ABSTRACT

The excessive use of conventional antibiotics has resulted in significant aquatic pollution and a concerning surge in drug-resistant bacteria. Efforts have been consolidated to explore and develop environmentally friendly antimicrobial alternatives to mitigate the imminent threat posed by multi-resistant pathogens. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have gained prominence due to their low propensity to induce bacterial resistance, attributed to their multiple mechanisms of action and synergistic effects. Microalgae, particularly cyanobacteria, have emerged as promising alternatives with antibiotic potential to address these challenges. The aim of this review is to present some AMPs extracted from microalgae, emphasizing their activity against common pathogens and elucidating their mechanisms of action, as well as their potential application in the aquaculture industry. Likewise, the biosynthesis, advantages and disadvantages of the use of AMPs are described. Currently, biotechnology tolls are used to enhance the action of these peptides, such as genetically modified microalgae and recombinant proteins. Cyanobacteria are also mentioned as major producers of peptides, among them, the genus Lyngbya is described as the most important producer of bioactive peptides with potential therapeutic use. The majority of cyanobacterial AMPs are of the cyclic type, meaning that they have cysteine and disulfide bridges, thanks to this, their greater antimicrobial activity and selectivity. Likewise, we found that large hydrophobic aromatic amino acid residues increase specificity, and improve antibacterial efficacy. However, based on the results of this review, it is possible to highlight that while microalgae show potential as a source of AMPs, further research in this field is necessary to achieve safe and competitive production. Therefore, the data presented here can aid in the selection of microalgal species, peptide structures, and target bacteria, with the goal of establishing biotechnological platforms for aquaculture applications.

ABSTRACT

This review aims to perform an updated bibliographical survey on the cultivation of microalgae in domestic wastewater with a focus on biotechnological aspects. It was verified that the largest number of researches developed was about cultures in microalgae-bacteria consortium and mixed cultures of microalgae, followed by researches referring to the species Chlorella vulgaris and to the family Scenedesmaceae. According to published studies, these microorganisms are efficient in the biological treatment of domestic wastewater, as well as in the production of high value-added biomass, as they are capable of biosorbing the organic and inorganic compounds present in the culture medium, thus generating cells with high levels of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. These compounds are of great importance for different industry sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, food, and also for agriculture and aquaculture. In addition, biomolecules produced by microalgae can be extracted for several biotechnological applications; however, most studies focus on the production of biofuels, with biodiesel being the main one. There are also other emerging applications that still require more in-depth research, such as the use of biomass as a biofertilizer and biostimulant in the production of bioplastic. Therefore, it is concluded that the cultivation of microalgae in domestic wastewater is a sustainable way to promote effluent bioremediation and produce valuable biomass for the biobased industry, contributing to the development of technology for the green economy.

ABSTRACT

The use of microalgae as a source of food and pharmaceutical ingredients has garnered growing interest in recent years. Despite the rapid growth of the nutraceutical market, knowledge about the potential of bioactive molecules from microalgae remains insufficient. The present study aimed to investigate the biotechnological potential of the green microalga Desmodesmus armatus isolated from a semi-arid region of Brazil. The algal biomass was characterized in terms of gross biochemical composition, exopolysaccharide content, enzymatic inhibition capacity, and antioxidant, antibacterial, and hemolytic activities from solvents of different polarities (water, ethanol, acetone, and hexane). D armatus biomass had 40% of crude protein content, 25.94% of lipids, and 25.03% of carbohydrates. The prebiotic potential of exopolysaccharides from D armatus was demonstrated, which stimulated the growth of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum bacteria strains. Moreover, the enzyme inhibition capacity for the proteases chymotrypsin (34.78%-45.8%) and pepsin (16.64%-27.27%), in addition to α-amylase (24.79%) and lipase (31.05%) was confirmed. The antioxidant potential varied between the different extracts, with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl sequestration values varying between 17.51% and 63.12%, and those of the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) method between 6.82% and 22.89%. In the antibacterial activity test, only the ethanolic extract showed inhibition against Listeria sp. (at minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] = 256 µg mL-1). This fraction also presented the highest significant levels of hemolysis (31.88%-52.45%). In summary, the data presented in the study suggest the presence of biocompounds with biotechnological and nutraceutical potential in the D armatus biomass. Future studies may evaluate the inclusion of this biomass in foods in order to increase their biological value.

