ABSTRACT

The adsorption behaviors of norfloxacin (NOR) on marine sediments at different pH values and in the presence of four different surfactants were systematically investigated by a batch equilibrium method. The results indicated that Freundlich adsorption isotherms fitted the adsorption behavior of NOR on marine sediments very well at different pH values. The Freundlich constant K(F) and the equilibrium adsorption amount of NOR reduced with the increase of pH values, and the minimum appeared at pH 8.10. The results suggested that cation exchange was the main adsorption mechanism of NOR at pH 6.01, while Van der Waals' force, hydrophobic effects, electrostatic force were the major adsorption mechanism of NOR on marine sediments at pH 8.10. The adsorption process fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic equations with the addition of surfactants. Our study also indicated that the addition of surfactants had the significant influence on the saturated adsorption amount of adsorption of NOR. The equilibrium adsorption amount (Q(e)) of NOR exhibited the following sequence: Q(e) (Tween80) < Q(e) (Tween20)

ABSTRACT

Amberlite XAD-7 resin was modified by room temperature ionic liquid (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C6 mim]PF6) coating through a maceration method, gaining a new sort of hydrophobic adsorbent for the solid phase extraction mini-column. Trace inorganic mercury in wastewater samples was preconcentrated and determined by flow injection online mini-column sampling coupled with spectrophotometric determination. In acid medium, dithizone was employed as chelator with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) to form a red neutral mercury-dithizone complex, which could be extracted quantificationally by solid phase extraction technique on the mini-column. Under the optimized conditions, the linearity and the detection limit of the proposed method were found to be 0.35 to 50.0 microg x L(-1) Hg2+ and 0.067 microg x L(-1) Hg2+, respectively. The enrichment factor of 25 times could be achieved with a 50 mL sampling volume and the developed procedure was successfully applied for the determination of mercury in the certified reference material (GSBZ50016-90) and the spiked dock wastewater samples with the recovery of 99%-103%.

ABSTRACT

The sorption behaviors of nitrobenzene on marine sediments were systematically investigated in this study. The nitrobenzene sorption on both HCl-treated and untreated sediments accorded well with the linear sorption isotherm. It occurred primarily through partition function of organic carbon of sediments. In comparison, the sorption behavior of nitrobenzene on H2O2-treated sediments was nonlinear and conformed to Langmuir isotherm. Sorption of nitrobenzene on H2O2-treated sediment was mainly through surface function of sediment minerals such as clays. With the increase of ionic strength (salinity), solubility of nitrobenzene in solution would decrease. At the same time, the release of dissolvable part of organic carbon into water solution would also decrease. As a result, partition coefficient and saturate adsorption amount of nitrobenzene on marine sediments increased with increasing salinity of seawater. Contrary to the influence of salinity, partition coefficient and saturate adsorption amount of nitrobenzene decreased with increasing temperature.
