ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: There are over 150 prognostic factors in lung cancer, which allow to predict the outcome of the disease.Many molecular factors are known to have independent prognostic significance. At present these factors are not routinely used in the clinical practice, but they may play an important role in the future for precise individual prognosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 122 patients with non-small cell lung cancer.Using immunohistochemistry we examined the expression of estrogen receptors--ERalpha and Erbeta. RESULTS: The median time of survival depending on the expression of Eralpha was 31 months, while for Erbeta was 73 months. CONCLUSIONS: Erbeta is a positive prognostic factor in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Many of the clinical and fundamental scientific studies are directed to the investigation of the prognostic factors in patients with lung cancer. Many molecular factors are known to have independent prognostic significance and although these factors are not routinely used in the clinical practice, they may play an important role in the future. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 122 patients with non-small cell lung cancer. We examined the expression of ICAM-1 and C-Jun. RESULTS: The median time of survival for the group with poor expression of C-Jun was 39 months, and 26 months for the group with strong expresssion. The median time of survival for the group with poor expression of ICAM-1 was 51 months and only 9 months for the group with strong expresssion. CONCLUSION: The increased levels of ICAM-1 and C-Jun are negative prognostic factors for the patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: The discovery of new genes with important regulatory functions on cellular level, allowed the investigation of many biological and molecular changes and defining their value as potential prognostic factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 122 patients with non-small cell lung cancer. We examined the expression of cyclin D1 and p53. RESULTS: The 5-years survival rate was 26% for the group with strong nuclear expression of cyclin D1, and 80% for the group with moderate expression of the marker. We found 5-years survival rate of 100% for the group with poor expression of p53, and 24.55% for the group with strong expression. CONCLUSIONS: The increased levels of cyclin D1 and p53 are negative prognostic factors for the patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

The present work is focused on examining the effect of the structurally similar dental monomers bis-GA and bis-GMA on the expression of histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) in comparison with fibroblast vitality and proliferation. The fibroblast cell line McCoy-Plovdiv was cultivated in a serum-free medium and was treated with both monomers. Cell vitality was measured by the crystal violet test. Mitotic index and cell morphology were assessed. An immunocytochemical technique was applied to follow the expression of proliferative antigens PCNA and Ki-67 and of HBGA. The expression level of HBGA was measured by an improved pixel selection algorithm with proprietary software. The lowest concentration of 2.5 micromol/L did not significantly affect morphology, vitality, or proliferation activity. Interestingly, the quantitative analysis revealed augmented expression of HBGA B at 2.5 micromol/L. The higher concentrations of the dental monomers reduced cell vitality and mitotic indices and altered proliferative antigen expression. Bis-GA proved to be more toxic than bis-GMA and caused more prominent alterations including greater enhancement of HBGA B expression. We present novel evidence for altered expression of proliferative antigens and enhanced expression of HBGA B in fibroblasts treated with dental monomers bis-GA and bis-GMA suggesting that these substances affect cell morphology, proliferative activity, and antigenic profile.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: There is a worldwide increase in the frequency of pulmonary carcinoma The only radical treatment at such patients is the operative one, but it is associated with a lot of complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We presented 41 patients aged over 70 years old with non small cell pulmonary carcinoma who are performed pulmonary resection. The patients were staged as follows: stage IA - 5, stage IB - 7, stage IlIA - 9 patients. We performed 22 lobectomies, 4 bilobectomies and 15 pulmonectomies. RESULTS: Analyzing all the results, we found 5 years survival at 29.2%, 3 years survival at 46.3% and one year survival at 78% of the operated patients. We found complication in the postoperative period at 15 of the patients; only one patient died (2.4%). CONCLUSIONS: We consider, that the precisely selected patients at the age between 70-76 years old would not influence significantly the postoperative and long-term results at patients with non small carcinoma of the lungs.