Endosymbiotic dinoflagellates provide the nutritional basis for marine invertebrates, especially reef-building corals. These dinoflagellates are sensitive to environmental changes, and understanding the factors that can increase the resistance of the symbionts is crucial for the elucidation of the mechanisms involved with coral bleaching. Here, we demonstrate how the endosymbiotic dinoflagellate Durusdinium glynnii is affected by concentration (1760 vs 440 µM) and source (sodium nitrate vs urea) of nitrogen after light and thermal stress exposure. The effectiveness in the use of the two nitrogen forms was proven by the nitrogen isotopic signature. Overall, high nitrogen concentrations, regardless of source, increased D. glynnii growth, chlorophyll-a, and peridinin levels. During the pre-stress period, the use of urea accelerated the growth of D. glynnii compared to cells grown using sodium nitrate. During the luminous stress, high nitrate conditions increased cell growth, but no changes in pigments composition was observed. On the other hand, during thermal stress, a steep and steady decline in cell densities over time was observed, except for high urea condition, where there is cellular division and peridinin accumulation 72 h after the thermal shock. Our findings suggest peridinin has a protective role during the thermal stress, and the uptake of urea by D. glynnii can alleviate thermal stress responses, eventually mitigating coral bleaching events.

Inflammatory and oxidative processes are tightly regulated by innate and adaptive immune systems, which are involved in the pathology of a diversity of chronic diseases. Soybean peptides, such as lunasin, have emerged as one of the most hopeful food-derived peptides with a positive impact on health. The aim was to study the potential antioxidant and immunomodulatory activity of a lunasin-enriched soybean extract (LES). The protein profile of LES was characterized, and its behavior under simulated gastrointestinal digestion was evaluated. Besides its in vitro radical scavenging capacity, LES and lunasin's effects on cell viability, phagocytic capacity, oxidative stress, and inflammation-associated biomarkers were investigated in both RAW264.7 macrophages and lymphocytes EL4. Lunasin and other soluble peptides enriched after aqueous solvent extraction partially resisted the action of digestive enzymes, being potentially responsible for the beneficial effects of LES. This extract scavenged radicals, reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and exerted immunostimulatory effects, increasing nitric oxide (NO) production, phagocytic activity, and cytokine release in macrophages. Lunasin and LES also exerted dose-dependent immunomodulatory effects on EL4 cell proliferation and cytokine production. The modulatory effects of soybean peptides on both immune cell models suggest their potential protective role against oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune response-associated disorders.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine whether the macroalgae Ulva papenfussi and Ulva nematoidea could be alternatives for preventing Litopenaeus vannamei vibriosis caused by the bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Phytochemical screening was performed on methanolic extracts to qualitatively determine the main groups of bioactive compounds, previous to an in vitro antibacterial test against V. parahaemolitycus. Phenols, polyphenols, flavonoids, and the high presence of carbohydrates were found in both macroalgae. U. papenfussi showed more presence of lipids and alkaloids than U. nematoidea . Macroalgae extracts prepared (v:v) with a 1:1 methanol: dichloromethane solvent was used for the in vitro test using the disc diffusion method (MDD). Filter paper discs impregnated with 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 mg of the extracts showed antibacterial activity against V. Parahaemolitycus in a dose-dependent manner in both macroalgae. The inhibition zone varied significantly (p < 0.05) from 8.33 ± 0.12 to 11.41 ± 0.73 mm for 1 to 3 mg of extract levels, respectively. In conclusion, both macroalgae have antibacterial activity in their crude extracts against this bacteria. It is suggested to evaluate it as a feed additive for L. vannamei. This study is the first report on a phytochemical screening and antibacterial activity of these macroalgae against V. parahaemolyticus.

Peridinin is a light-harvesting carotenoid present in phototrophic dinoflagellates and has great potential for new drug applications and cosmetics development. Herein, the effects of irradiance mediated by light-emitting diodes on growth performance, carotenoid and fatty acid profiles, and antioxidant activity of the endosymbiotic dinoflagellate Durusdinium glynnii were investigated. The results demonstrate that D. glynnii is particularly well adapted to low-light conditions; however, it can be high-light-tolerant. In contrast to other light-harvesting carotenoids, the peridinin accumulation in D. glynnii occurred during high-light exposure. The peridinin to chlorophyll-a ratio varied as a function of irradiance, while the peridinin to total carotenoids ratio remained stable. Under optimal irradiance for growth, there was a peak in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) bioaccumulation. This study contributes to the understanding of the photoprotective role of peridinin in endosymbiont dinoflagellates and highlights the antioxidant activity of peridinin-rich extracts. ABSTRACT

