ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Non­intestinal adenocarcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses (non­ITAC) is a heterogeneous tumour that has rarely been reported in previous studies. We compared and analysed the symptoms, radiographic and pathological features, treatment methods, and prognosis of patients with low-grade (G1) and high-grade (G3) tumours. METHODS: This was a retrospective study included 22 patients with pathologically confirmed non-ITAC of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses who were treated between January 2008 and December 2021 at a single centre. Of these, 11 patients had G1 tumours, and 11 patients had G3 tumours. Clinicopathological features, treatment methods, and survival outcomes were analysed. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 48.5 months. Nasal congestion was the most common initial symptom, and the nasal cavity was the most frequently involved site. For G1 tumours, the main treatment was simple surgery, 1 and 3­year overall survival (OS) rates were 100 and 88.9%, while the 1 and 3­year local control (LC) rates were 100 and 100%, respectively. For G3 tumours, the main treatments were surgery combined with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy,1 and 3­year OS rates were 72.7 and 72.7%, while the 1 and 3­year LC rates were 100 and 90.91%, respectively. G3 tumours was associated with significantly shorter overall survival than G1 tumours (P = 0.035). Patients with stage III-IV showed shorter overall survival compared to stage I-II patients (P = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS: Non-ITAC of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses may frequently occur in the nasal cavity. The main treatment modality is surgery, supplemented by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Pathological grade and tumour stage were poor prognostic factors for the disease.

ABSTRACT

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are metabolic by-products of cells, and abnormal changes in their levels are often associated with tumor development. Our aim was to determine the role of collagen and calcium binding EGF domain 1 (CCBE1) in oxidative stress and tumorigenesis in non-small cell lung cancer cells (NSCLC). We investigated the tumorigenic potential of CCBE1 in NSCLC using in vitro and in vivo models of CCBE1 overexpression and knockdown. Immunohistochemical staining results showed that the expression of CCBE1 in cancer tissues was significantly higher than that in adjacent tissues. Cell counting Kit 8, clonal formation, wound healing, and transwell experiments showed that CCBE1 gene knockdown significantly inhibited the migration, invasion, and proliferation of NSCLC cell lines. In terms of mechanism, the silencing of CCBE1 can significantly promote the morphological abnormalities of mitochondria, significantly increase the intracellular ROS level, and promote cell apoptosis. This change of oxidative stress can affect cell proliferation, migration, and invasion by regulating the phosphorylation level of ERK/JNK/P38 MAPK. Specifically, the downregulation of CCBE1 inhibits the phosphorylation of ERK/P38 and promotes the phosphorylation of JNK in NSCLC, and this regulation can be reversed by the antioxidant NAC. In vivo experiments confirmed that downregulating CCBE1 gene could inhibit the growth of NSCLC in BALB/c nude mice. Taken together, our results confirm the tumorigenic role of CCBE1 in promoting tumor invasion and migration in NSCLC, and reveal the molecular mechanism by which CCBE1 regulates oxidative stress and the ERK/JNK/P38 MAPK pathway.

