ABSTRACT

Pulses are considered superfoods for the future world due to their properties, but they require processing to reduce antinutritional factors (ANFs) and increase bioactivity. In this study, bean flour (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was fermented under different conditions (addition of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CRL 2211 and/or Weissella paramesenteroides CRL 2182, temperature, time and dough yield) to improve its nutri-functional quality. Fermentation for 24 h at 37 °C with the mixed starter increased the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) population, acidity, polyphenol content (TPC) and ANF removal more than spontaneous fermentation. Statistical and rep-PCR analysis showed that fermentation was mainly conducted by Lp. plantarum CRL 2211. Metabolic modeling revealed potential cross-feeding between Lp. plantarum and W. paramesenteroides, while the molecular docking and dynamic simulation of LAB tannases and proteinases involved in ANF removal revealed their chemical affinity to gallocatechin and trypsin inhibitors. Fermentation was better than soaking, germination and cooking for enhancing bean flour properties: it increased the free amino acids content by 50% by releasing glutamine, glutamic acid, arginine, leucine and lysine and modified TPC by increasing gallic acid and decreasing caffeic, ferulic and vanillic acids and quercetin-3-glucoside. The combination of experimental and simulation data may help us to understand fermentation processes and to design products with desirable features.

ABSTRACT

Re-exposure to an antigen generates abundant antibody responses and drives the formation of secondary germinal centers (GCs). Recall GCs in mice consist almost entirely of naïve B cells, whereas recall antibodies derive overwhelmingly from memory B cells. Here, we examine this division between cellular and serum compartments. After repeated immunization with the same antigen, tetramer analyses of recall GCs revealed a marked decrease in the ability of B cells in these structures to bind the antigen. Boosting with viral variant proteins restored antigen binding in recall GCs, as did genetic ablation of primary-derived antibody-secreting cells through conditional deletion of Prdm1, demonstrating suppression of GC recall responses by pre-existing antibodies. In hapten-carrier experiments in which B and T cell specificities were uncoupled, memory T cell help allowed B cells with undetectable antigen binding to access GCs. Thus, antibody-mediated feedback steers recall GC B cells away from previously targeted epitopes and enables specific targeting of variant epitopes, with implications for vaccination protocols.

ABSTRACT

Tungsten (W) and W alloys are considered as primary candidates for plasma-facing components (PFCs) that must perform in severe environments in terms of temperature, neutron fluxes, plasma effects, and irradiation bombardment. These materials are notoriously difficult to produce using additive manufacturing (AM) methods due to issues inherent to these techniques. The progress on applying AM techniques to W-based PFC applications is reviewed and the technical issues in selected manufacturing methods are discussed in this review. Specifically, we focus on the recent development and applications of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), electron beam melting (EBM), and direct energy deposition (DED) in W materials due to their abilities to preserve the properties of W as potential PFCs. Additionally, the existing literature on irradiation effects on W and W alloys is surveyed, with possible solutions to those issues therein addressed. Finally, the gaps in possible future research on additively manufactured W are identified and outlined.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurological disorder primarily associated with mutations in the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. The syndrome is characterized by cognitive, social, and physical impairments, as well as sleep disorders and epilepsy. Notably, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system is a key feature of the syndrome. Although Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has been used to investigate autonomic nervous system dysfunction in RTT during wakefulness, there is still a significant lack of information regarding the same during sleep. Therefore, our aim was to investigate cardiovascular autonomic modulation during sleep in subjects with RTT compared to an age-matched healthy control group (HC). METHOD: A complete overnight polysomnographic (PSG) recording was obtained from 11 patients with Rett syndrome (all females, 10 ± 4 years old) and 11 HC (all females, 11 ± 4 years old; p = 0.48). Electrocardiogram and breathing data were extracted from PSG and divided into wake, non-REM, and REM sleep stages. Cardiac autonomic control was assessed using symbolic non-linear heart rate variability analysis. The symbolic analysis identified three patterns: 0 V% (sympathetic), 2UV%, and 2LV% (vagal). RESULTS: The 0 V% was higher in the RTT group than in the HC group during wake, non-REM, and REM stages (p < 0.01), while the 2LV and 2UV% were lower during wake and sleep stages (p < 0.01). However, the 0 V% increased similarly from the wake to the REM stage in both RTT and HC groups. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, the sympatho-vagal balance shifted towards sympathetic predominance and vagal withdrawal during wake and sleep in RTT, although cardiac autonomic dynamics were preserved during sleep.

