ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Computational modeling involves the use of computer simulations and models to study and understand real-world phenomena. Its application is particularly relevant in the study of potential interactions between biological elements. It is a promising approach to understand complex biological processes and predict their behavior under various conditions. METHODOLOGY: This paper is a review of the recent literature on computational modeling of biological systems. Our study focuses on the field of oncology and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and, in particular, agent-based modeling (ABM), between 2010 and May 2023. RESULTS: Most of the articles studied focus on improving the diagnosis and understanding the behaviors of biological entities, with metaheuristic algorithms being the models most used. Several challenges are highlighted regarding increasing and structuring knowledge about biological systems, developing holistic models that capture multiple scales and levels of organization, reproducing emergent behaviors of biological systems, validating models with experimental data, improving computational performance of models and algorithms, and ensuring privacy and personal data protection are discussed.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the optimal design of a miniature fiber-optic linear displacement sensor. It is characterized by its ability to measure displacements along a millimetric range with sub-micrometric resolution. The sensor consists of a triangular reflective grating and two fiber-optic probes. The measurement principle of the sensor is presented. The design of the sensor's triangular grating has been geometrically optimized by considering the step angle of the grating to enhance the sensor's resolution. The optimization method revealed a global optimum at which the highest resolution is obtained.

ABSTRACT

L-Carnitine is a key molecule in the transfer of fatty acid across mitochondrial membranes. Bioavailable L-carnitine is either provided by an endogeneous biosynthesis or after intestinal absorption of dietary items containing L-carnitine. After intestinal absorption or hepatic biosynthesis, L-carnitine is transferred to organs whose metabolism is dependent upon fatty acid oxidation, such as skeletal muscle. To cross the muscle plasma membrane, there are several transporters involved. Among those transporters, OCTN2 is actually the only one to have been clearly characterized. Zidovudine is a commonly used inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication. Zidovudine has many side effects, including induction of myopathy characterized by a metabolic mitochondria dysfunction and a diminution of the muscle L-carnitine content. In this study, we described the characteristics of L-carnitine transport in C2C12 cells. We also demonstrated that zidovudine inhibited the L-carnitine transporter. This inhibition led to a significant reduction of the muscle cell growth. In C2C12 cells, the supplementation of L-carnitine prevented the effects of zidovudine and restored the normal cell growth.
