ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the correlation between electrical impedance indicators and commonly used nutritional indicators in neurocritical care patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect 58 neurocritical care patients in neurosurgery Department of Shuguang Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from June to September 2022. Bioelectrical impedance tests were performed after surgery or one week after injury, and nutrition-related biochemical indicators of the patients were collected on the same day, including nutritional status related indicators, inflammation related indicators, anemia related indicators and blood lipid related indicators. The patients were assessed with acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) Ⅱ score and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score. Based on the results obtained, the patients were assessed with nutritional score and spearman correlation analysis. The correlations of electrical impedance with nutrition related indicators and nutrition risk related indicators were analyzed. The prediction model of nutritional status was constructed by multi-factor binary logistic regression. Stepwise regression was used to screen electrical impedance indicators related to nutritional status. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated to evaluate the predictive ability of the nutritional status prediction model. Results: A total of 58 patients were collected, including 33 males and 25 females, and aged 72.0 (59.0, 81.8) years. Extracellular water (ECW) was positively correlated with interleukin 6 (r=0.529, P<0.001). The edema index [ECW/total body water (TBW)] was negatively correlated with albumin (r=-0.700, P<0.001), hematocrit (r=-0.641, P<0.001) and hemoglobin (r=-0.667, P<0.001). The phase angle was positively correlated with albumin (rRA=0.667, rLA=0.649, rRL=0.669, rLL=0.685, all P<0.001), hematocrit (rRA=0.600, rLA=0.604, rTR=0.565, rRL=0.529, rLL=0.602, all P<0.001) and hemoglobin (rRA=0.626, rLA=0.635, rTR=0.594, rRL=0.624, rLL=0.631, all P<0.001). By stepwise regression screening of predictive factors for nutritional status and incorporating age, gender and white blood cells as confounding factors into the model, the final model was obtained as follows: nutritional status=-0.01×age+1.22×gender-0.12×white blood cells+202.20×ECW/TBW+0.5 torso phase angle -82.16 [The OR value of ECW/TBW: 20.8 (95%CI: 3.7-117.1), P<0.001], with the AUC of 0.921. Conclusion: Bioelectrical impedance indicators have good correlations with commonly used clinical nutritional indicators, and can provide a new method for nutritional evaluation of neurocritical care patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the short-term efficacy of the prism treatment in a manner of reducing prism diopters step by step for small-angle acute acquired concomitant esotropia (AACE). Methods: Retrospective case series study. The clinical data of 17 AACE patients with strabismus ≤25 prism degrees (PD) including 6 males and 11 females, aged 14 to 60 years, who underwent the prism treatment in the Strabismus and Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic of Shanxi Eye Hospital from October 2018 to June 2020 were collected. The prism treatment was conducted by a step-by-step reduction of prism diopters. An under-corrected prism was applied to the patient for the first time, and the degree of the prism was reduced gradually with the decrease in the degree of strabismus. Statistical analysis was performed after 6 months of treatment. The treatment success was defined as obtaining orthotropia and deleting diplopia when prism glasses were weaned off. The strabismus degree, Worth 4 dot test results, near stereopsis (Titmus stereopsis) and synoptophore fusion function before and after treatment were compared, and the factors affecting the curative effect were analyzed. Statistical methods mainly included paired t-test, Wilcoxon rank sum test, the Fisher exact test and univariate logistic regression analysis. Results: Among these 17 patients, 15 had myopia and 2 had emmetropia. Pretherapeutic esodeviation was (13.94±5.83) PD at near (33 cm), and was (15.76±5.24) PD at distance (6 m). After 6 months of treatment, 7 patients were successfully cured. The deviation angle at distance [(10.60±7.16) PD] and near [(9.80±6.00) PD] of the remaining 10 patients at 6 months after prismatic treatment was significantly smaller than that before treatment [(17.50±5.40) PD and (16.10±5.47) PD; t=3.69, 4.10; both P<0.01]. The Titmus stereogram showed that 2 cases had no stereopsis, 6 cases had peripheral stereopsis, 3 cases had macular stereopsis, and 6 cases had foveal stereopsis before treatment. Stereopsis was significantly improved at 6 months after prismatic treatment, with 3 cases havimg macular stereopsis and 14 cases having foveal stereopsis (Z=-2.99; P<0.01). The Worth-4-dot test disclosed that, the number of patients who saw four lamps at distance and near was 0 and 2 before treatment, and 7 and 9 after treatment, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (both P<0.05). The divergent fusional amplitude and convergent fusional amplitude in the synoptophore at 6 month after treatment was not significantly different from that before treatment (both P>0.05). The efficacy of treatment was not significantly related to the duration from onset to treatment, the pretherapeutic esodeviation, the Titmus stereoacuity, cycloplegic refractive error, and age (all P>0.05). None of the 7 patients, who were successfully cured had a recurrence of esotropia or diplopia during the observation period of 6 to 24 months (median, 11 months). Conclusions: Prism treatment in a manner of step-by-step reduction of prism diopters can significantly diminish the degree of esotropia and improve the binocular function in small-angle AACE. Furthermore, some patients could be cured, achieving orthophoria without diplopia.