The increased demands and dependence on depleted oil reserves, accompanied by global warming and climate change have driven the world to explore and develop new strategies for global sustainable development. Among sustainable biomass sources, microalgae represent a promising alternative to fossil fuel and can contribute to the achievement of important Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This article has reviewed the various applications of microalgal biomass that includes (i) the use in aquaculture and its sustainability; (ii) commercial value and emerging extraction strategies of carotenoids; (iii) biofuels from microalgae and their application in internal combustion engines; (iv) the use and reuse of water in microalgae cultivation; and (v) microalgae biotechnology as a key factor to assist SDGs. The future prospects and challenges on the microalgae circular bio economy, issues with regard to the scale-up and water demand in microalgae cultivation are also highlighted.

Flocculation has been proved an efficient method for microalgal biomass harvesting, but some coagulant agents may have adverse effects on microalgae growth, making the reuse of the medium unfeasible. In this study, Haematococcus pluvialis was harvested by different flocculants, and the feasibility of the reuse of the culture medium was evaluated. Results suggested that both inorganics, polyaluminum chloride (PA) and ferric chloride (FC), and organics, extracted from Moringa oleifera seed (MSE) and chitosan (CH) resulted in efficient flocculation - flocculation efficiency above 99 %. However, using PA and FC had adverse effects on the astaxanthin recovery from haematocysts - losses of 58.6 and 73.5 %, respectively. Bioflocculants in the reused medium also had higher growth performance than inorganic ones. Furthermore, bioflocculants in reused medium increase the contents of ß-carotene, astaxanthin, and linolenic acid. This investigation demonstrated that using MSE and CHI for harvesting H. pluvialis enables the water reusability from a flocculated medium.

Bio-flocculation is a sustainable low-cost harvesting technique for microalgae biomass production; however, it is generally less efficient than chemical flocculants. This study aims to investigate the efficiency of Moringa oleifera seeds as a bio-flocculant for harvesting Tetradesmus dimorphus biomass. Four extracts from integral and residual (seeds without lipids) biomass of M. oleifera seeds using salt or aqueous solutions were used at four concentrations (100, 200, 300, and 400 ppm). Flocculation efficiency (FE) increased as the pH decreased. The addition of the extracts reduced the pH of the cultures, dispensing pH adjustment after dosing the flocculating agent. Salt extracts exhibited higher flocculation efficiency than aqueous extracts. The highest flocculation efficiency (~ 98%) was obtained using a salt extract of residual biomass of seeds in any concentration varying from 100 to 400 ppm. The predicted values obtained from a data modeling using response surface methodology approached the real values (r 2 = 0.9382), resulting in an adequate optimization of the flocculant concentration of ~ 335 ppm and pH 5.6 for a predicted FE of ~ 106%. The findings of the present study confirmed that the salt extract from residual biomass of M. oleifera seeds is an effective bio-flocculant for T. dimorphus biomass harvesting.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely distributed in marine ecosystems, and their ubiquitous presence is raising concern, particularly about possible impacts on fisheries resources. In tropical regions, shellfish fisheries represent an essential source of income and subsistence for traditional communities, and adverse effects on these resources may have severe consequences on human health. In the present study, bivalve molluscs of the species Anomalocardia flexuosa, captured in the region of the Itapessoca estuary in Pernambuco, Brazil, were analysed. A total of 90% of the individuals presented MP particles in their tissue. We observed an average of 5.15 ± 3.80 MP particles per individual, and for each gram of soft tissue, 3.66 ± 2.59 MP particles were found. Our results showed that MPs are present in clams captured on the Pernambuco coast and that the species studied proved to be suitable for monitoring the levels of microplastic pollution.