ABSTRACT

The meta-analysis is to evaluate the predictive value of the blood urea nitrogen / creatinine ratio (BCR) for long-term outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF). PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane library, and Web of Science were searched for relevant studies from inception to October 2023. STATA SE 14.0 software was used for statistical analysis. A total of 2036 reports were identified with 14 studies meeting pre-designed inclusion criteria. Three long-term outcomes were investigated. In patients with HF, the increase of BCR level indicated a greater risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.67, 95% CI 1.38-2.00; I2 = 90.8%, P = 0.000). The acute HF (AHF) subgroup demonstrated a higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.79, 95% CI 1.15-2.79; I2 = 93.9%, P = 0.000) as did the non-AHF subgroup (HR = 1.51, 95% CI 1.34-1.71; I2 = 37.1%, P = 0.122). The subgroup (≤ 70 years old) demonstrated a lower risk of all-cause mortality in patients with HF (HR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.35-1.94; I2 = 68.3%, P = 0.004) as did the subgroup (> 70 years old) (HR = 1.67, 95% CI 1.19-2.34; I2 = 88.3%, P = 0.000). In addition, this study did not support the predictive value of BCR in CVD mortality (HR = 1.48, 95% CI 0.91-2.43; I2 = 63%, P = 0.100) and HF hospitalization (HR = 1.28, 95% CI 0.73-2.24; I2 = 77.5%, P = 0.035). Sensitivity analysis showed that all the results were robust. In summary, the results showed that the blood urea nitrogen / creatinine ratio (BCR) had a significant predictive value for all-cause mortality in patients with heart failure and was a fairly promising predictor obviously. Moreover, more studies are needed to further determine the predictive value of BCR in other long-term outcomes such as CVD mortality, HF hospitalization or aborted cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND: Liver metastases (LM) is the primary factor contributing to unfavorable outcomes in patients diagnosed with gastric cancer (GC). The objective of this study is to analyze significant prognostic risk factors for patients with GCLM and develop a reliable nomogram model that can accurately predict individualized prognosis, thereby enhancing the ability to evaluate patient outcomes. AIM: To analyze prognostic risk factors for GCLM and develop a reliable nomogram model to accurately predict individualized prognosis, thereby enhancing patient outcome assessment. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data pertaining to GCLM (type III), admitted to the Department of General Surgery across multiple centers of the Chinese PLA General Hospital from January 2010 to January 2018. The dataset was divided into a development cohort and validation cohort in a ratio of 2:1. In the development cohort, we utilized univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses to identify independent risk factors associated with overall survival in GCLM patients. Subsequently, we established a prediction model based on these findings and evaluated its performance using receiver operator characteristic curve analysis, calibration curves, and clinical decision curves. A nomogram was created to visually represent the prediction model, which was then externally validated using the validation cohort. RESULTS: A total of 372 patients were included in this study, comprising 248 individuals in the development cohort and 124 individuals in the validation cohort. Based on Cox analysis results, our final prediction model incorporated five independent risk factors including albumin levels, primary tumor size, presence of extrahepatic metastases, surgical treatment status, and chemotherapy administration. The 1-, 3-, and 5-years Area Under the Curve values in the development cohort are 0.753, 0.859, and 0.909, respectively; whereas in the validation cohort, they are observed to be 0.772, 0.848, and 0.923. Furthermore, the calibration curves demonstrated excellent consistency between observed values and actual values. Finally, the decision curve analysis curve indicated substantial net clinical benefit. CONCLUSION: Our study identified significant prognostic risk factors for GCLM and developed a reliable nomogram model, demonstrating promising predictive accuracy and potential clinical benefit in evaluating patient outcomes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Head injury criterion (HIC) companied by a rotation-based metric was widely believed to be helpful for head injury prediction in road traffic accidents. Recently, the Euro-New Car Assessment Program utilized a newly developed metric called diffuse axonal multi-axis general evaluation (DAMAGE) to explain test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) head injury, which demonstrated excellent ability in capturing concussions and diffuse axonal injuries. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the effectiveness of using DAMAGE for Hybrid Ⅲ 50th percentile male dummy (H50th) head injury assessment. The objective of this study is to determine whether the DAMAGE could capture the risk of H50th brain injury during small overlap barrier tests. METHODS: To achieve this objective, a total of 24 vehicle crash loading curves were collected as input data for the multi-body simulation. Two commercially available mathematical dynamic models, namely H50th and THOR, were utilized to investigate the differences in head injury response. Subsequently, a decision method known as simple additive weighting was employed to establish a comprehensive brain injury metric by incorporating the weighted HIC and either DAMAGE or brain injury criterion. Furthermore, 35 sets of vehicle crash test data were used to analyze these brain injury metrics. RESULTS: The rotational displacement of the THOR head is significantly greater than that of the H50th head. The maximum linear and rotational head accelerations experienced by H50th and THOR models were 544.6 ± 341.7 m/s2, 2468.2 ± 1309.4 rad/s2 and 715.2 ± 332.8 m/s2, 3778.7 ± 1660.6 rad/s2, respectively. Under the same loading condition during small overlap barrier (SOB) tests, THOR exhibits a higher risk of head injury compared to the H50th model. It was observed that the overall head injury response during the small overlap left test condition is greater than that during the small overlap right test. Additionally, an equation was formulated to establish the necessary relationship between THOR DAMAGE and H50th DAMAGE values. CONCLUSION: If H50th rather than THOR is employed as an evaluation tool in SOB crash tests, newly designed vehicles are more likely to achieve superior performance scores. According to the current injury curve for DAMAGE and brain injury criterion, it is highly recommended that HIC along with DAMAGE was prioritized for brain injury assessment in SOB tests.