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the real-world outcome of China FDA-approved Sofosbuvir (SOF)/Velpatasvir (VEL) in Northwest China. Methods: In this multicenter, prospective, real-world cohort study, we recruited patients from 10 sites from Northwest China, who were chronically infected with HCV GTs 1-6 from 06/2018 to 09/2019. Patients received SOF (400mg)/VEL (100mg) for 12 weeks, and with ribavirin 900-1200 mg for GT3 cirrhosis and for any genotype decompensated cirrhosis. The primary endpoint was sustained virological response at 12-weeks post-treatment (SVR12) and safety. The secondary endpoint was the change of liver function after the achievement of SVR12. Results: Totally, 143 patients were enrolled in the study, four patients were lost to follow-up and one died during the follow-up, 138 patients were included in per-protocol analysis. Of the 138 patients, the mean age 53 years, 53.6% male, 94.2% Han nationality, 53.6% liver cirrhosis, 10.1% HBsAg(+), 6.5% renal dysfunction, 5.1% treatment-experienced, and 16.7% patients received ribavirin treatment. The genotype distribution was as follows: 35.5% GT1, 42.8% GT2, 15.9% GT3, and 5.8% un-typed. The SVR12 rate was 96.5% (138/143, 95%CI: 93.5%-99.6%) for intention-to-treat analysis, and in per-protocol analysis, all 138 patients obtained SVR12 (100%). Compared with baseline, the serum total bilirubin, ALT and AFP levels decreased (all P < 0.05), as well as increased ALB and platelet count (all P < 0.001) at post-treatment 12-weeks. Overall adverse events (AEs) rate is 29.0%, and the most common AEs were anemia (14.5%) and fatigue (8.0%). Severe side effects (edema and fatigue) occurred in 2 patients, one of whom needed a short-term interruption of treatment due to fatigue. Conclusion: In this real-world cohort study, 12-week SOF/VEL regimen with or without ribavirin achieved high SVR12 rates (96.5%-100% overall) with excellent safety profile among patients with HCV GT1/2/3 infection including patients with GT3 and cirrhosis, and led to improvement of liver function.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the long-term clinical efficacy and safety of the bilateral superior oblique tendon suture spacer in treatment of A-pattern strabismus with superior oblique overaction (SOOA). Methods: Retrospective case series study. Twenty-one A-pattern strabismus patients who received the quantitative bilateral superior oblique tendon suture spacer with a complete follow-up from January 2009 to August 2017 were enrolled. Among these patients, 19 were exotropic and 2 were esotropic, including 11 males and 10 females, aged (14±9) years. Patients with unilateral superior oblique overaction, Broun syndrome or Helveston syndrome were excluded. The A-pattern strabismus, objective torsion, function of the superior oblique muscle and binocular vision were examined pre-and post-operatively. Paired t-test was used for normal distribution data, Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used for non-normal distribution data, Spearman rank correlation test and simple linear regression were used to analyze the correlation between the two variables. Results: The follow-up was 12 to 109 months (mean, 26±17 months). Twenty patients showed good alignment in the primary position with a deviation angle less than 10 prism diopter (PD), and 1 patient with esotropia had an angle greater than 15 PD. All the patients had no A pattern after surgery. The average pre-and post-operative A-patterns were (23.81±9.47) PD and (0.90±3.59) PD (t=11.29, P<0.01), respectively, and the average corrected A pattern was (23.52±9.68) PD.The average pre-and post-operative torsion was 3.18°±3.26° and -4.81°±4.13° (t=8.87, P<0.01), espectively, and the average corrected torsion was 7.95°±3.88°. No patient complained of torsional diplopia after surgery. The average amount of pre-and post-operative SOOA was 3.0 (2.0) and 0.0 (1.0) in 42 eyes (Z=-5.78, P<0.01), respectively. Suture extension of the superior oblique tendon was related with the pre-operative SOOA (r=0.47, P<0.01), but was not related with the pre-operative torsion (r=0.02, P=0.88). The linear regression results was suture extension=2.71× the grade of pre-operative SOOA (t=27.93, P<0.01). Conclusions: The bilateral superior oblique tendon suture spacer can improve the A-pattern, objective torsion and SOOA, with no torsional diplopia or V pattern after the long-term follow-up. It is a safe and effective superior oblique muscle weakening procedure. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2020, 56: 853-858).

