and relative perceptual of effort in rowers.

Background: Bacterial meningitis (BM) is a public health challenge as it is associated with high lethality and neurological sequelae. Worldwide, most cases are registered in the African Meningitis Belt (AMB). The role of particular socioepidemiological features is essential for understanding disease dynamics and optimizing policy-making. Objective: To identify socioepidemiological macro-determinants that contribute to explaining the differences in BM incidence between AMB and the rest of Africa. Methods: Country-level ecologic study based on the cumulative incidence estimates of the Global Burden of Disease study and reports of the MenAfriNet Consortium. Data about relevant socioepidemiological features were extracted from international sources. Multivariate regression models were implemented to define variables associated with the classification of African countries within the AMB and the incidence of BM worldwide. Results: Cumulative incidences at the AMB sub-regions were 111.93 (west), 87.23 (central), 65.10 (east), and 42.47 (north) per 100,000 population. A pattern of common origin with continuous exposition and seasonality of cases was observed. Socio-epidemiological determinants contributing to differentiating the AMB from the rest of Africa were household occupancy (OR 3.17 CI 95% 1.09-9.22, p = 0.034) and malaria incidence (OR 1.01 CI 95% 1.00-1.02, p = 0.016). BM cumulative incidence worldwide was additionally associated with temperature and gross national income per capita. Conclusion: Socioeconomic and climate conditions are macro-determinants associated with BM cumulative incidence. Multilevel designs are required to confirm these findings.

ABSTRACT

The present work synthesized two new materials of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-OH and MWCNT-COOH) impregnated with magnetite (Fe3O4) using solution precipitation methodology. The resulting MWCNT-OH-Mag and MWCNT-COOH-Mag materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and electrical force microscopy. The characterization results indicate that the -OH functional groups in the MWCNT interact effectively with magnetite iron favoring impregnation and indicating the regular distribution of nanoparticles on the surface of the synthesized materials. The adsorption efficiency of the MWCNT-OH-Mag and MWCNT-COOH-Mag materials was tested using the pollutants 2,4-D and Atrazine. Over batch studies carried out under different pH ranges, it was found that the optimal condition for 2,4-D adsorption was at pH 2, while for Atrazine, it was found at pH 6. The rapid adsorption kinetics of 2,4-D and Atrazine reaches equilibrium within 30 min. The pseudo-first-order model described 2,4-D adsorption well. The General-order model described better atrazine adsorption. The magnetically doped adsorbent functionalized with -OH surface groups (MWCNT-OH-Mag) demonstrated superior adsorption performance and increased Fe-doped sites. The Sips model described the adsorption isotherms accurately. MWCNT-OH-Mag presented the greatest adsorption capacity at 51.4 and 47.7 mg g-1 for 2,4-D and Atrazine, respectively. Besides, electrostatic forces and complexation rule the molecular interactions between metals and pesticides. The leaching and regeneration tests of the synthesized materials indicate high stability in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, experiments with wastewater samples contaminated with the model pollutants indicate that the novel adsorbents are highly promising for enhancing water purification by adsorptive separation.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cognitive impairment is frequent among people living with Parkinson's disease: up to 40% of patients exhibit symptoms of mild cognitive impairment and 25% meet the criteria for dementia. Parkinson's Disease Cognitive Rating Scale (PD-CRS) is one of the recommended scales by the Movement Disorders Society Task Force for level 1 screening of dementia. However, its psychometric properties have not been studied in the Colombian population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients with Parkinson's disease diagnosed by a movement disorders neurologist. Patients were evaluated with PD-CRS and MoCA. Principal component analysis was conducted, and then confirmatory factor analysis was implemented through the maximum-likelihood method. Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach α. Convergent and divergent validity were also calculated and concurrent validity with the MoCA was assessed. Results: 62% were males. Their median age was 68 years (IQR 57-74) and the median disease duration was 4 years (IQR 2-9). 77% were classified in early stages (Hoehn and Yahr stage ≤ 2), while the MDS-UPDRS part III score was 25 (IQR 15.5-38). In the principal component factor analysis, the pattern matrix unveiled a mnesic and a non-mnesic domain. Confirmatory factor analysis showed similar explanatory capacity (λ ≥ 0.50) for items other than naming (λ = 0.34). Cronbach's α for the full 9-items instrument was 0.74. MoCA and PD-CRS total scores were correlated (ρ = 0.71, p = 0.000). Assuming a cut-off score of 62 points, there is an agreement of 89% with the definition of dementia by MoCA for Colombia (κ = 0.59; p = 0.000). Conclusion: PD-CRS has acceptable psychometric properties for the Colombian population and has significant correlation and agreement with a validated scale (MoCA).

