ABSTRACT

Planet formation occurs around a wide range of stellar masses and stellar system architectures1. An improved understanding of the formation process can be achieved by studying it across the full parameter space, particularly towards the extremes. Earlier studies of planets in close-in orbits around high-mass stars have revealed an increase in giant planet frequency with increasing stellar mass2 until a turnover point at 1.9 solar masses (M⊙), above which the frequency rapidly decreases3. This could potentially imply that planet formation is impeded around more massive stars, and that giant planets around stars exceeding 3 M⊙ may be rare or non-existent. However, the methods used to detect planets in small orbits are insensitive to planets in wide orbits. Here we demonstrate the existence of a planet at 560 times the Sun-Earth distance from the 6- to 10-M⊙ binary b Centauri through direct imaging. The planet-to-star mass ratio of 0.10-0.17% is similar to the Jupiter-Sun ratio, but the separation of the detected planet is about 100 times wider than that of Jupiter. Our results show that planets can reside in much more massive stellar systems than what would be expected from extrapolation of previous results. The planet is unlikely to have formed in situ through the conventional core accretion mechanism4, but might have formed elsewhere and arrived to its present location through dynamical interactions, or might have formed via gravitational instability.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In patients scheduled for colorectal surgery with an enhanced recovery program (ERP), feeding after returning home has been insufficiently investigated. The aim of this study was to measure energy and protein intake during the first month at home. METHODS: Seventy adult patients scheduled for colorectal surgery with ERP were included. Calorie and protein intakes were calculated, and body weight was measured preoperatively and 3, 7, 15, and 30 days after discharge home. Data are mean ± SD or median (interquartile range). RESULTS: Patient characteristics were age 60.0 ± 15.0 years, BMI = 25.9 ± 5.5 kg/m2 , and colon/rectum of 56/14. The duration of hospitalization was 3 (2-5) days. Calorie and protein intakes (21.9 [17.7-28.6] kilocalorie per kilogram of ideal body weight [kcal/kg IBW] and 0.81 [0.61-1.14] g/kg IBW) were significantly reduced (P < .01) by 15% on day 3, compared with preoperative values, and then increased gradually to reach preoperative values after 1 month. Almost 50% of the patients failed to reach the calorie intake target of 25 kcal/kg IBW, and almost no patient reached the protein intake target of 1.5 g/kg IBW 30 days after discharge home. Weight loss after 30 days at home remained at -1.8 ± 2.7 kg. CONCLUSIONS: Colorectal surgery, even in an ERP, is associated with energy and protein intake below the targets recommended for the rehabilitation phase and results in weight loss. Whether nutrition counseling and prolonged administration of protein-enriched oral supplements could accelerate weight gain needs to be explored.

ABSTRACT

This actigraphy study tests whether daily work stressors (time pressure, social stressors), work resources (control, social support) and mental detachment from work predict sleep quality, when controlling for demands and control after work. Fifty-two railway employees participated during five consecutive workdays by completing diary questionnaires and wearing an actigraphy device. The results confirmed that social stressors from supervisors predicted more frequent sleep fragmentation and lower sleep efficiency the following night. Higher levels of daily time control at work predicted shorter sleep-onset latency and better self-reported sleep quality. Leisure time control as a covariate turned out to be a private resource, followed by fewer awakenings the following night. Detachment after work related negatively to social stressors and time pressure at work but was unrelated to indicators of sleep quality; detachment after work neither mediated nor moderated the relationship between social stressors from supervisors and sleep quality. Work redesign to increase time control and reduce social stressors is recommended to preserve daily recovery in railway employees. Practitioner summary: Sleep is important to renew health- and safety-related resources in railway employees. This diary and actigraphy study shows that higher daily work stressors were antecedents of lower sleep quality the following night, while more time control was followed by better sleep quality. Work redesign could promote health and safety by improving sleep quality.
