ABSTRACT

This study presents a novel solution for ambient assisted living (AAL) applications that utilizes spiking neural networks (SNNs) and reconfigurable neuromorphic processors. As demographic shifts result in an increased need for eldercare, due to a large elderly population that favors independence, there is a pressing need for efficient solutions. Traditional deep neural networks (DNNs) are typically energy-intensive and computationally demanding. In contrast, this study turns to SNNs, which are more energy-efficient and mimic biological neural processes, offering a viable alternative to DNNs. We propose asynchronous cellular automaton-based neurons (ACANs), which stand out for their hardware-efficient design and ability to reproduce complex neural behaviors. By utilizing the remote supervised method (ReSuMe), this study improves spike train learning efficiency in SNNs. We apply this to movement recognition in an elderly population, using motion capture data. Our results highlight a high classification accuracy of 83.4%, demonstrating the approach's efficacy in precise movement activity classification. This method's significant advantage lies in its potential for real-time, energy-efficient processing in AAL environments. Our findings not only demonstrate SNNs' superiority over conventional DNNs in computational efficiency but also pave the way for practical neuromorphic computing applications in eldercare.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Vision (CV) have led to automated pose estimation algorithms using simple 2D videos. This has created the potential to perform kinematic measurements without the need for specialized, and often expensive, equipment. Even though there's a growing body of literature on the development and validation of such algorithms for practical use, they haven't been adopted by health professionals. As a result, manual video annotation tools remain pretty common. Part of the reason is that the pose estimation modules can be erratic, producing errors that are difficult to rectify. Because of that, health professionals prefer the use of tried and true methods despite the time and cost savings pose estimation can offer. Methods: In this work, the gait cycle of a sample of the elderly population on a split-belt treadmill is examined. The Openpose (OP) and Mediapipe (MP) AI pose estimation algorithms are compared to joint kinematics from a marker-based 3D motion capture system (Vicon), as well as from a video annotation tool designed for biomechanics (Kinovea). Bland-Altman (B-A) graphs and Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) are used to identify regions of statistically significant difference. Results: Results showed that pose estimation can achieve motion tracking comparable to marker-based systems but struggle to identify joints that exhibit small, but crucial motion. Discussion: Joints such as the ankle, can suffer from misidentification of their anatomical landmarks. Manual tools don't have that problem, but the user will introduce a static offset across the measurements. It is proposed that an AI-powered video annotation tool that allows the user to correct errors would bring the benefits of pose estimation to professionals at a low cost.

ABSTRACT

After traffic-related incidents, falls are the second cause of human death, presenting the highest percentage among the elderly. Aiming to address this problem, the research community has developed methods built upon different sensors, such as wearable, ambiance, or hybrid, and various techniques, such as those that are machine learning- and heuristic based. Concerning the models used in the former case, they classify the input data between fall and no fall, and specific data dimensions are required. Yet, when algorithms that adopt heuristic techniques, mainly using thresholds, are combined with the previous models, they reduce the computational cost. To this end, this article presents a pipeline for detecting falls through a threshold-based technique over the data provided by a three-axis accelerometer. This way, we propose a low-complexity system that can be adopted from any acceleration sensor that receives information at different frequencies. Moreover, the input lengths can differ, while we achieve to detect multiple falls in a time series of sum vector magnitudes, providing the specific time range of the fall. As evaluated on several datasets, our pipeline reaches high performance results at 90.40% and 91.56% sensitivity on MMsys and KFall, respectively, while the generated specificity is 93.96% and 85.90%. Lastly, aiming to facilitate the research community, our framework, entitled PIPTO (drawing inspiration from the Greek verb "πι´πτω", signifying "to fall"), is open sourced in Python and C.

ABSTRACT

The exploitation of deep neural networks (DNNs) as descriptors in feature learning challenges enjoys apparent popularity over the past few years. The above tendency focuses on the development of effective loss functions that ensure both high feature discrimination among different classes, as well as low geodesic distance between the feature vectors of a given class. The vast majority of the contemporary works rely their formulation on an empirical assumption about the feature space of a network's last hidden layer, claiming that the weight vector of a class accounts for its geometrical center in the studied space. This article at hand follows a theoretical approach and indicates that the aforementioned hypothesis is not exclusively met. This fact raises stability issues regarding the training procedure of a DNN, as shown in our experimental study. Consequently, a specific symmetry is proposed and studied both analytically and empirically that satisfies the above assumption, addressing the established convergence issues. More specifically, the aforementioned symmetry suggests that all weight vectors are unit, coplanar, and their vector summation equals zero. Such a layout is proven to ensure a more stable learning curve compared against the corresponding ones succeeded by popular models in the field of feature learning.

