ABSTRACT

We report a descriptive study and the evaluation of its results for 1987 from the program of attention to pregnancy, delivery and puerperium in the Maspalomas health center. Our data are based on 223 pregnant women with F.P.P. included throughout the year. Overall 16 parameters were evaluated, and comparisons with the preceding year were made. Antenatal recruitment was 52.85% of all pregnancies. 22.87% of them were due to failure of contraception and 36% were not desired. A mean number of 4.9 +/- 2.26 controls per pregnancy were made, and 82.96% had a correct follow-up. The postnatal control included 69.59% of all women and 67.80% of neonates. 22.42% of women received maternal education, and a significant improvement (p less than 0.005) was detected in the behavior during delivery. 63.73% of neonates received breastfeeding during the first postnatal control, and 100% underwent screening for metabolic abnormalities. 5.71% had low birth weight. We conclude that the program has improved, as compared with the preceding year, in coverage, follow up and quality indexes, although 100% of its initial aims have not been fulfilled.