ABSTRACT

Recent studies suggest that human-associated bacteria interact with host-produced steroids, but the mechanisms and physiological impact of such interactions remain unclear. Here, we show that the human gut bacteria Gordonibacter pamelaeae and Eggerthella lenta convert abundant biliary corticoids into progestins through 21-dehydroxylation, thereby transforming a class of immuno- and metabo-regulatory steroids into a class of sex hormones and neurosteroids. Using comparative genomics, homologous expression, and heterologous expression, we identify a bacterial gene cluster that performs 21-dehydroxylation. We also uncover an unexpected role for hydrogen gas production by gut commensals in promoting 21-dehydroxylation, suggesting that hydrogen modulates secondary metabolism in the gut. Levels of certain bacterial progestins, including allopregnanolone, better known as brexanolone, an FDA-approved drug for postpartum depression, are substantially increased in feces from pregnant humans. Thus, bacterial conversion of corticoids into progestins may affect host physiology, particularly in the context of pregnancy and women's health.

ABSTRACT

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and disease is a condition usually described in immunocompromised patients, but among them, those with connective tissue diseases are poorly represented. Here we present the clinical, laboratory characteristics, management and outcomes of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients who presented with a CMV infection/disease to a high complexity hospital in southwestern Colombia between 2011 and 2020. 16 SLE patients were found to have a CMV infection. SLE was predominantly characterized by renal involvement (10 patients; 62.50%), and 14 patients (87.5%) were receiving steroids previous to the CMV infection. The entire sample required hospital admission, mainly related to acute kidney injury, and nine patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Gastrointestinal organ damage was the most common CMV disease manifestation. All patients received ganciclovir, five of them (31.25%) suffered from septic shock, and seven (43.75%) died. Age ≥38 years and the presence of septic shock at admission were correlated to the mortality outcome. To our knowledge, this is the first publication evaluating SLE patients with CMV infection/disease in a Colombian population.

ABSTRACT

Visualizing event timelines for collaborative text writing is an important application for navigating and understanding such data, as time passes and the size and complexity of both text and timeline increase. They are often employed by applications such as code repositories and collaborative text editors. In this paper, we present a visualization tool to explore historical records of writing of legislative texts, which were discussed and voted on by an assembly of representatives. Our visualization focuses on event timelines from text documents that involve multiple people and different topics, allowing for observation of different proposed versions of said text or tracking data provenance of given text sections, while highlighting the connections between all elements involved. We also describe the process of designing such a tool alongside domain experts, with three steps of evaluation being conducted to verify the effectiveness of our design.

ABSTRACT

Research suggests that how people feel about aging can contribute to their later physical, cognitive, and mental health. In two studies, we examined younger (ages 18-30) and older adults' (ages 61-70) views about aging by asking them to rate the extent to which they would find it desirable to be various ages between 0 and 120. Participants also indicated both their ideal age (the age at which they would most like to be) and their subjective age (how old they generally feel). Consistent with the previous studies, younger adults' ideal age was significantly younger than older adults' ideal age. Younger adults' subjective age was slightly older than their chronological age, whereas older adults' subjective age was slightly younger than their chronological age. Of interest was the finding that, for older adults, their desirability ratings of various ages gradually decreased after age 35. In contrast, younger adults' desirability ratings decreased precipitously after age 20 and remained low from age 45 through age 90. Results suggest that older adults view middle to later life in a more nuanced manner than younger adults, who viewed middle and later life as being undesirable and homogenous. ABSTRACT

