ABSTRACT

The support has been provided by clinical trials and guidelines for managing patent foramen ovale (PFO) in adults; however, the optimal approach is still unclear for treating PFO in pediatric patients. PFO and its associated clinical syndromes, imaging diagnosis, and management in pediatric patients were analyzed by a comprehensive analysis. Extensive research was performed using electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and EMBASE. This review includes the studies published until February 1st, 2024. A total of 583 articles were obtained, of which 54 were included in the comprehensive review. Numerous evidences have indicated that a right-to-left shunt through a PFO may be involved in cryptogenic stroke in children, although the connection between migraine and aura has not been substantiated by robust evidence. Children with sickle cell disease and a PFO were at higher risks of paradoxical embolization, rare syndromes caused by PFO could also occur in children such as platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome, myocardial infarction, and decompression sickness. Contrast transthoracic echocardiography was deemed the most appropriate examination for children due to its favorable transthoracic windows, eliminating the need for anesthesia. This review suggested that the additional treatment was not needed as no evidence was provided for potential future complications linked to isolated PFO in children. For children facing unique circumstances related to PFO, a customized interdisciplinary consultation is essential prior to considering medical interventions.

ABSTRACT

The origins and extreme morphological evolution of the modern dog breeds are poorly studied because the founder populations are extinct. Here, we analyse eight 100-200 years old dog fur samples obtained from traditional North Swedish clothing, to explore the origin and artificial selection of the modern Nordic Lapphund and Elkhound dog breeds. Population genomic analysis confirmed the Lapphund and Elkhound breeds to originate from the local dog population, and showed a distinct decrease in genetic diversity in agreement with intense breeding. We identified eleven genes under positive selection during the breed development. In particular, the MSRB3 gene, associated with breed-related ear morphology, was selected in all Lapphund and Elkhound breeds, and functional assays showed that a SNP mutation in the 3'UTR region suppresses its expression through miRNA regulation. Our findings demonstrate analysis of near-modern dog artifacts as an effective tool for interpreting the origin and artificial selection of the modern dog breeds.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between serum 25(OH)D and kidney stone disease (KSD) in participants from the UK Biobank. METHODS: We used data from the UK Biobank. Our analysis involved Cox proportional hazards models to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to estimate the association between serum 25(OH)D levels (measured at the time of recruitment) and the risk of KSD, which was determined using hospital records. RESULTS: This study involved 444,343 participants, with 4,458 cases of KSD identified during an average follow-up period of 12.6 years. Higher 25(OH)D levels were not associated with developing kidney stones in general population model 3 (HR = 0.88 [95% CI 0.77-1.01]). Interestingly, higher serum 25(OH)D concentrations in women over 60 years old were associated with a lower risk of kidney stone disease. The multivariate HRs and 95% CIs for participants who had serum 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/L or ≥ 75 nmol/L, compared with those who were severely deficient (25[OH]D < 25 nmol/L), were 0.74 (0.58-0.95), 0.60 (0.43-0.85) for KSD, respectively (P for trend < 0.01). However, this trend was not statistically significant in the subgroup analysis of serum calcium ion concentration. CONCLUSION: High 25(OH)D levels were not associated with a higher incidence of kidney stones if serum calcium levels are within a normal range. The findings alleviate physiological concerns regarding the supplementation of vitamin D alone to raise serum 25(OH)D concentration.

ABSTRACT

The high energy density and robust cycle properties of lithium-ion batteries contribute to their extensive range of applications. Polyolefin separators are often used for the purpose of storing electrolytes, hence ensuring the efficient internal ion transport. Nevertheless, the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries is constrained by its limited interaction with electrolytes and poor capacity for cation transport. This work presents the preparation of a new bio-based nanofiber separator by combining oxidized lignin (OL) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with polyimide (PI) using an electrospinning technique. Analysis was conducted to examine and compare the structure, morphology, thermal characteristics, and EIS of the separator with those of commercially available polypropylene separator (PP). The results indicate that the PI@OL and PI-OL@ 10 % HNTs separators exhibit higher lithium ion transference number and ionic conductivity. Moreover, the use of HNTs successfully impeded the proliferation of lithium dendrites, hence exerting a beneficial impact on both the cycle performance and multiplier performance of the battery. Consequently, after undergoing 300 iterations, the battery capacity of LiFePO4|PI-OL@ 10 % HNTs|Li stays at 92.1 %, surpassing that of PP (86.8 %) and PI@OL (89.6 %). These findings indicate that this new bio-based battery separator (PI-OL@HNTs) has the great potential to serve as a substitute for the commonly used PP separator in lithium metal batteries.