ABSTRACT

Astaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid widely used in aquaculture and nutraceutical industries. Among natural sources, the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis is the non-genetically modified organism with the greatest capacity to accumulate astaxanthin. Therefore, it is important to understand emerging strategies in upstream and downstream processing of astaxanthin from this microalga. This review covers all aspects regarding the production and the market of natural astaxanthin from H. pluvialis. Astaxanthin biosynthesis, metabolic pathways, and nutritional metabolisms from the green vegetative motile to red hematocyst stage were reviewed in detail. Also, traditional and emerging techniques on biomass harvesting and astaxanthin recovery were presented and evaluated. Moreover, the global market of astaxanthin was discussed, and guidelines for sustainability increasing of the production chain of astaxanthin from H. pluvialis were highlighted, based on biorefinery models. This review can serve as a baseline on the current knowledge of H. pluvialis and encourage new researchers to enter this field of research.

ABSTRACT

Recent advances in microalgae biotechnology have proven that these microorganisms contain a number of bioactive molecules, that can be used as food additives that help prevent disease. The green microalga Chlorella vulgaris presents several biomolecules, such as lutein and astaxanthin, with antioxidant capacity, which can play a protective role in tissues. In this study, we produced and analyzed a C. vulgaris functional alcoholic beverage (produced using a traditional Brazilian alcoholic beverage, cachaça, and C. vulgaris biomass). Assays were conducted in vitro by radical scavenging tests, and in vivo, by modeling cortical spreading depression in rat brains. Scavenging radical assays showed that consumption of the C. vulgaris alcoholic beverage had a DPPH inhibition of 77.2%. This functional alcoholic beverage at a concentration of 12.5 g L-1 significantly improved cortical spreading depression velocity in the rat brains (2.89 mm min-1), when compared with cachaça alone (3.68 mm min-1) and control (distilled water; 3.25 mm min-1). Moreover, animals that consumed the functional beverage gained less weight than those that consumed just alcohol and the control groups. These findings suggest that the C. vulgaris functional alcoholic beverage plays a protective physiologic role in protecting brain cells from the effects of drinking ethanol.

Oil spill events in the marine environment can have a deleterious impact on the affected ecosystems, such as coral reefs, with direct consequences for their socioeconomic value. The mutualistic relationship between tropical corals and their dinoflagellate symbionts (Symbiodiniaceae) provide structural and nutritional basis for a high local biodiversity in oligotrophic waters. Here, we investigated effects of crude oil water-accommodated fraction on the competitive fitness of the model zooxanthellae species Symbiodinium glynnii. Results of laboratory essays demonstrate that crude oil carbon is incorporated into the cellular biomass with a concomitant change of δ13C isotopic value. Carcinogenic/mutagenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were identified in the culture media and were responsible for a linear reduction in population growth of S. glynnii, presumably related to energy relocation for DNA repair. Additionally, the experiments revealed that physiological effects induced by crude oil compounds are genetically inherited by the following generations under non-contaminated growth conditions, and induce a reduction in the competitive fitness to cope with other environmental parameters, such as low salinity. We suggest that the effects of crude oil contamination represent an imparing factor for S. glynnii coping with anthropogenic drivers (e.g. warming and acidification) and interfere with the delicate symbiont-host relationship of tropical corals. This is especially relevant in the coastal areas of northeastern Brazil where an oil spill event deposited crude oil on shallow water sediments with the potential to be resuspended to the water column by physical and/or biological activity, enhancing the risk of future coral bleaching events.

This study aimed to evaluate the growth of Arthrospira (Spirulina)platensiscultivated in Zarrouk culture medium and effluent from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) reared in biofloc system. Four treatments were used: Control (100% Zarrouk), E50 (50% Zarrouk + 50% Tilapia effluent), E75 (25% Zarrouk + 75% Tilapia effluent), and E100 (100% Tilapia effluent), and the experiment lasted 10 days. Growth parameters such as maximum cell density (MCD), doubling time (DT), and growth rate (K) were daily evaluated, as well aspH and water temperature. In addition, the concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrite-N (NO2-N), and nitrate-N (NO3-N) were analyzed in order to compare nitrogen absorption. Among treatments, E50 and E75 obtained higher maximum cell densities and presented an exponential growth rate similar to the control treatment. Regarding the concentrations of nitrogen compounds, a significant reduction was observed in all treatments, with an NO3-Nuptake of 99%, followed by 80% of TAN and 90% of NO2-N. Thus, giving the results obtained, besides being able to grow in wastewater, A. platensis can also be used in bioremediation processes, confirming the potential of this species.