Nucleoside-modified mRNA vaccines elicit protective antibodies through their ability to promote T follicular helper (Tfh) cells. The lipid nanoparticle (LNP) component of mRNA vaccines possesses inherent adjuvant activity. However, to what extent the nucleoside-modified mRNA can be sensed and contribute to Tfh cell responses remains largely undefined. Herein, we deconvoluted the signals induced by LNP and mRNA that instruct dendritic cells (DCs) to promote Tfh cell differentiation. We demonstrated that the nucleoside-modified mRNA drives the production of type I interferons that act on DCs to induce their maturation and the induction of Th1-biased Tfh responses. Conversely, LNP favors the acquisition of a Tfh cell-inducing program in DCs, a stronger Th2 polarization in Tfh cells, and allows for rapid mRNA translation by DCs within the draining lymph node. Our work unravels distinct adjuvant features of mRNA and LNP necessary for the induction of Tfh cells, with implications for vaccine design.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience changes in behavior, personality, and cognition that can manifest even in the initial stages of the disease. Previous studies have suggested that mild behavioral impairment (MBI) should be considered an early marker of cognitive decline. However, the precise neurostructural underpinnings of MBI in early- to mid-stage PD remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to explore the changes in white matter microstructure linked to MBI and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in early- to mid-stage PD using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). METHODS: A total of 91 PD patients and 36 healthy participants were recruited and underwent anatomical MRI and dMRI, a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, and the completion of the Mild Behavioral Impairment-Checklist. Metrics of white matter integrity included tissue fractional anisotropy (FAt) and radial diffusivity (RDt), free water (FW), and fixel-based apparent fiber density (AFD). RESULTS: The connection between the left amygdala and the putamen was disrupted when comparing PD patients with MBI (PD-MBI) to PD-non-MBI, as evidenced by increased RDt (η2 = 0.09, P = 0.004) and both decreased AFD (η2 = 0.05, P = 0.048) and FAt (η2 = 0.12, P = 0.014). Compared to controls, PD patients with both MBI and MCI demonstrated increased FW for the connection between the left orbitofrontal gyrus (OrG) and the hippocampus (η2 = 0.22, P = 0.008), augmented RDt between the right OrG and the amygdala (η2 = 0.14, P = 0.008), and increased RDt (η2 = 0.25, P = 0.028) with decreased AFD (η2 = 0.10, P = 0.046) between the right OrG and the caudate nucleus. CONCLUSION: MBI is associated with abnormal microstructure of connections involving the orbitofrontal cortex, putamen, and amygdala. To our knowledge, this is the first assessment of the white matter microstructure in PD-MBI using dMRI. © 2024 The Authors. ABSTRACT