ABSTRACT

The present study aims to investigate the country-of-origin effect and the branding process on the brand equity of Greek yogurt abroad, specifically in the United Kingdom. The research was carried out as a 2 × 2 experiment using a closed-ended questionnaire with the participation of a total of 400 consumers, using two Greek yogurts (branded and non-branded) as the product under study, with or without country-of-origin insignia (viz. the Greek flag) on the packaging. According to the research results, brand equity was found to be higher for the branded Greek yogurt with country-of-origin insignia among the four product categories, as reflected in its three sub-dimensions (brand awareness, loyalty, and perceived quality). It was also found that country of origin influences brand equity regardless of branding, a finding that confirms the significant effect of this factor on consumers' perceptions. This highlights the distinction between perceived quality and the specific image of the country in terms of its production experience for a specific product category. Based on these findings, Greek yogurt companies exporting abroad should lay great emphasis on developing branding strategies to strengthen their product brand, while at the same time incorporate country of origin as an indicator of the quality of their brand. The latter finding applies in particular to less well-known brands, since geographical indication (insignia) or other strategies that promote the country of origin are perceived as important informational cues for consumers.

ABSTRACT

One of the most prominent attributes of Neural Networks (NNs) constitutes their capability of learning to extract robust and descriptive features from high dimensional data, like images. Hence, such an ability renders their exploitation as feature extractors particularly frequent in an abundance of modern reasoning systems. Their application scope mainly includes complex cascade tasks, like multi-modal recognition and deep Reinforcement Learning (RL). However, NNs induce implicit biases that are difficult to avoid or to deal with and are not met in traditional image descriptors. Moreover, the lack of knowledge for describing the intra-layer properties -and thus their general behavior- restricts the further applicability of the extracted features. With the paper at hand, a novel way of visualizing and understanding the vector space before the NNs' output layer is presented, aiming to enlighten the deep feature vectors' properties under classification tasks. Main attention is paid to the nature of overfitting in the feature space and its adverse effect on further exploitation. We present the findings that can be derived from our model's formulation and we evaluate them on realistic recognition scenarios, proving its prominence by improving the obtained results.

ABSTRACT

Knowledge-based synergistic automation is a potential intermediate option between the opposite extremes of manual and fully automated robotic labor in agriculture. Disruptive information and communication technologies (ICT) and sophisticated solutions for human-robot interaction (HRI) endow a skilled farmer with enhanced capabilities to perform agricultural tasks more efficiently and productively. This research aspires to apply systems engineering principles to assess the design of a conceptual human-robot synergistic platform enabled by a sensor-driven ICT sub-system. In particular, this paper firstly presents an overview of a use case, including a human-robot synergistic platform comprising a drone, a mobile platform, and wearable equipment. The technology framework constitutes a paradigm of human-centric worker-robot logistics synergy for high-value crops, which is applicable in operational environments of outdoor in-field harvesting and handling operations. Except for the physical sub-system, the ICT sub-system of the robotic framework consists of an extended sensor network for enabling data acquisition to extract the context (e.g., worker's status, environment awareness) and plan and schedule the robotic agents of the framework. Secondly, this research explicitly presents the underpinning Design Structure Matrix (DSM) that systematically captures the interrelations between the sensors in the platform and data/information signals for enabling synergistic operations. The employed Systems Engineering approach provides a comprehensible analysis of the baseline structure existing in the examined human-robot synergy platform. In particular, the applied DSM allows for understanding and synthesizing a sensor sub-system's architecture and enriching its efficacy by informing targeted interventions and reconfiguring the developed robotic solution modules depending on the required farming tasks at an orchard. Human-centric solutions for the agrarian sector demand careful study of the features that the particular agri-field possesses; thus, the insight DSM provides to system designers can turn out to be useful in the investigation of other similar data-driven applications.

ABSTRACT

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play a primary role in a plethora of technical and scientific fields owing to their wide range of applications. In particular, the provision of emergency services during the occurrence of a crisis event is a vital application domain where such aerial robots can contribute, sending out valuable assistance to both distressed humans and rescue teams. Bearing in mind that time constraints constitute a crucial parameter in search and rescue (SAR) missions, the punctual and precise detection of humans in peril is of paramount importance. The paper in hand deals with real-time human detection onboard a fully autonomous rescue UAV. Using deep learning techniques, the implemented embedded system was capable of detecting open water swimmers. This allowed the UAV to provide assistance accurately in a fully unsupervised manner, thus enhancing first responder operational capabilities. The novelty of the proposed system is the combination of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) techniques and computer vision algorithms for both precise human detection and rescue apparatus release. Details about hardware configuration as well as the system's performance evaluation are fully discussed.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we present a parallel artificial cortical network inspired by the Human visual system, which enhances the salient contours of an image. The network consists of independent processing elements, which are organized into hypercolumns. They process concurrently the distinct orientations of all the edges of the image. These processing elements are a new set of orientation kernels appropriate for the discrete lattice of the hypercolumns. The Gestalt laws of proximity and continuity that describe the process of saliency extraction in the human brain are encoded by means of weights. These weights interconnect the kernels according to a novel connection pattern based on co-exponentiality. The output of every kernel is modulated by the outputs of its neighboring kernels, according to a new affinity function. This function takes into account the degree of difference between the facilitation of the two lobes of the kernel. Saliency enhancement results as a consequence of the local interactions between the kernels. The network was tested on real and synthetic images and displays promising results for both. Comparisons with other methods with the same scope, demonstrate that the proposed method performs adequately. Furthermore it exhibits O(N) complexity with execution times that have never been reported by any other method so far, even though it is executed on a conventional PC.