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is an enduring inadequate blood flow to the brain, resulting in vascular dementia (VaD). However, the effective treatment strategies are lacking. Supplementing with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) has shown neuroprotective benefits in other neurodegenerative disorders. Nicotinamide riboside (NR), as a precursor of NAD+, is believed to hold promise in improving mitochondrial health, autophagy, and cognitive function. Meanwhile, NR has unique oral bioavailability, good tolerability, and minimal side effects, and it is the most promising for clinical translation. However, the effectiveness of NR in treating CCH-related VaD is still uncertain. The present study examined the neuroprotective effects of NR supplementation and its underlying mechanisms in a CCH rat model. The rats with CCH were given NR at a daily dosage of 400 mg/kg for 3 months. NR supplementation increased blood and brain NAD+ levels and improved brain function in CCH rats, including cognitive function and oxygenation capacity. It also reduced hippocampal neuronal loss and abnormalities and mitigated the decrease in dendritic spine density. The analysis of RNA sequencing in hippocampal tissue supports these findings. Electron microscopy and protein detection results suggest that NR may maintain mitochondrial structural integrity and exert a protective role by attenuating mitochondrial fission and impaired autophagy flux caused by CCH. In conclusion, these findings offer evidence for the neuroprotective potential of NR supplementation in ameliorating cognitive impairment induced by CCH.

INTRODUCTION: The seeds of Sterculia lychnophora Hance, commonly known as Pangdahai (PDH) in Chinese, have found extensive use in both culinary and traditional medicinal practices. However, a comprehensive understanding of the chemical composition of PDH has been lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study proposes a strategy that integrates biosynthetic pathway analysis with feature-based molecular networking (FBMN), aiming for a thorough and global characterization of the chemical compositions of PDH. METHODOLOGY: The FBMN map reveals potential compounds with structural similarity, and the MS/MS fragments could be annotated based on library matches, which could predict the plausible biosynthetic pathways in PDH, accomplishing the annotation of compounds clustered in FBMN by integrating biosynthetic pathways. RESULTS: Consequently, 126 compounds were plausibly or unambiguously identified, including 37 phenolic acids and glycosides, 20 flavonoids and glycosides, 12 procyanidins, 21 alkaloids, 22 lipids, and 14 others. Leveraging the information, 40 compounds, including 1 unique isoquinoline alkaloid and 2 rare linear furocoumarins, were isolated and confirmed. CONCLUSIONS: This study not only demonstrates a highly effective approach for identifying compounds within complex herbal mixtures but also establishes a robust foundation for the further development of PDH.

ABSTRACT

As the brain's resident immune patrol, microglia mediate endogenous immune responses to central nervous system injury in ischemic stroke, thereby eliciting either neuroprotective or neurotoxic effects. The association of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation with the progression of ischemic stroke is evident through diverse signaling pathways, notably involving inflammasomes. Within microglia, inflammasomes play a pivotal role in promoting the maturation of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin-18 (IL-18), facilitating pyroptosis, and triggering immune infiltration, ultimately leading to neuronal cell dysfunction. Addressing the persistent and widespread inflammation holds promise as a breakthrough in enhancing the treatment of ischemic stroke.

Several trichomonad species have already been identified in pigs, and their pathogenic potential may not be ruled out. To date, however, no information is available regarding the prevalence of trichomonads in pigs in Shanxi Province, North China. In the present study, a total of 362 fecal samples collected from pigs in three representative counties (Qi, Jishan, and Shanyin) in this province were examined for Tetratrichomonas buttreyi, Tritrichomonas foetus, and Pentatrichomonas hominis using a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with primers targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. The overall prevalence of T. buttreyi was 49.72%, and region and age were found to be significantly associated with T. buttreyi infection, respectively. Only one pig fecal sample from Qi County was found to be positive for T. foetus, and all samples were negative for P. hominis. Molecular evolutionary analysis revealed that some T. buttreyi isolates showed complete genetic identity with those reported previously, and some T. buttreyi isolates and one T. foetus isolate showed minor allelic variations compared with those reported previously. This is the report of the molecular epidemiology of T. foetus and T. buttreyi in pigs in Shanxi Province, North China. These findings not only enrich the knowledge on the distribution of these trichomonad species in pigs in China but also provide baseline information for planning future research and control strategies.