OBJECTIVE: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a common liver disorder caused by lipid accumulation and insulin resistance (IR). Acylcarnitines have become a new biomarker of IR. However, their roles in NAFLD are still poorly studied. Thus, we performed a targeted metabolomic analysis to study the level of plasma acylcarnitines in patients with NAFLD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The levels of 34 plasma acylcarnitines were measured by a targeted metabolomic approach in NAFLD patients (n = 50) and in healthy control subjects (n = 50) by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Detailed demographic and clinical characteristics of all subjects were also analyzed. RESULTS: The clinical presentation of IR was identified in the NAFLD group but not in the healthy control group. Significant differences were found in the levels of several short-, medium- and long-chain acylcarnitines. A high degree of correlation (r>0.7) was found between even-numbered-carbon long-chain acylcarnitines in NAFLD patients. The area under the receiver operator characteristic of long-chain acylcarnitines, especially C20 (AUC=0.952), C16:1 (AUC=0.949) and C14:1OH (AUC=0.944) acylcarnitines, was greater in NAFLD patients than in healthy control subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The accumulation and disorders of acylcarnitines are associated with NAFLD. A positive correlation between even-numbered-carbon long-chain acylcarnitines was found, and these even-numbered-carbon long-chain acylcarnitines. could be used as potential novel screening markers for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To discuss the operative technique and follow-up effect of endoscopic dilatation and plasty for congenital choanal atresia in infants. Method:Clinical data of 7 children with congenital choanal atresia operative treatmented during September 2016 to January 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. the follow-up were followed closely and analyz the operative effect. Result: Seven cases were diagnosed by electronic nasopharyngoscope, nasal CT confirm the nature of atresia plate, and all 7 case successfully complete the operation. Follow-up survey ranged from 8 months to 23 months, postoperative nasal ventilation is good. The first case of bilateral choanal atresia was removed the nasal stenting after operative 3 months, and founded stenosis 1 month later. Reoperation to enlarge the choanal and retained the nasal stenting for 6 months, no restenosis or atresia after 15 months of follow-up. One patient gave up further treatment because of his own reasons and was lost to follow-up. The other 5 cases had no obvious constriction, good ventilation and no operative complications.Conclusion:Electronic nasopharyngoscope is noninvasive, convenient and accurate in the diagnosis of choanal atresia. Nasal CT confirm the nature of the atresia plate. Endoscopic dilatation and plasty of choanal atresia should be retained the nasal stenting for more than 6 months, avoid re-constriction. .