ABSTRACT

How brain functions in the distorted ischemic state before and after reperfusion is unclear. It is also uncertain whether there are any indicators within ischemic brain that could predict surgical outcomes. To alleviate these issues, we applied individual brain connectome in chronic steno-occlusive vasculopathy (CSOV) to map both ischemic symptoms and their postbypass changes. A total of 499 bypasses in 455 CSOV patients were collected and followed up for 47.8 ± 20.5 months. Using multimodal parcellation with connectivity-based and pathological distortion-independent approach, areal MR features of brain connectome were generated with three measurements of functional connectivity (FC), structural connectivity, and PageRank centrality at the single-subject level. Thirty-three machine-learning models were then trained with clinical and areal MR features to obtain acceptable classifiers for both ischemic symptoms and their postbypass changes, among which, 11 were deemed acceptable (AUC > 0.7). Notably, the FC feature-based model for long-term neurological outcomes performed very well (AUC > 0.8). Finally, a Shapley additive explanations plot was adopted to extract important individual features in acceptable models to generate "fingerprints" of brain connectome. This study not only establishes brain connectomic fingerprint databases for brain ischemia with distortion, but also provides informative insights for how brain functions before and after reperfusion.

BACKGROUND: Helicase for meiosis 1 (HFM1), a putative DNA helicase expressed in germ-line cells, has been reported to be closely associated with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). However, the underlying molecular mechanism has not been clearly elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the function of HFM1 in the first meiotic prophase of mouse oocytes. RESULTS: The results suggested that the deficiency of HFM1 resulting in increased apoptosis and depletion of oocytes in mice, while the oocytes were arrested in the pachytene stage of the first meiotic prophase. In addition, impaired DNA double-strand break repair and disrupted synapsis were observed in the absence of HFM1. Further investigation revealed that knockout of HFM1 promoted ubiquitination and degradation of FUS protein mediated by FBXW11. Additionally, the depletion of HFM1 altered the intranuclear localization of FUS and regulated meiotic- and oocyte development-related genes in oocytes by modulating the expression of BRCA1. CONCLUSIONS: These findings elaborated that the critical role of HFM1 in orchestrating the regulation of DNA double-strand break repair and synapsis to ensure meiosis procession and primordial follicle formation. This study provided insights into the pathogenesis of POI and highlighted the importance of HFM1 in maintaining proper meiotic function in mouse oocytes.

ABSTRACT

The creation of frustrated Lewis pairs on catalyst surface is an effective strategy for tuning CO2 activation. The critical step in the formation of frustrated Lewis pairs is the spatial effect of proximal Lewis acid-Lewis base pairs. Here, we demonstrate a facile surface functionalization methodology that enables hydrogen bonding between N and H atoms to mediate the construction of frustrated Lewis pairs in poly(heptazine imide), thereby increasing the propensity to activate CO2 molecules. Experimental and theoretical results show that the construction of active hydrogen bonding regions can facilitate the bending of CO2 molecules. Furthermore, the delocalization of electron clouds induced by the hydrogen bonding-mediated frustrated Lewis pairs can promote the heterolytic cleavage and photocatalytic conversion of CO2. This work highlights the potential of utilizing hydrogen bonding-mediated strategy in heterogeneously photocatalytic activation of CO2 over polymer materials.

ABSTRACT

Background: Several studies have explored the effectiveness of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors combined with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in the treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer(LARC), particularly in microsatellite stable(MSS) or mismatch repair proficient(pMMR) LARC patients. We undertook a single-arm systematic review to comprehensively evaluate the advantages and potential risks associated with the use of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in conjunction with nCRT for patients diagnosed with locally advanced rectal cancer. Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, ASCO and ESMO were searched for related studies. The main outcomes were pathologic complete response (pCR), major pathological response (MPR), anal preservation, and adverse effects (AEs). Results: Fourteen articles including 533 locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients were analyzed. The pooled pCR, MPR, and anal preservation rates were 36%, 66% and 86%. Grade ≥3 adverse events occurred in 20%. Subgroup analysis showed that; dMMR/MSI-H had a pooled pCR (100%) and MPR (100%), pMMR/MSS had a pooled pCR (38%) and MPR (60%); the short-course radiotherapy and long-course radiotherapy had pooled pCR rates of 51% and 30%, respectively. The rates of pCR for the concurrent and sequential immuno-chemoradiotherapy subgroups at 30% and 40%, mirroring pCR rates for the PD-L1 and PD-1 inhibitor subgroups were 32% and 40%, respectively. Conclusion: In cases of locally advanced rectal cancer, PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors combined with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy have shown promising response rates and acceptable toxicity profiles. PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors combined with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy hence has a positive outcome even in MSS LARC patients. ABSTRACT