α-Dicarbonyl compounds (α-DCs) are commonly present in various foods. We conducted the investigation into concentration changes of α-DCs including 3-deoxyglucosone (3-DG), glyoxal (GO), and methylglyoxal (MGO) in fresh fruits and decapped commercial juices during storage at room temperature and 4 °C, as well as in homemade juices during storage at 4 °C. The studies indicate the presence of α-DCs in all samples. The initial contents of 3-DG in the commercial juices (6.74 to 65.61 µg/mL) are higher than those in the homemade ones (1.97 to 4.65 µg/mL) as well as fruits (1.58 to 3.33 µg/g). The initial concentrations of GO and MGO are normally less than 1 µg/mL in all samples. During storage, the α-DC levels in the fruits exhibit an initial increase followed by a subsequent decrease, whereas, in all juices, they tend to accumulate continuously over time. As expected, 4 °C storage reduces the increase rates of the α-DC concentrations in most samples. From the viewpoint of the α-DC contents, fruits and homemade juices should always be the first choice for daily intake of nutrients and commercial juices ought to be mostly avoided.

Background: The systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) is a novel inflammatory-immune biological marker that has prognostic value in various cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to investigate the relationship between SIRI and short-term and long-term prognosis in patients with acute type A aortic dissection (AAAD) underwent surgical treatment. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with AAAD who underwent emergency surgical treatment at our center. Through multifactorial logistics regression analysis and cox proportional hazards regression analysis, we identified SIRI as an independent risk factor for major adverse events (MAEs) and long-term aorta-related adverse events (ARAEs) post-surgery. The optimal cutoff value of preoperative SIRI was determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, and patients were divided into low SIRI group and high SIRI group. The prognostic outcomes at different time points post-surgery for the two groups of patients were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and the significance was determined by log-rank test. Results: A total of 691 AAAD patients were included in this study. Among them, 50 patients (7.2%) died within 30 days post-surgery, and 175 patients (25.3%) experienced MAEs. A total of 641 patients were followed up, with an average follow-up time of 33.5 ± 17.5 months, during which 113 patients (17.6%) experienced ARAEs. The results of multifactorial logistics regression analysis and cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that SIRI was an independent risk factor for postoperative MAEs (OR=3.148, 95%CI[1.650-6.006], p<0.001) and ARAEs (HR=2.248, 95%CI[1.050-4.809], p<0.037). Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that the MAEs-free survival in the high SIRI group was significantly lower than that in the low SIRI group, and a similar trend was observed in the ARAEs-free survival during follow-up (log-rank test, p<0.001). Conclusion: Preoperative SIRI is significantly associated with the short-term and long-term prognosis of AAAD patients underwent emergency open surgery, demonstrating its valuable prognostic value. Therefore, preoperative SIRI is a reliable biological marker that can serve as a valuable tool for preoperative risk stratification and decision management.