Objective:Two computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models of unilateral inferior turbinate reductions (ITR) were constructed and investigate the influences of aerodynamic consequences.Method:A unilateral hypertrophic inferior turbinate CFD model wasestablished. Two kinds of methods in removing of tissue bulk along the length of the hypertrophic inferior turbinate were used,and we got the model B and the model C. Nasal airflow distribution were computed before and after simulated unilateral inferior turbinate reduction in use of Fluent 6.3.26.Result:Simulated two kinds of ITR resulted in enlargement in the cross-section area of inferior nasal meatus, 0.36 cm² of the model B and 0.89 cm² of the model C in average. Model C produced a less reduction in intranasal pressures (approximately 3 Pa) than the model B and the original model which are the same as approximately 8 Pa. More air was predicted to flow in the affected nasal passage in the model C (approximately 80 ml/s) than the model B and the original model. Airspeed in the anterior valve region was improved significantly and more vortices happened in the model C.Conclusion:The model C is significantly better than the model B in restoring normal anatomy and ventilation physiological of the nasal cavity. So, in ITR recoverying normal anatomy structure of the nasal has decisive significance.

ABSTRACT

Being a key feature of a glassy state, low temperature relaxation has important implications on the mechanical behavior of glasses; however, the mechanism of low temperature relaxation is still an open issue, which has been debated for decades. By systematically investigating the influences of cooling rate and pressure on low temperature relaxation in the Zr50Cu50 metallic glasses, it is found that even though pressure does induce pronounced local structural change, the low temperature-relaxation behavior of the metallic glass is affected mainly by cooling rate, not by pressure. According to the atomic displacement and connection mode analysis, we further demonstrate that the low temperature relaxation is dominated by the dispersion degree of fast dynamic atoms rather than the most probable atomic nonaffine displacement. Our finding provides the direct atomic-level evidence that the intrinsic heterogeneity is the key factor that determines the low temperature-relaxation behavior of the metallic glasses.

Interferon- (IFN-) λ1 is regarded as a potent bio-active molecule in innate immunity. However, little is known about its role in chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). We therefore investigated expression of IFN-λ1 in CSU, its cellular location, and its influence on inflammatory cell accumulation by using flow cytometry analysis, skin tissue dispersion, immunohistochemical stain, and a mouse peritoneal inflammation model. The results showed that level of IFN-λ1 was 2.0-fold higher in plasma of the patients with CSU than the level in healthy control (HC) subjects. Among leukocytes examined, only CD8(+) T cells expressed more IFN-λ1 in CSU blood. Double labeling immunohistochemical staining revealed that IFN-λ1(+) inflammatory cells such as mast cells, eosinophils, B cells, neutrophils, and macrophages were mainly located in dermis, whereas epidermis tissue highly expressed IFN-λ1. IFN-λ1 induced a dose-dependent increase in number of eosinophils, lymphocytes, mast cells, macrophages, and neutrophils in the peritoneum of mice at 6 h following injection, which was inhibited by pretreatment of the animals with anti-intercellular adhesion molecule- (ICAM-) 1 and/or anti-L-selectin antibodies. In conclusion, IFN-λ1 is likely to play a role in the pathogenesis of CSU. Blocking IFN-λ1 production may help to reduce the accumulation of inflammatory cells in the involved CSU skin.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: One of the steroid intermediates, 4-androstene-3, 17-dione (AD), in the biotransformation of phytosterols is valuable for the production of steroid medicaments. However, its degradation during the conversion process is one of the main obstacles to obtain high yields. In this study, the effect of temperature on nucleus degradation during microbial biotransformation of phytosterol was investigated. The results indicated that microbial degradation of phytosterol followed the AD-ADD-'9-OH-ADD' pathway, and that two important reactions involved in nucleus degradation, conversions of AD to ADD and ADD to 9-OH-ADD, were inhibited at 37°C. With a change in the culture temperature from 30 to 37°C, nucleus degradation was reduced from 39·9% to 17·6%, due to inhibition of the putative KstD and Ksh. These results suggested a simple way to decrease the nucleus degradation in phytosterol biotransformation and a new perspective on the possibilities of modifying the metabolism of strains used in industrial applications. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Nucleus degradation of products is one of the main problems encountered during phytosterol biotransformation. To solve this problem, the effect of temperature on nucleus degradation was investigated in the industrial production of steroid intermediates. The results are also helpful to the genetic modification of sterol-producing strains.

OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to investigate the interaction mechanism between pioglitazone/simvastatin and the CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40-CD40L) system and to determine their interaction effects on atherosclerosis in rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty rabbits were randomly divided into five groups of eight: normal control, hyperlipidemia model, pioglitazone, simvastatin, and pioglitazone combined with simvastatin therapy. The rabbits were raised for 16 weeks. Blood samples and the aortic length were taken after 16 weeks with the following indicators: (1) blood lipid measurement [total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)] were measured; (2) measurement of serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L), and matrix metallopeptidase-9 (MMP-9) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; (3) aortic pathological observation and measurement of the area ratios for plaque/intimal; and (4) expression determination of CD40L in plaque parts by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: In the treatment groups, the levels of TC, TG, LDL-C, hsCRP, sVCAM-1, sICAM-1, sCD40L, and MMP-9 increased, and HDL-C level, plaque/intimal area ratio, and CD40 expression in the plaque parts decreased. Improved effects were also found in the combination treatment group. CONCLUSIONS: Pioglitazone and simvastatin may inhibit different functions, such as inflammatory response and lipid regulation, by inhibiting the CD40-CD40L signaling pathway to suppress the formation of atherosclerosis. Therefore, the combined application of pioglitazone and simvastatin has synergistic effects.

ABSTRACT

The ß-relaxation of metallic glasses (MGs) bears nontrivial connections to their microscopic and macroscopic properties. In an effort to elucidate the mechanism of the ß-relaxation, we studied by dynamical mechanical measurements the change of its properties on varying the composition of La60Ni15Al25 in various ways. The properties of the ß-relaxation turn out to be very sensitive to the composition. It is found that the isochronal loss peak temperature of ß-relaxation, Tß,peak, is effectively determined by the total (La + Ni) content. When Cu is added into the alloy to replace either La, Ni, or Al, the Tß,peak increases with decrease of the (La + Ni) content. The trend is in accordance with data of binary and ternary MGs formed from La, Ni, Al, and Cu. Binary La-Ni MGs have pronounced ß-relaxation loss peaks, well separated from the α-relaxation. In contrast, the ß-relaxation is not resolved in La-Al and La-Cu MGs, showing up as an excess wing. For the ternary La-Ni-Al MGs, increase of La or Ni content is crucial to lower the Tß,peak. Keeping the Al content fixed, increase of La content lowers the Tß,peak further, indicating the more important role La plays in lowering Tß,peak than Ni. The observed effects on changing the composition of La60Ni15Al25 lead to the conclusion that the properties of the ß-relaxation are mainly determined by the interaction between the largest solvent element, La, and the smallest element, Ni. From our data, it is further deduced that La and Ni have high mobility in the MGs, and this explains why the ß-relaxation in this La-based MGs is prominent and well resolved from the α-relaxation as opposed to Pd- and Zr-based MGs where the solvent and largest atoms, Pd and Zr, are the least mobile.