ABSTRACT: A type of dredge was introduced as fishing gear along the extractive bank of Mangue Seco - PE from which the largest annual catch of Anomalocardia flexuosa in the world is extracted. This study was carried out with the objective of estimating the selectivity of the new fishing gear and quantitatively evaluating the length classes most compromised by the catches, especially considering 20 mm as the reference value. Specimens larger than this size are most likely to be mature. For the selectivity estimation, the methodology using codends (16 or 20 mm) and small meshed cover (2 mm) was used. To estimate the selectivity parameters, a logistic regression and the Bayesian approach were used. The transition between the state in which the specimen is invulnerable to the fishing gear and vulnerable occurs between 10 and 18 mm, using a 16 mm mesh, and using a 20 mm mesh, this transition is between 14 and 20 mm. Dredgers with 16 mm and 20 mm mesh compromise a large proportion of specimens smaller than 20 mm. If the intention is to protect this part of the population, measures such as total restriction of the 16 mm mesh and use of the 20 mm mesh should be necessary only in the months of less catching incidences, or increasing the mesh to 25 mm.


RESUMO: Um tipo de draga foi introduzido como arte de pesca no banco extrativista de Mangue Seco - PE de onde se extrai a maior captura anual de Anomalocardia flexuosa do mundo. Este trabalho foi realizado com objetivo de estimar a seletividade do novo petrecho de pesca e avaliar quantitativamente quais são as classes de comprimento mais penalizadas nas capturas, tendo especialmente como referencial o valor de 20 mm. Exemplares maiores que esse tamanho tem elevada probabilidade de estarem maturos. Para estimativa da seletividade foi utilizado o método com uso de saco (16 ou 20 mm) e sobresaco (2 mm). Para estimativa dos parâmetros de seletividade foi utilizada regressão logística e abordagem bayesiana. A transição entre o estado em que o exemplar é invulnerável à arte de pesca e em que o mesmo seria quase com certeza capturado ocorre para malha de 16 mm entre 10 e 18 mm, enquanto para malha de 20 mm essa transição se dá entre 14 e 20 mm. As dragas com malha de 16 e 20 mm penalizam uma proporção grande de exemplares menores que 20 mm. Se a intenção é proteger essa parcela da população, seriam necessárias medidas como a restrição total da malha de 16 mm e uso da malha de 20 mm somente nos meses de menor incidência de recrutamento, ou o aumento da malha para 25 mm.

Microalgae are considered one of the most promising raw materials for the development of high value products for pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmetic industries, as well as being potential sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals for human consumption. Hence, the present research focuses extraction of antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds from Scenedesmus subspicatus using solvents of different polarities. Different solvents such as ethanol, methanol, butanol, acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide, and water were used to extract compounds from the green microalgae S. subspicatus and then they were examined for phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties. In vitro free radical quenching and total antioxidant activity of extracts were investigated with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl and compared with catequin and gallic acid as positive controls. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated in gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Aqueous extracts and dimethyl sulfoxide presented better performance in phytochemical analysis. This result showed consistency in the sequential tests. The antioxidant activity was also better using the two solvents cited above. The extracts acetone, water, and dimethyl sulfoxide showed ability to inhibit the growth of Bacillus subtilis. However, only dimethyl sulfoxide inhibited the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. Use of the aqueous extract, proven its effectiveness, is an economic protocol and avoids the use of toxic substances.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the moment of the year for the oyster recruitment and define the type of collector and environmental conditions that maximize recruitment. Collections were conducted, during 12 months, on Amazon Macrotidal Mangrove at two different sites: raft (point I) and mangrove (point II). In each location three types of collectors were used (1) transparent PET bottles, (2) green PET bottles, and (3) PVC sheets, each with three replicates. Spats were counted and measured at 45-day intervals, while the environmental data were measured every two weeks. Identification of oyster species occurred by genetic testing (multiplex PCR) by randomly selecting individuals by sampling. Results indicated spat capturing was significantly influenced by the collector type, location and period of collection (P<0.05, MANOVA) with significantly higher recruitment in the PVC collector (P<0.05, Tukey test). Oyster recruitment occurred throughout the year, suggesting that these individuals reproduce during all months; however, months with less rain and greater salinity were the best for spat collection, while the rainy period with lower salinity proved to be the best for individuals growth. The location in interaction with the environmental variables, mainly salinity, has a significant effect on the recruitment rate of spat and on their size, so that point II (mangrove) had the best results for recruitment and point I (raft) provided the spats of the largest size. Genetic identification verified two native oysters species (Crassostrea gasar and Crassostrea rhizophorae) in both points (I and II).