ABSTRACT

It has been shown that prostaglandin (PG) E2 synthesized in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) is involved in lipopolysaccharide-induced fever. But the neural mechanisms of how intra-LPBN PGE2 induces fever remain unclear. In this study, we investigated whether the LPBN-preoptic area (POA) pathway, the thermoafferent pathway for feed-forward thermoregulatory responses, mediates fever induced by intra-LPBN PGE2 in male rats. The core temperature (Tcore) was monitored using a temperature radiotelemetry transponder implanted in rat abdomen. We showed that microinjection of PGE2 (0.28 nmol) into the LPBN significantly enhanced the density of c-Fos-positive neurons in the median preoptic area (MnPO). The chemical lesioning of MnPO with ibotenate or selective genetic lesioning or inhibition of the LPBN-MnPO pathway significantly attenuated fever induced by intra-LPBN injection of PGE2. We demonstrated that EP3 receptor was a pivotal receptor for PGE2-induced fever, since microinjection of EP3 receptor agonist sulprostone (0.2 nmol) or EP3 receptor antagonist L-798106 (2 nmol) into the LPBN mimicked or weakened the pyrogenic action of LPBN PGE2, respectively, but this was not the case for EP4 and EP1 receptors. Whole-cell recording from acute LPBN slices revealed that the majority of MnPO-projecting neurons originating from the external lateral (el) and dorsal (d) LPBN were excited and inhibited, respectively, by PGE2 perfusion, initiating heat-gain and heat-loss mechanisms. The amplitude but not the frequency of spontaneous and miniature glutamatergic excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs and mEPSCs) in MnPO-projecting LPBel neurons increased after perfusion with PGE2; whereas the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) and the A-type potassium (IA) current density did not change. In MnPO-projecting LPBd neurons, neither sEPSCs nor sIPSCs responded to PGE2; however, the IA current density was significantly increased by PGE2 perfusion. These electrophysiological responses and the thermoeffector reactions to intra-LPBN PGE2 injection, including increased brown adipose tissue thermogenesis, shivering, and decreased heat dissipation, were all abolished by L-798106, and mimicked by sulprostone. These results suggest that the pyrogenic effects of intra-LPBN PGE2 are mediated by both the inhibition of the LPBd-POA pathway through the EP3 receptor-mediated activation of IA currents and the activation of the LPBel-POA pathway through the selective enhancement of glutamatergic synaptic transmission via EP3 receptors.

Temporal knowledge graphs (TKGs) are receiving increased attention due to their time-dependent properties and the evolving nature of knowledge over time. TKGs typically contain complex geometric structures, such as hierarchical, ring, and chain structures, which can often be mixed together. However, embedding TKGs into Euclidean space, as is typically done with TKG completion (TKGC) models, presents a challenge when dealing with high-dimensional nonlinear data and complex geometric structures. To address this issue, we propose a novel TKGC model called multicurvature adaptive embedding (MADE). MADE models TKGs in multicurvature spaces, including flat Euclidean space (zero curvature), hyperbolic space (negative curvature), and hyperspherical space (positive curvature), to handle multiple geometric structures. We assign different weights to different curvature spaces in a data-driven manner to strengthen the ideal curvature spaces for modeling and weaken the inappropriate ones. Additionally, we introduce the quadruplet distributor (QD) to assist the information interaction in each geometric space. Ultimately, we develop an innovative temporal regularization to enhance the smoothness of timestamp embeddings by strengthening the correlation of neighboring timestamps. Experimental results show that MADE outperforms the existing state-of-the-art TKGC models.

