ABSTRACT

15 patients after SAH from ruptured cerebral aneurysm were operated on within 72 hours after SAH. During the operation after clipping of aneurysm 10 mg of rtPA was administered into basal cisterns, Control group consisted of patients who did not receive rtPA. All the patients on the basis of CT scan were classified to III grade according to Fisher's classification. Control CT scan revealed dissolution of most clots in basal cisterns. In comparison with control group the patients who received rtPA rarely experienced radiological signs of vasospasm and delayed neurological deficit.

ABSTRACT

A new method for lower extremities length measurement in patients destined for surgical legalization is presented. It is based on a scan in investigational CT. Reference points are marked and the distance between them is calculated. The record is inclusive of synthetic, diminutive anterior-posterior image of the extremity along with the measurement. Since September 1990 to December 1993, 34 patient underwent this procedure. The advantage is sensitivity better than 1 mm, flexibility in choosing reference points, good reproducibility and little exposure to the radiation. The result is more precise and trustworthy then obtained with other radiological or clinical methods.

ABSTRACT

The results of our study of 50 patients show that levamisole is ineffective in the treatment of patients with ulcerative colitis. The data presented here support our hypothesis that the only effective drugs in ulcerative colitis act as suppressors of both acquired and natural immunity.

ABSTRACT

Forty five patients with acute ulcerative colitis were randomly allocated to receive (a) sulphasalazine, (b) levamisole, or (c) a combination of sulphasalazine and levamisole. Each group contained 15 patients. The ulcerative colitis activity index (UCAI), the remission and relapse rates were compared at three monthly intervals for one year. The UCAI fell in each group. Detailed analysis of all clinical and biochemical parameters used for estimation of UCAI showed that the only difference was in patients receiving combined therapy who continued to have a raised ESR and platelet count. Fewer patients, however, went into remission on levamisole therapy (46.6%) compared with the other two groups (66.6%). The cumulative relapse rate was 20% for those receiving levamisole compared with 6.6% in the other groups. Side effects were observed in 20% of patients receiving levamisole, 26% receiving sulphasalazine, and 40% in those having combined therapy. The results indicate that levamisole is unlikely to have a major role in the management of patients with ulcerative colitis.

ABSTRACT

A case is reported in which chronic subdural haematoma developed in association with a glioma of the left temporal lobe. The stroke-like onset of symptoms one month before surgical intervention, encapsulated liquid subdural haematoma, necrotic cerebral cortex over the tumour and easily bleeding peripheral parts of the tumour suggested a primary haemorrhage into the peripheral part of the tumour followed by penetration of the haematoma into the subdural space.

ABSTRACT

A 22-year-old patient is described in whom sudden deterioration developed on the 9th day after severe craniocerebral trauma. Left common carotid angiography demonstrated an aneurysm on a cortical branch of the middle cerebral artery and subdural haematoma. During the operation the aneurysm was excluded from the circulation.

ABSTRACT

Two hundred patients with low-back pain syndrome were studied. The results of neurological examination were compared with those of radiculography in these cases. It was found that although herniation of the nucleus pulposus at the L4-5 level is twice as frequent as at the L5-S1 level, radicular signs were demonstrated in 69% caused by injury to the S1 root and in 57% by injury to the L5 root. In surgically treated cases agreement between the result of surgical exploration and the result of radiculography was demonstrated in 99.7% of cases.