RESUMO: O estudo teve como objetivo determinar o período do ano para coletar sementes de ostras, definir o tipo de coletor e as condições ambientais que maximizam o recrutamento das sementes. As coletas foram conduzidas, durante 12 meses, no manguezal amazônico de macromaré em dois locais distintos: balsa (ponto I) e manguezal (ponto II). Em cada ponto de coleta foram utilizados três tipos de coletores (1) garrafas PET transparentes, (2) garrafas PET verdes e (3) forro de PVC, com três réplicas cada. As sementes foram contadas e medidas a cada 45 dias e os dados ambientais mensurados a cada duas semanas. As espécies de ostras foram identificadas por teste genético (PCR multiplex) com indivíduos aleatoriamente selecionados por coleta. Os resultados indicaram que a captura de sementes foi influenciada significativamente pelo tipo de coletor, localização e período de coleta (P<0,05, MANOVA) com recrutamento significativamente maior no coletor de PVC (P<0,05, teste de Tukey). O recrutamento ocorreu durante todo ano, sugerindo reprodução mensal, contudo, os meses de menor pluviosidade e maior salinidade foram melhores para coletar sementes, enquanto o período chuvoso, com menor salinidade, favoreceu um crescimento superior. O local de coleta em interação com variáveis ambientais, principalmente salinidade, apresentou efeito significativo sobre a fixação e tamanho das sementes de maneira que o ponto II obteve melhores resultados de fixação e o ponto I sementes de maior tamanho. A análise genética identificou duas espécies nativas (Crassostrea gasar e Crassostrea rhizophorae) em ambos os pontos (I e II).

Introducción: la enseñanza del idioma Inglés constituye un valioso instrumento de trabajo en la formación de los profesionales de la salud y el desarrollo de la expresión escrita es fundamental para el desempeño profesional del futuro egresado. Objetivo: desarrollar la expresión escrita a partir del tratamiento del inglés con fines específicos. Materiales y Métodos: se realizó una investigación que culminó con la aplicación de un pre-experimento pedagógico en la Filial Médica de Colón durante el período comprendido de septiembre de 2015 a junio del 2016. La muestra estuvo conformada por los 16 estudiantes que componen el 4to año de la carrera de Estomatología. Se emplearon métodos del nivel teórico y empírico como el analítico-sintético, inductivo-deductivo, revisión y análisis de documentos, observación, además de otras técnicas de obtención de la información directa y de procedimientos estadísticos. Resultados: el diagnóstico inicial del estado de la habilidad de escritura reveló que el 18,7 % de los estudiantes se ubicó en el nivel alto, el 50 % en el nivel medio y 31,2 % en el nivel bajo. La etapa de constatación mostró que el 68,7 %, 18,7 % y 12,5 % se ubicaron en los niveles alto, medio y bajo respectivamente evidenciándose un aumento considerable de estos indicadores. Conclusiones: el sistema de actividades contribuyó a desarrollar la expresión escrita al vincularse con la terminología de estomatología y demandar el empleo de funciones comunicativas y construcción textual en situaciones de su ámbito académico y ocupacional lo que favoreció el logro del objetivo trazado (AU).


Background: the English language teaching is a valuable working tool in health professionals training and the development of writing skills is very important for the professional performance of the future graduated. Aim: to develop the writing skills through the handling of English for specific purposes. Materials and Methods: a research that finished with the application of a pedagogical pre-experiment was carried out in the Matanzas Medical University branch of Colón from September 2015 to June 2016. The sample was made up by 16 4th-year Dentistry students. Several methods of the theoretical and empirical levels were used such as the analytical-synthetic one, the inductive-deductive, documents reviewing and analysis, observation, other techniques of gathering direct information and statistical procedures. Outcomes: the initial diagnosis of the writing skill revealed that 18,7 % of the students were in the high level, 50 % in the middle and 31,2 % in the low one. The assessment stage showed a 68,7 %, 18,7 % y 12,5 % of them in the high, middle and low levels respectively, evidencing a considerable increase of these indicators. Conclusions: the sistema of activities, contributed to develop the writing skill because it was linked to Dentistry terminology and required the usage of communicative functions and test structures in situations of the students' academic and occupational environment, favoring the achievement of the proposed objective (AU).