Arachidonic acid (AA) is a crucial polyunsaturated fatty acid in the human body, metabolized through the pathways of COX, LOX, and cytochrome P450 oxidase to generate various metabolites. Recent studies have indicated that AA and its metabolites play significant regulatory roles in the onset and progression of ovarian cancer. This article examines the recent research advancements on the correlation between AA metabolites and ovarian cancer, both domestically and internationally, suggesting their potential use as biological markers for early diagnosis, targeted therapy, and prognosis monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Up until now, no research has been reported on the association between the clinical growth rate of multilocular cystic renal neoplasm of low malignant potential (MCRNLMP) and computed tomography (CT) imaging characteristics. Our study sought to examine the correlation between them, with the objective of distinguishing unique features of MCRNLMP from renal cysts and exploring effective management strategies. AIM: To investigate optimal management strategies of MCRNLMP. METHODS: We retrospectively collected and analyzed data from 1520 patients, comprising 1444 with renal cysts and 76 with MCRNLMP, who underwent renal cyst decompression, radical nephrectomy, or nephron-sparing surgery for renal cystic disease between January 2013 and December 2021 at our institution. Detection of MCRNLMP utilized the Bosniak classification for imaging and the 2016 World Health Organization criteria for clinical pathology. RESULTS: Our meticulous exploration has revealed compelling findings on the occurrence of MCRNLMP. Precisely, it comprises 1.48% of all cases involving simple renal cysts, 5.26% of those with complex renal cysts, and a noteworthy 12.11% of renal tumors coexisting with renal cysts, indicating a statistically significant difference (P = 0.001). Moreover, MCRNLMP constituted a significant 22.37% of the patient population whose cysts demonstrated a rapid growth rate of ≥ 2.0 cm/year, whereas it only represented 0.66% among those with a growth rate below 2.0 cm/year. Of the 76 MCRNLMP cases studied, none of the nine patients who underwent subsequent nephron-sparing surgery or radical nephrectomy following renal cyst decompression experienced recurrence or metastasis. In the remaining 67 patients, who were actively monitored over a 3-year postoperative period, only one showed suspicious recurrence on CT scans. CONCLUSION: MCRNLMP can be tentatively identified and categorized into three types based on CT scanning and growth rate indicators. In treating MCRNLMP, partial nephrectomy is preferred, while radical nephrectomy should be minimized. After surgery, active monitoring is advisable to prevent unnecessary nephrectomy.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of king oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) root waste and soybean meal co-fermented protein (CFP) on growth performance, feed utilization, immune status, hepatic and intestinal health of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Largemouth bass (12.33 ± 0.18 g) were divided into five groups, fed with diets containing 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 % and 20 % CFP respectively for 7 weeks. The growth performance and dietary utilization were slightly improved by the supplementation of CFP. In addition, improved immunoglobulin M (IgM) content and lysozyme activity in treatments confirm the enhancement of immunity in fish by the addition of CFP, especially in fish fed 20 % CFP (P < 0.05). Furthermore, CFP significantly improved liver GSH (glutathione) content in groups D10 and D15 (P < 0.05), and slightly improved total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity while slightly reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Simultaneously, the upregulation of lipolysis-related genes (PPARα, CPT1 and ACO) expression and downregulation of lipid synthesis-related genes (ACC and DGAT1) expression was recorded in the group D20 compared with the control (P < 0.05), which were consistent with the decreased liver lipid contents, suggests that lipid metabolism was improved by CFP. In terms of intestinal structural integrity, ameliorated intestinal morphology in treatments were consistent with the upregulated Occludin, Claudin-1 and ZO-1 genes expression. The intestinal pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-8) expression were suppressed while the anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and TGF-ß) were activated in treatments. The expression of antimicrobial peptides (Hepcidin-1, Piscidin-2 and Piscidin-3) and intestinal immune effectors (IgM and LYZ) were slightly up-regulated in treatments. Additionally, the relative abundance of intestinal beneficial bacteria (Firmicutes) increased while the relative abundance of potential pathogenic bacteria (Fusobacterium and Proteobacteria) decreased, which indicated that the intestinal microbial community was well-reorganized by CFP. In conclusion, dietary CFP improves growth, immunity, hepatic and intestinal health of largemouth bass, these data provided a theoretical basis for the application of this novel functional protein ingredient in fish.

ABSTRACT

The design and synthesis of polyhedra using coordination-driven self-assembly has been an intriguing research area for synthetic chemists. Metal-organic polyhedra are a class of intricate molecular architectures that have garnered significant attention in the literature due to their diverse structures and potential applications. Hereby, we report Cu-MOP, a bifunctional metal-organic cuboctahedra built using 2,6-dimethylpyridine-3,5-dicarboxylic acid and copper acetate at room temperature. The presence of both Lewis basic pyridine groups and Lewis acidic copper sites imparts catalytic activity to Cu-MOP for the tandem one-pot deacetalization-Knoevenagel/Henry reactions. The effect of solvent system and time duration on the yields of the reactions was studied, and the results illustrate the promising potential of these metal-organic cuboctahedra, also known as nanoballs for applications in catalysis.

ABSTRACT

Optical-resolution photoacoustic endoscopy (OR-PAE) has been proven to realize imaging on the vascular network in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract with high sensitivity and spatial resolution, providing morphological information. Various photoacoustic endoscopic catheters were developed to improve the resolution and adaptivity of in-vivo imaging. However, this technology has not yet been validated on in-vivo GI tumors, which generally feature angiogenesis. The tumor causes thickened mucosa and neoplasia, requiring large depth-of-field (DOF) in imaging, which contradicts to high-resolution imaging. In this work, a novel catheter was developed with a high resolution of ∼27 µm, providing a matched DOF of ∼400 µm to cover the vessels up to the submucosa layer. Optical-resolution photoacoustic endoscopic imaging was first performed on in-vivo rat rectal tumors. In addition, to further characterize the vessel morphology, tumor-suspected regions and normal regions were selected for quantification and analysis of vessel dimension distribution and tortuosity. All the results suggest that the OR-PAE has great application potential in tumor diagnosis, evaluation, and monitoring of therapeutic efficacy.