Introduction: There is scarce information in Latin America about factors related to stroke patient outcomes in rural areas compared to urban ones. Objective: To evaluate functional outcomes of stroke code patients from rural and urban areas and their relationship with socioeconomic disparity. Methods: Prospective cohort study included patients of urban, semi-urban, and rural origin with stroke code from a high complexity hospital in southwestern Colombia between 2018 and 2019. Demographic, clinical data modified Rankin at discharge, and 3-month follow-up were analyzed. The poverty index, barriers to health access and availability of ambulances by the municipality was assessed at an ecological level. Results: Five hundred and fifty five stroke patients were registered, 21.2% from rural areas, 432 (77.98%) had an ischemic stroke. There were no significant differences in sociodemographic factors and medical background. Urban patients had lower reperfusion therapies rates (23.25%). Favorable mRS at discharge (<3) was higher in urban areas (63.03%) and mortality was superior in rural patients (13.56%). The ambulance rate in semi-urban and rural areas was as low as 0.03 per 100.000 inhabitants, the poverty index was 11.9% in urban areas vs. 23.3% in semi urban and rural areas. Conclusions: Rural patients treated in our center were more likely to present with severe strokes and unfavorable mRS at hospital discharge and 3-month follow-up compared to urban, despite having similar risk factors. There is an inverse relationship, which is not related to the poverty rate or the percentage of people with barriers to access to health. There is a need for further studies that assess barriers inherent in rural patients and establish a regional stroke network.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To improve the nutri-functional quality of chickpea flour by fermentation with selected lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to formulate functional legume-derived products. METHODS AND RESULTS: A Randomized Complete Block Design was carried out to assess the influence of experimental conditions (presence/absence of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CRL2211 and/or Weissella paramesenteroides CRL2182, temperature, time and dough yield) on LAB population, acidification, antinutritional factors and total phenolic contents (TPCs) of chickpea flour. Fermentation with both strains for 24 h at 37°C produced an increase in LAB (up to 8.9 log CFU/g), acidity (final pH 4.06), TPC (525.00 mg GAE/100 g) and tannin and trypsin inhibitor removal (28.80 mg GAE/100 g and 1.60 mg/g, respectively) higher than the spontaneously fermented doughs. RAPD and Rep-PCR analysis revealed that fermentation was dominated by L. plantarum CRL2211. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations were useful to explain LAB enzyme behaviour during fermentation highlighting the chemical affinity of LAB tannases and proteinases to gallocatechin and trypsin inhibitors. Compared with other processing methods, fermentation was better than soaking, germination and cooking for increasing the techno-functional properties of chickpea flour. Fermented doughs were applied to the manufacture of crackers that contained 81% more TPC and 64% more antioxidant activity than controls. CONCLUSIONS: Fermentation for 24 h at 37°C with selected autochthonous LAB was the best method for improving the quality of chickpea flour and derived crackers type cookies. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: Chickpea is suitable for the development of novel functional foods. Fermentation with selected LAB would improve the final product quality and bioactivity. The combination of experimental and simulation approaches can lead to a better understanding of the fermentation processes to enhance the properties of a food matrix.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe the evolution of seropositivity in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, through 10 consecutive surveys conducted between April 2020 and April 2021. METHODS: Nine cities covering all regions of the State were studied, 500 households in each city. One resident in each household was randomly selected for testing. In survey rounds 1-8 we used the rapid WONDFO SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Test (Wondfo Biotech Co., Guangzhou, China). In rounds 9-10, we used a direct ELISA test that identifies IgG to the viral S protein (S-UFRJ). In terms of social distancing, individuals were asked three questions, from which we generated an exposure score using principal components analysis. RESULTS: Antibody prevalence in early April 2020 was 0.07%, increasing to 10.0% in February 2021, and to 18.2% in April 2021. In round 10, self-reported whites showed the lowest seroprevalence (17.3%), while indigenous individuals presented the highest (44.4%). Seropositivity increased by 40% when comparing the most with the least exposed. CONCLUSIONS: The proportion of the population already infected by SARS-Cov-2 in the state is still far from any perspective of herd immunity and the infection affects population groups in very different levels.

ABSTRACT

The current study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that the high physical capacity of rowing athletes may not reverse the influence of age on cardiac autonomic control decline estimated by heart rate variability (HRV). Forty-four male subjects divided in four groups: 11 young athletes (YA; 18 ±1 year), 11 young non-athletes (YNA; 20 ±1 year), 11 middle age athletes (MAA; 43 ±6 years) and 11 middle age non-athletes (MNA; 44 ±8 years) participated in the study. Heart rate (HR) was recorded beat-by-beat for 10 minutes in supine (SUP) and 10 min in orthostatic (ORT) positions. HRV was analyzed in the frequency domain to obtain the spectral power in the high (HF) and low frequency (LF) bands, and the changes to ORT (%∆HRV) were calculated (ORT - SUP / SUP). During SUP, HF was lower in MNA and MA compared to YA and YNA, while LF was lower in MNA than YA. For %ΔHRV, %ΔHF was higher in YA than YNA, MA and MNA. The %ΔLF was not different among groups. In conclusion, aging seems to overcome the influence of physical fitness on neural regulation of the heart, as highlighted by the HRV response to active standing.