Importance: Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) can have long-term health consequences for the affected mother. The association between SMM and future maternal mental health conditions has not been well studied. Objective: To assess the association between SMM in the first recorded birth and the risk of hospitalization or emergency department (ED) visits for a mental health condition over a 13-year period. Design, Setting, and Participants: This population-based retrospective cohort study used data from postpartum individuals aged 18 to 55 years with a first hospital delivery between 2008 and 2021 in 11 provinces and territories in Canada, except Québec. Data were analyzed from January to June 2023. Exposure: SMM, defined as a composite of conditions, such as septic shock, severe preeclampsia or eclampsia, severe hemorrhage with intervention, or other complications, occurring after 20 weeks' gestation and up to 42 days after a first delivery. Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcome was a hospitalization or ED visit for a mental health condition, including mood and anxiety disorders, substance use, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorder, or suicidality or self-harm event, arising at least 43 days after the first birth hospitalization. Cox regression models generated hazard ratios with 95% CIs, adjusted for baseline maternal comorbidities, maternal age at delivery, income quintile, type of residence, hospital type, and delivery year. Results: Of 2 026 594 individuals with a first hospital delivery, 1 579 392 individuals (mean [SD] age, 30.0 [5.4] years) had complete ED and hospital records and were included in analyses; among these, 35 825 individuals (2.3%) had SMM. Compared with individuals without SMM, those with SMM were older (mean [SD] age, 29.9 [5.4] years vs 30.7 [6.0] years), were more likely to deliver in a teaching tertiary care hospital (40.8% vs 51.1%), and to have preexisting conditions (eg, ≥2 conditions: 1.2% vs 5.3%), gestational diabetes (8.2% vs 11.7%), stillbirth (0.5% vs 1.6%), preterm birth (7.7% vs 25.0%), or cesarean delivery (31.0% vs 54.3%). After a median (IQR) duration of 2.6 (1.3-6.4) years, 1287 (96.1 per 10 000) individuals with SMM had a mental health hospitalization or ED visit, compared with 41 779 (73.2 per 10 000) individuals without SMM (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.26 [95% CI, 1.19-1.34]). Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study of postpartum individuals with and without SMM in pregnancy and delivery, there was an increased risk of mental health hospitalizations or ED visits up to 13 years after a delivery complicated by SMM. Enhanced surveillance and provision of postpartum mental health resources may be especially important after SMM.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Most studies of disparities in birth and postnatal outcomes by parental birthplace combine all immigrants into a single group. We sought to evaluate heterogeneity among immigrants in Canada by comparing birth and postnatal outcomes across different immigration categories. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective study using Statistics Canada data on live births and stillbirths (1993-2017) and infant deaths (1993-2018), linked to parental immigration data (1960-2017). We classified birthing parents as born in Canada, economic-class immigrants, family-class immigrants, or refugees, and evaluated differences in preterm births, small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) births, stillbirths, and infant deaths among singleton births by group. RESULTS: Among 7 980 650 births, 1 715 050 (21.5%) were to immigrants, including 632 760 (36.9%) in the economic class, 853 540 (49.8%) in the family class, and 228 740 (13.4%) refugees. Compared with infants of Canadian-born birthing parents, infants of each of the 3 immigrant groups had higher risk of preterm birth, SGA birth, and stillbirth, but lower risk of LGA birth and neonatal death. Compared with infants of economic-class immigrants, infants of refugees had higher risk of early preterm birth (0.9% v. 0.8%, adjusted risk ratio [RR] 1.08, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.15) and LGA birth (9.2% v. 7.5%, adjusted RR 1.12, 95% CI 1.10-1.15), but lower risk of SGA birth (10.2% v. 11.0%, adjusted RR 0.92, 95% CI 0.90-0.94), while infants of family-class immigrants had higher risk of SGA birth (12.2% v. 11.0%, adjusted RR 1.01, 95% CI 1.00-1.02). Risk of stillbirth, neonatal death, and overall infant death did not differ significantly among immigrant groups. INTERPRETATION: Heterogeneity exists in outcomes of infants born to immigrants to Canada across immigration categories. These results highlight the importance of disaggregating immigrant populations in studies of health disparities.

ABSTRACT

Understanding driving forces for dissipative, i.e., out of equilibrium, assembly of nanoparticles from colloidal solution at liquid-solid interfaces provides the ability to design external cues for reconfigurable device response. Here electrohydrodynamic flow (EHD) at an electrode-liquid interface is investigated as a dissipative driving force for tuning optical response. EHD results from an oscillatory electric field in a liquid cell between two electrodes and drives assembly of gold nanoparticles (NP) into two-dimensional clusters on electrode surfaces. Clusters are chemically crosslinked during assembly to freeze assemblies for electron microscopy characterization in order to understand how to 'nucleate' cluster formation. Electron microscopy images show deposition with a potential having an amplitude of 5 V and frequency of 100 Hz produces surfaces with isolated NP, which can seed EHD flow. A second deposition step at 5 V and 500 Hz produces a high density of quadramers on surfaces. When exciting near the local surface plasmon resonance of the Au NP clusters formed during assembly, Au NPs serve as in situ nanoantenna reporters of assembly and disassembly. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements of Au NP capped with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid show order of magnitude signal enhancements occur during cluster formation in the presence of an oscillatory field, which occurs on a time scale of seconds. Confocal fluorescence spectroscopy is used to monitor the dissipative assembly of Au NP over multiple cycles. Results provide insight on how electrical stimuli and seeding local perturbations affects formation of NP clusters and resultant optical response provides insight on how to tune response of optically active surfaces.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the bleaching efficacy (BE) and tooth sensitivity (TS) of in-office bleaching using different application tips. METHODS: Forty-eight participants were selected (split-mouth), one to receive bleaching with an attached brush tip and one with a conventional tip. The procedure was performed with Whiteness Automixx Plus 35%. The BE was evaluated at the beginning, weekly, one and 12 months post-bleaching with a Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer (ΔE*ab, ΔE00, and WID) and with Vita classical A1-D4 and Vita Bleachedguide shade guides units (ΔSGU). Absolute risk and intensity of TS were recorded using the Visual Analogue Scale. The equivalence of BE was analyzed using the two one-sided t-tests for paired samples. The absolute risk of TS was evaluated using the McNemar test, and the TS intensity was measured with the paired t test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The equivalence of BE was observed for both groups in all color evaluations (p > 0.05). A lower absolute risk and intensity of TS were observed for the attached brush tip when compared with the conventional tip (p < 0.003 and p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Using an attached brush tip showed the same BE as a conventional tip. However, for the attached brush tip, there was a reduction in TS. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The applicator-attached brush tip is recommended for in-office dental bleaching, because of the possible reduction in risk and intensity of TS.