ABSTRACT

New metallic glasses containing La or Ce have been introduced having dynamic properties bordering on two extremes of conventional metallic glasses. This provides opportunity to test if the trends or correlations established before in molecular and polymeric glass-formers also exist in the broader family of metallic glasses. Due to the drastically different chemical and physical structures of metallic glass-formers than soft matter, there is no guarantee that any correlation found in the latter will hold in the former. If the trends and correlations are found, the result brings metallic glasses closer to the much wider classes of glass-formers in the similarity of properties. In non-metallic glass-formers, a general and fundamental connection has been established between the non-exponentiality parameter of the structural α-relaxation and the separation between its relaxation time τα and the ß-relaxation time τß. In this paper, we explore the experimental data of metallic glass-formers and show the correlation applies. An explanation of this correlation is given by the Coupling Model. The establishment of the correlation may facilitate the understanding of the roles played by the ß-relaxation in macroscopic properties of metallic glasses including the relations to shear transformation zone, ductile-brittle transition in deformation, crystallization, and diffusion.

ABSTRACT

The main challenges currently encountered in chemotherapy are the lack of tumor selectivity and drug resistance. The design of novel cytostatic drugs has become the state-of-the-art technology in terms of targeted tumor therapy. This review illustrates the mechanisms and the advantages of representative chemotherapeutic agents, and presents an updated summary of the various drug design strategies developed by modern medicinal chemists during the most recent tumor targeting research which include rational design for overcoming drug resistance, the combi-targeting strategy, the prodrug approach, and tumor specific transporter based drug design. The concept of transporter related tumor targeting strategies for small molecule anticancer drug design discussed in this review may be amenable to predictable drug discovery for targeted therapy.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies indicated the beneficial effects of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and transplanted neural stem cells (NSCs) on stroke. Here, we explored whether transplantation of neural stem cells (NSCs) modified by GDNF gene provides a better therapeutic effect than native NSCs after stroke. Primary rat NSCs were transfected with GDNF plasmid (GDNF/NSCs, labeled by green fluorescent protein from AdEasy-1, GFP). Adult rats were subjected to two-hour middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion, followed by infusion of NSCs (labeled with5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine before infusion, BrdU), GDNF/NSCs and saline at 3 days after reperfusion (NSCs group, GDNF/NSCs group, control group), respectively. All rats were sacrificed at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 weeks after reperfusion. Modified Neurological Severity Scores (mNSS) test and H and E staining were respectively performed to evaluate neurological function and lesion volume. Immunohistochemistry was used to identify implanted cells and observe the expressions of Synaptophysin (Syp) and postsynaptic density-95 (PSD-95) and caspase-3. TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) was employed to observe apoptotic cells. Western blotting was used to detect brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and NT-3 protein expression. Significant recovery of mNSS was found in GDNF/NSCs rats at 2 and 3 weeks after reperfusion compared with NSCs rats. Lesion volume in the NSCs and GDNF/NSCs groups was reduced significantly compared with control group. The number of NSCs in the GDNF/NSCs group was significantly increased in comparison with NSCs group. Moreover, Syp-immunoreactive product at 2 and 3 weeks after reperfusion and PSD-95 immunoreactive product in the GDNF/NSCs group were significantly increased compared with NSCs group. In contrast, caspase-3 positive cells and TUNEL-positive cells in the GDNF/NSCs group were significantly decreased compared with NSCs group. Significant increase of BDNF protein in the GDNF/NSCs and NSCs groups was observed compared to the control group at different time points of reperfusion, and GDNF/NSCs grafting significantly increased BDNF protein expression compared to NSCs grafting. In addition, significant increase of NT-3 protein in GDNF/NSCs and NSCs groups was detected only at 1 week of reperfusion compared to control group. The results demonstrate that grafting NSCs modified by GDNF gene provides better neuroprotection for stroke than NSCs grafting alone.