Rapid biological detection of pathogen micro-organisms has attracted much attention for practical biomedical applications. Despite the development in this field, it is still challenging to achieve simple and rapid biological detection using the microfluidic method. Herein, we propose a novel strategy of biological detection that combines precise detection control of the capillary microfluidic chip and versatile manipulation of magnetic beads. The microfluidic chip was fabricated via laser cutting, which utilized capillary pressure to realize rapid passive injection of liquid samples. Under an external magnetic field, the aptamer-modified magnetic beads were actuated to mix with Vibrio parahaemolyticus (V. parahaemolyticus) and its nucleic acid in the capillary microfluidic chip for rapid selective capture and detection, which could be achieved within 40 min. The experimental results demonstrated that V. parahaemolyticus could be captured using on-chip immunomagnetic beads with a high efficiency and significantly enhanced detection value. Due to these superior performances, the capillary microfluidic system, based on the manipulation of magnetic beads, demonstrated great potential for automatic biological detection.

ABSTRACT

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a fatal neurological illness that worsens with time. Preventing the aggregate formation of amyloid beta protein is a promising approach to treat Alzheimer's disease. This article describes an amiable procedure for the synthesis of Olesoxime-Resveratrol (OLX-RSV) encapsulated in exosomes. By suppressing Aß1-42 aggregation and crossing the blood-brain barrier also known as BBB after intravenous treatment without resulting in any discernible damage, the nanocomposite demonstrated good biocompatibility. A variety of characterization technique including particle size, TEM, and in vitro drug release experiments, were used to characterize the exosomes. Human Neuroblastoma (SHSY5Y) cells were used to test the cytotoxicity and viability of cells of the formulation using the Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. The prepared OLX-RSV-loaded exosomes were tested for their ability to suppress Aß1-42 in SHSY5Y Cells by analyzing the amyloid samples using CD spectra. The effects of apoptosis on Human neuroblastoma cells were studied using cytofluorometry. The parameters of SOD, caspase-3 and the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) were also evaluated. The behavioral outcomes of Morris water maze test demonstrated that OLX-RSV-loaded exosomes significantly enhanced the APP/PS1 mice's capacity to learn and remember spatial cues. Therefore, we hypothesized that OLX-RSV-loaded exosomes could be a useful and efficient method in the treatment of AD.

ABSTRACT

The combination of radiotherapy (RT) and immunotherapy shows promise in improving the clinical treatment of solid tumors; however, it faces challenges of low response rates and systemic toxicity. Herein, an implantable alginate/collagen hydrogel encapsulating C-C motif ligand 21 (CCL21)-expressing dendritic cells (CCL21-DCs@gel) was developed to potentiate the systemic antitumor effects of RT. The hydrogel functioned as a suitable reservoir for in vivo culture and proliferation of CCL21-DCs, thereby enabling sustained CCL21 release. The local CCL21 gradient induced by CCL21-DCs@gel significantly enhanced the efficacy of RT in suppressing primary tumor growth and inhibiting distant metastasis across several mouse models. Furthermore, the combination of RT with CCL21-DCs@gel provided complete prophylactic protection to mice. Mechanistic investigations revealed that CCL21-DCs@gel potentiated RT by promoting tumor lymphangiogenesis and attracting immune cell infiltration into the tumor. Collectively, these results suggest that CCL21-DCs@gel is a promising adjunct to RT for effectively eradicating tumors and preventing tumor recurrence.

ABSTRACT

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability in children. To ascertain the role of major genetic variants in the etiology of CP, we conducted exome sequencing on a large-scale cohort with clinical manifestations of CP. The study cohort comprised 505 girls and 1,073 boys. Utilizing the current gold standard in genetic diagnostics, 387 of these 1,578 children (24.5%) received genetic diagnoses. We identified 412 pathogenic and likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants across 219 genes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, and 59 P/LP copy number variants. The genetic diagnostic rate of children with CP labeled at birth with perinatal asphyxia was higher than the rate in children without asphyxia (P = 0.0033). Also, 33 children with CP manifestations (8.5%, 33 of 387) had findings that were clinically actionable. These results highlight the need for early genetic testing in children with CP, especially those with risk factors like perinatal asphyxia, to enable evidence-based medical decision-making.

