ABSTRACT

Fingerprints are considered one of the best forms of personal identification. While numerous enhancement techniques exist to develop fingerprints under various conditions, the enhancement of fingerprints exposed to sea spray aerosol (SSA) still remains problematic. 1056 fingerprints from four donors, using a depletion series and triplicate repeats, were deposited onto glass panels and exposed to SSA for 1 week and 1 month. Control prints were deposited in the same manner and left under laboratory conditions. All prints were enhanced using fingerprint enhancement techniques available to Forensic Police Officers and subsequently examined for identifiability by a Fingerprint Expert. Significantly fewer identifiable prints (p<0.01) were developed after exposure to SSA for 1 month (11%) compared to exposure for 1 week (69%) (compared to the control prints 99%) for all enhancement techniques. After 1 week's exposure, all techniques enhanced over 50% of prints, except SPR white (12%), with iron (III) oxide and Wetwop™ white producing over 90% identifiable prints. Only iron (III) oxide, Wetwop™ white and SPR black returned any identifiable prints following 1 month's SSA exposure. Iron (III) oxide being significantly better (p<0.01, 67%) than the other techniques. Iron (III) oxide suspension and Wetwop™ white were found to be superior at enhancing prints at both SSA exposure times.

ABSTRACT

Under a previously approved institutional review board protocol for prostate cancer patients, implanted metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor dosimeters (dose verification system, Sicel Technologies) were used for measurement of the in vivo delivered daily dose. This dosimetric information provided the ability to adapt the plan if the measured doses did not match the dose expected from the planning system. Due to the inherent uncertainty in the dosimeters, the decision to adapt the treatment plan was made only if readings differed by more than 7 % for three consecutive days. To validate this method, we acquired daily cone beam computed tomography images for five patients, and the dose delivered to the dosimeters was calculated by use of (1) an automated procedure (MIM Maestro, MIM Software) and (2) the treatment planning system (XIO, Elekta). 72 % of the doses calculated automatically fell within 1 % of the doses calculated in the planning system, and 99 % agreed within 2 %. When compared to the calculated dose, 53 % of the in vivo measurements fell within 3 % of the calculated dose, 80 % fell within 5 %, and 9.8 % were greater than 7 %, but never on three consecutive days. The measured doses agreed reasonably well with the calculated doses, supporting the decision to adapt the plan only if there were discrepancies of more than 7 % over three consecutive days. Even with the inherent uncertainty in the dosimeters, this adaptive planning method can detect delivery inaccuracies that would not otherwise be caught with the use of only daily image guidance or other dose calculation surrogates.

ABSTRACT

The use of a bovine serum albumin (BSA) density gradient for isolation of rat pancreatic Islets of Langerhans after collagenase digestion has been compared with the standard Ficoll separation technique. The criteria studied were islet yield (insulin extraction of the islet interfaces and pellet), purity of preparation (amylase content of the islet preparation), insulin release characteristics, and the result of isologous transplantation in diabetic rats. The islet interface of the BSA gradient contained 62.2% of the total insulin, whereas the corresponding interface of the Ficoll gradient contained only 36.6% (P less than 0.001). The amylase content of the Ficoll-separated islet preparation was 6133 U/L, as opposed to 1230 U/L with BSA (P less than 0.001). BSA-isolated islets gave similar insulin release characteristics to non-density-gradient-isolated islets, whereas Ficoll-separated islets showed suboptimal insulin release. Single-donor-single-recipient transplantation was successfully performed with BSA-isolated islets whereas multiple donors were required with Ficoll-separated islets. Thus significantly improved results were found with the bovine serum albumin density gradient separation in all criteria and consequently the use of this gradient represents an advance in islet isolation techniques.

Characteristic changes in the secreted polypeptides of Kirsten murine sarcoma virus (KiMSV) transformed mouse and rat cell lines could be detected 48 hours after infection of phenotypically normal cells with this virus and correlated with detection of the KiMSV encoded polypeptide p21.
