ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to improve the commonly used method for 226Ra determination in water and to establish its application in solid samples. This method is based on the coprecipitation of Ra with BaSO4 and gross alpha counting of the precipitate. An exhaustive study of the coprecipitation behaviour of the most abundant cations present in solid samples was performed to avoid incorrect radiochemical yields. As a result, it was considered necessary to introduce two new purification steps into the conventional method. Likewise, two nuclides, 241Am and 226Ra, were compared to obtain the mass efficiency curve given their different behaviour in the coprecipitation process. While Ra behaves similarly to Ba, Am coprecipitates, forming mixed crystals that may behave differently in the self-absorption process. The influence of the cations on the chemical yield with no precipitate purification was: Sr2+≫Fe3+>Mg2+≈Ca2+>K+≈Na+. The method was successfully applied to soil, sediment, and plant ash samples.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the experimental studies carried out to determine (238)Pu, (239/40)Pu, (241)Pu, (241)Am, (242)Cm and (244)Cm in samples from nuclear power plants (mainly spent ion exchange resins and evaporator concentrates) using an organophosphorus compound immobilized on an inert support. These materials are commercially available under the name TRU Resin (for Transuranium Specific) from Eichrom Industries, Darien, IL. An attempt is made to develop a rapid, accurate method of analysis, with minimum waste generation. Standard solutions of Pu and Am and one sample of spent ion exchange resin that contains fission, activation products, Pu, Am and Cm were analyzed to study the separation factors and interferences in the measurement of Pu, Am and Cm isotopes.

ABSTRACT

In this paper the problems associated with the "in situ" concentration techniques using MnO2 and Al2O3 as adsorbents are reviewed. Sampling equipments, radiochemical separation procedures, yield tracers, sources preparation and counting methods are described. The different behaviour of Ra, U, Th, Pu and Am is discussed and considered for future speciation studies.

ABSTRACT

Cummulative dose-response curves to l-noradrenaline and in presence of different concentrations of TRH (10(-3), 10(-4), 10(-5), 10(-6), 10(-7), and 10(-8) M) were investigated. 25 segments of vas deferens (escrotal tract) were obtained from different surgical patients of urological disorders. At the lower concentration (greater than 10(-7) M), we can not appreciate any influence of TRH on the l-noradrenaline response. Nevertheless there was a reduction of response to l-noradrenaline, with displacement of the curves to the right side, for the high concentrations, and a proportional ratio to the concentration to TRH.