ABSTRACT

Film bulk acoustic-wave resonators (FBARs) are widely utilized in the field of radio frequency (RF) filters due to their excellent performance, such as high operation frequency and high quality. In this paper, we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of an FBAR filter for the 3.0 GHz-3.2 GHz S-band. Using a scandium-doped aluminum nitride (Sc0.2Al0.8N) film, the filter is designed through a combined acoustic-electromagnetic simulation method, and the FBAR and filter are fabricated using an eight-step lithographic process. The measured FBAR presents an effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (keff2) value up to 13.3%, and the measured filter demonstrates a -3 dB bandwidth of 115 MHz (from 3.013 GHz to 3.128 GHz), a low insertion loss of -2.4 dB, and good out-of-band rejection of -30 dB. The measured 1 dB compression point of the fabricated filter is 30.5 dBm, and the first series resonator burns out first as the input power increases. This work paves the way for research on high-power RF filters in mobile communication.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative sore throat (POST) is a common complication following endotracheal tube removal, and effective preventive strategies remain elusive. This trial aimed to determine whether actively regulating intraoperative cuff pressure below the tracheal capillary perfusion pressure threshold could effectively reduce POST incidence in patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopic procedures. METHODS: This single-center, randomized controlled superiority trial allocated 60 patients scheduled for elective gynecological laparoscopic procedures into two groups: one designated for cuff pressure measurement and adjustment (CPMA) group, and a control group where only cuff pressure measurement was conducted without any subsequent adjustments. The primary outcome was POST incidence at rest within 24 h post-extubation. Secondary outcomes included cough, hoarseness, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) incidence, and post-extubation pain severity. RESULTS: The incidence of sore throat at rest within 24 h after extubation in the CPMA group was lower than in the control group, meeting the criteria for statistically significant superiority based on a one-sided test (3.3% vs. 26.7%, P < 0.025). No statistically significant differences were observed in cough, hoarseness, or pain scores within 24 h post-extubation between the two groups. However, the CPMA group had a higher incidence of PONV compared to the control group. Additionally, the control group reported higher sore throat severity scores within 24 h post-extubation. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous monitoring and maintenance of tracheal tube cuff pressure at 18 mmHg were superior to merely monitoring without adjustment, effectively reducing the incidence of POST during quiet within 24 h after tracheal tube removal in gynecological laparoscopic surgery patients. ABSTRACT

Accurate classification of tumor cells is of importance for cancer diagnosis and further therapy. In this study, we develop multimolecular marker-activated transmembrane DNA computing systems (MTD). Employing the cell membrane as a native gate, the MTD system enables direct signal output following simple spatial events of "transmembrane" and "in-cell target encounter", bypassing the need of multistep signal conversion. The MTD system comprises two intelligent nanorobots capable of independently sensing three molecular markers (MUC1, EpCAM, and miR-21), resulting in comprehensive analysis. Our AND-AND logic-gated system (MTDAND-AND) demonstrates exceptional specificity, allowing targeted release of drug-DNA specifically in MCF-7 cells. Furthermore, the transformed OR-AND logic-gated system (MTDOR-AND) exhibits broader adaptability, facilitating the release of drug-DNA in three positive cancer cell lines (MCF-7, HeLa, and HepG2). Importantly, MTDAND-AND and MTDOR-AND, while possessing distinct personalized therapeutic potential, share the ability of outputting three imaging signals without any intermediate conversion steps. This feature ensures precise classification cross diverse cells (MCF-7, HeLa, HepG2, and MCF-10A), even in mixed populations. This study provides a straightforward yet effective solution to augment the versatility and precision of DNA computing systems, advancing their potential applications in biomedical diagnostic and therapeutic research.

ABSTRACT

As a stable, low-cost, environment-friendly, and gas-sensitive material, semiconductor metal oxides have been widely used for gas sensing. In the past few years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have gained increasing attention in the field of gas sensing with the advantages of maximized atomic utilization and unique electronic and chemical properties and have successfully been applied to enhance the detection sensitivity and selectivity of metal oxide gas sensors. However, the application of SACs in gas sensors is still in its infancy. Herein, we critically review the recent advances and current status of single-atom catalysts in metal oxide gas sensors, providing some suggestions for the development of this field. The synthesis methods and characterization techniques of SAC-modified metal oxides are summarized. The interactions between SACs and metal oxides are crucial for the stable loading of single-atom catalysts and for improving gas-sensitive performance. Then, the current application progress of various SACs (Au, Pt, Cu, Ni, etc.) in metal oxide gas sensors is introduced. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of SACs in metal oxide gas sensors are presented.