ABSTRACT

This work reports on new software for automatic conformer energy benchmarking calculations for flexible molecules. The software workflow consists of four parts: conformational search, preoptimization, optimization, and frequency calculations at a higher level and last calculations using several theoretical levels. The software was written to be user-friendly and versatile to be used by nonexperts in computational chemistry. Any theoretical levels available in either Gaussian 16 or ORCA 5 may be applied in the benchmarking study. The workflow will automatically run conformational search calculations and deal with conformers that converge to the same minimum and those that show a negative frequency. At the end of the workflow, the user will have the mean absolute deviations and the most accurate method/DFT functional and basis set in comparison to the benchmark to be applied for the molecular system of interest. Case examples are given at the end of the paper that may help users to get insight into the software's main features.

Immune cells rely on transient physical interactions with other immune and non-immune populations to regulate their function1. To study these 'kiss-and-run' interactions directly in vivo, we previously developed LIPSTIC (labelling immune partnerships by SorTagging intercellular contacts)2, an approach that uses enzymatic transfer of a labelled substrate between the molecular partners CD40L and CD40 to label interacting cells. Reliance on this pathway limited the use of LIPSTIC to measuring interactions between CD4+ T helper cells and antigen-presenting cells, however. Here we report the development of a universal version of LIPSTIC (uLIPSTIC), which can record physical interactions both among immune cells and between immune and non-immune populations irrespective of the receptors and ligands involved. We show that uLIPSTIC can be used, among other things, to monitor the priming of CD8+ T cells by dendritic cells, reveal the steady-state cellular partners of regulatory T cells and identify germinal centre-resident T follicular helper cells on the basis of their ability to interact cognately with germinal centre B cells. By coupling uLIPSTIC with single-cell transcriptomics, we build a catalogue of the immune populations that physically interact with intestinal epithelial cells at the steady state and profile the evolution of the interactome of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus-specific CD8+ T cells in multiple organs following systemic infection. Thus, uLIPSTIC provides a broadly useful technology for measuring and understanding cell-cell interactions across multiple biological systems.

ABSTRACT

Immunization with mosaic-8b [60-mer nanoparticles presenting 8 SARS-like betacoronavirus (sarbecovirus) receptor-binding domains (RBDs)] elicits more broadly cross-reactive antibodies than homotypic SARS-CoV-2 RBD-only nanoparticles and protects against sarbecoviruses. To investigate original antigenic sin (OAS) effects on mosaic-8b efficacy, we evaluated effects of prior COVID-19 vaccinations in non-human primates and mice on anti-sarbecovirus responses elicited by mosaic-8b, admix-8b (8 homotypics), or homotypic SARS-CoV-2 immunizations, finding greatest cross-reactivity for mosaic-8b. As demonstrated by molecular fate-mapping in which antibodies from specific cohorts of B cells are differentially detected, B cells primed by WA1 spike mRNA-LNP dominated antibody responses after RBD-nanoparticle boosting. While mosaic-8b- and homotypic-nanoparticles boosted cross-reactive antibodies, de novo antibodies were predominantly induced by mosaic-8b, and these were specific for variant RBDs with increased identity to RBDs on mosaic-8b. These results inform OAS mechanisms and support using mosaic-8b to protect COVID-19 vaccinated/infected humans against as-yet-unknown SARS-CoV-2 variants and animal sarbecoviruses with human spillover potential.