ABSTRACT

Previous experiments showed that ginsenoside Rb1 (GRb1) reduced infarct and neuronal deficit in rats followed by transient cerebral ischemia. The mechanism of this neuroprotective function is unclear. Here, we tested whether the effect of GRb1 can be achieved through preventing ischemic neuronal death, modulating apoptotic-related genes and affecting glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) expression in rats subjected to occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. When GRb1(40 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered immediately after reperfusion, the apoptotic cells in the GRb1 group were decreased significantly from 12 to 72 h of reperfusion compared to the ischemia group by TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling. Immunostaining and Western blotting analysis showed that the expression of GDNF from 3 to 120 h of the GRb1 group was significantly increased compared to the ischemia group, and GDNF expression peaked at 48 h after reperfusion. The enhanced GDNF mRNA in the GRb1 group was not detected by RT-PCR and in situ hybridization compared to the ischemia group, but GDNF mRNA at 48 h after reperfusion was strongly increased in both the ischemia and GRb1 group when compared to other time points. The number of bcl-2-positive cells was significantly increased from 12 to 120 h of reperfusion compared to the ischemia group. However, the number of bax-positive cells in the GRb1 group was significantly declined compared to the ischemia group. In the GRb1 group, the number of neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein-positive cells from 12 to 120 h after reperfusion was evidently higher than that in the ischemia group. Therefore, ginsenoside Rb1 prevents ischemic neuronal death induced by transient cerebral ischemia, and this mechanism of which is related to increase the expression of the antiapoptotic genes and modulate the expression of GDNF.

ABSTRACT

The ultrastructure of synergids of watermelon (Citrullus Lanatus L.) was investigated using transmission electron microscopy at following stages of embryo sacs: 1. Unpollination, on the first flowering day. 2. Unpollination, on 2nd day after anthesis (DAA). 3. Fertilization, on DAA 2. The synergids with distinct filiform apparatus at the micropylar end have abundant organelle, such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and plastids in cytoplasm, which indicate that they are active on the first flowering day. No wall is present at the chalazal part of synergid, and there are some flocculent materials and vesicles in the spaces of cytoplasma membranes among synergid, egg cell and central cell in embryo sacs at the first and the second stages. On DAA 2, in unpollinated embryo sacs, the central large vacuole of synergid is divided into several smaller ones and the starch grains decrease in cytoplasm. There is no newly synthesized wall at the chalazal end of persistent synergid in fertilized embryo sacs. The contents of degenerated synergid, in the form of electron dense granules, are located in the wide space among central cell, zygote and persistent synergid, and some of them migrate into central cell through cytoplasma membrane. Therefore, it is deduced that the contents of synergid might serve as a nutrient supplement to the development of endosperm, but not embryo.

To investigate the variations of active compounds between species, varieties and individuals of Valeriana cultivated under the same environmental condition, the contents of valerenic acid derivatives and valepotriates in rhizomes and roots of different plant material were analysed by a HPLC method. Different species or varieties of Valeriana yielded 11.65-0.15 mg/g of valerenic acid derivatives, and 1.81-0.03 mg/g of valepotriates. The variation between individuals of one commercial cultivar of V. officinalis ranged from 12.34 to 3.01 mg/g of valerenic acid derivatives, and 3.67-0.92 mg/g of valepotriates. Individuals from self-pollinated mother plants, normal or regenerated, showed a similar variation. The variation of micropropagated plants was much less than the seed propagated plants. The ratio of mean values between valerenic acid derivatives and valepotriates was similar in all groups (3 < ratio < 8) except one group of micropropagated plants (ratio > 20).

ABSTRACT

An efficient algorithm is proposed to reduce the computation cost of block matching algorithms for motion estimation in video coding. Based on a new insight in block matching algorithms, we extend the successive elimination algorithm to a multilevel case. By using the sum norms of the blocks and the subblocks, tighter and tighter decision boundaries can be obtained for eliminating the search positions. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm combined with the full search algorithm and several fast search algorithms is verified by simulation results.

ABSTRACT

The effects of Dimethylformamide (DMF) on monocytophagocytic system (MPS) of rodents were studied. The results showed large dose of DMF (1/20 LD50) with oral administration could significantly inhibit the functions of colloidal carbon clearance of MPS in Wistar rats, and of non-specific phagocytosis of sheep red blood cells (SRBC) by peritoneal macrophage in Kunming mice, and could also lowered significantly the levels of Fc and C3b receptors on the surface of peritoneal macrophage in mice. This showed DMF could cause obvious damage to MPS.