ABSTRACT

Highly flexible and superelastic aerogels at large deformation have become urgent mechanical demands in practical uses, but both properties are usually exclusive. Here a trans-scale porosity design is proposed in graphene nanofibrous aerogels (GNFAs) to break the trade-off between high flexibility and superelasticity. The resulting GNFAs can completely recover after 1000 fatigue cycles at 60% folding strain, and notably maintain excellent structural integrity after 10000 cycles at 90% compressive strain, outperforming most of the reported aerogels. The mechanical robustness is demonstrated to be derived from the trans-scale porous structure, which is composed of hyperbolic micropores and porous nanofibers to enable the large elastic deformation capability. It is further revealed that flexible and superelastic GNFAs exhibit high sensitivity and ultrastability as an electrical sensors to detect tension and flexion deformation. As proof, The GNFA sensor is implemented onto a human finger and achieves the intelligent recognition of sign language with high accuracy by multi-layer artificial neural network. This study proposes a highly flexible and elastic graphene aerogel for wearable human-machine interfaces in sensor technology.

With the development of wireless communication, increasing signal processing presents higher requirements for radio frequency (RF) systems. Piezoelectric acoustic filters, as important elements of an RF front-end, have been widely used in 5G-generation systems. In this work, we propose a Sc0.2Al0.8N-based film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) for use in the design of radio frequency filters for the 5G mid-band spectrum with a passband from 3.4 to 3.6 GHz. With the excellent piezoelectric properties of Sc0.2Al0.8N, FBAR shows a large Keff2 of 13.1%, which can meet the requirement of passband width. Based on the resonant characteristics of Sc0.2Al0.8N FBAR devices, we demonstrate and fabricate different ladder-type FBAR filters with second, third and fourth orders. The test results show that the out-of-band rejection improves and the insertion loss decreases slightly as the filter order increases, although the frequency of the passband is lower than the predicted ones due to fabrication deviation. The passband from 3.27 to 3.47 GHz is achieved with a 200 MHz bandwidth and insertion loss lower than 2 dB. This work provides a potential approach using ScAlN-based FBAR technology to meet the band-pass filter requirements of 5G mid-band frequencies.

ABSTRACT

Southwestern China is receiving excessive chemical fertilizers to meet the challenges of continuous cropping. These practices are deteriorating the soil environment and affecting tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) yield and quality adversely. A novel microbially enriched biochar-based fertilizer was synthesized using effective microorganisms, tobacco stalk biochar and basal fertilizer. A field-scale study was conducted to evaluate the yield response of tobacco grown on degraded soil amended with our novel biochar-based microbial fertilizer (BF). Four treatments of BF (0%, 1.5%, 2.5% and 5%) were applied in the contaminated field to grow tobacco. The application of BF1.5, BF2.5 and BF5.0 increased the available water contents by 9.47%, 1.18% and 2.19% compared to that with BF0 respectively. Maximum growth of tobacco in terms of plant height and leaf area was recorded for BF1.5 compared to BF0. BF1.5, BF2.5 and BF5.0 increased SPAD by 13.18-40.53%, net photosynthetic rate by 5.44-60.42%, stomatal conductance by 8.33-44.44%, instantaneous water use efficiency by 55.41-93.24% and intrinsic water use efficiency by 0.09-24.11%, while they decreased the intercellular CO2 concentration and transpiration rate by 3.85-6.84% and 0.29-47.18% relative to BF0, respectively (p < 0.05). The maximum increase in tobacco yield was recorded with BF1.5 (23.81%) compared to that with BF0. The present study concludes that the application of BF1.5 improves and restores the degraded soil by improving the hydraulic conductivity and by increasing the tobacco yield.

ABSTRACT

Due to the lack of sufficient labeled data for the prostate and the extensive and complex semantic information in ultrasound images, accurately and quickly segmenting the prostate in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images remains a challenging task. In this context, this paper proposes a solution for TRUS image segmentation using an end-to-end bidirectional semantic constraint method, namely the BiSeC model. The experimental results show that compared with classic or popular deep learning methods, this method has better segmentation performance, with the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 96.74% and the Intersection over Union (IoU) of 93.71%. Our model achieves a good balance between actual boundaries and noise areas, reducing costs while ensuring the accuracy and speed of segmentation.