ABSTRACT

Recent studies have demonstrated that metabolites produced by commensal bacteria causally influence health and disease. The sulfated metabolome is one class of molecules that has recently come to the forefront due to efforts to understand the role of these metabolites in host-microbiome interactions. Sulfated compounds have canonically been classified as waste products; however, studies have revealed a variety of physiological roles for these metabolites, including effects on host metabolism, immune response and neurological function. Moreover, recent research has revealed that commensal bacteria either chemically modify or synthesize a variety of sulfated compounds. In this Review, we explore how host-microbiome collaborative metabolism transforms the sulfated metabolome. We describe bacterial and mammalian enzymes that sulfonate and desulfate biologically relevant carbohydrates, amino acid derivatives and cholesterol-derived metabolites. We then discuss outstanding questions and future directions in the field, including potential roles of sulfated metabolites in disease detection, prevention and treatment. We hope that this Review inspires future research into sulfated compounds and their effects on physiology.

In monogamous species, prosocial behaviors directed toward partners are dramatically different from those directed toward unknown individuals and potential threats. Dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens has a well-established role in social reward and motivation, but how this mechanism may be engaged to drive the highly divergent social behaviors directed at a partner or unfamiliar conspecific remains unknown. Using monogamous prairie voles, we first employed receptor pharmacology in partner preference and social operant tasks to show that dopamine is critical for the appetitive drive for social interaction but not for low-effort, unconditioned consummatory behaviors. We then leveraged the subsecond temporal resolution of the fluorescent biosensor, GRABDA, to ask whether differential dopamine release might distinguish between partner and novel social access and interaction. We found that partner seeking, anticipation, and interaction resulted in more accumbal dopamine release than the same events directed toward a novel vole. Further, partner-associated dopamine release decreased after prolonged partner separation. Our results are consistent with a model in which dopamine signaling plays a prominent role in the appetitive aspects of social interactions. Within this framework, differences in partner- and novel-associated dopamine release reflect the selective nature of pair bonds and may drive the partner- and novel-directed social behaviors that reinforce and cement bonds over time. This provides a potential mechanism by which highly conserved reward systems can enable selective, species-appropriate social behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a rapidly growing neurodegenerative disorder, but up-to-date epidemiological data are lacking in Latin America. We sought to estimate the prevalence and incidence of PD and parkinsonism in Latin America. METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Scientific Electronic Library Online, and Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde or the Latin American and Caribbean Health Science Literature databases for epidemiological studies reporting the prevalence or incidence of PD or parkinsonism in Latin America from their inception to 2022. Quality of studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist. Data were pooled via random-effects meta-analysis and analyzed by data source (cohort studies or administrative databases), sex, and age group. Significant differences between groups were determined by meta-regression. RESULTS: Eighteen studies from 13 Latin American countries were included in the review. Meta-analyses of 17 studies (nearly 4 million participants) found a prevalence of 472 (95% CI, 271-820) per 100,000 and three studies an incidence of 31 (95% CI, 23-40) per 100,000 person-years for PD; and seven studies found a prevalence of 4300 (95% CI, 1863-9613) per 100,000 for parkinsonism. The prevalence of PD differed by data source (cohort studies, 733 [95% CI, 427-1255] vs. administrative databases. 114 [95% CI, 63-209] per 100,000, P < 0.01), age group (P < 0.01), but not sex (P = 0.73). PD prevalence in ≥60 years also differed significantly by data source (cohort studies. 1229 [95% CI, 741-2032] vs. administrative databases, 593 [95% CI, 480-733] per 100,000, P < 0.01). Similar patterns were observed for parkinsonism. CONCLUSIONS: The overall prevalence and incidence of PD in Latin America were estimated. PD prevalence differed significantly by the data source and age, but not sex. © 2023 The Authors.
