ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: While the prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in venous and arterial thrombotic events had already been estimated by previous studies, the prevalence of aPL in subjects with Thrombotic Microangiopathy (TMA) is still not fully elucidated. Thus, we conducted a systematic review to estimate the frequency of aPL in subjects with biopsy-proven renal TMA. METHODS: We conducted in the PubMed database a search for English-language studies investigating the presence of aPL in subjects with biopsy-proven renal TMA from January 1985 to December 2022. Keywords used in the search included: 'antiphospholipid syndrome', 'antiphospholipid antibodies' and 'thrombotic microangiopathy'. Cohorts of HUS patients were excluded due to the risk of over-estimating the prevalence of aPL in these populations. The median frequency for positive aPL including anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL), antibodies against ß2-glycoprotein-I (anti-ß2GPI) and lupus anticoagulant (LA) was then calculated. RESULTS: 522 articles were identified through the literature search. Six studies, assessing the prevalence of aPL in 211 subjects with renal TMA, were retrieved. The overall aPL prevalence was estimated as 24.4% (range 22-56). The estimated prevalence of aCL (IgG/IgM), anti-ß2GPI, (IgG/IgM) and LA was 4.0% (range 3-27), 4.0% (range 3-16) and 18.9% (range 13-25), respectively. APS was diagnosed in 16.3% (range 11-29) of the patients. Of note, a high level of heterogeneity was observed when comparing the reported aPL profiles for each study. CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive systematic analysis of studies investigating the prevalence of aPL in renal TMA showed that, despite the high heterogeneity of the included studies, aPL are present in about one case out of four renal-TMA cases.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we report on the preparation of Imidazole-functionalized glass surfaces, demonstrating the ability of a dinuclear Cu(II) complex of a macrocyclic ligand to give a "cascade" interaction with the deprotonated forms of grafted imidazole moieties. In this way, we realized a prototypal example of an antimicrobial surface based on a supramolecular approach, obtaining a neat microbicidal effect using low amounts of the described copper complex.

ABSTRACT

Different human papillomavirus (HPV) types are characterized by differences in tissue tropism and ability to promote cell proliferation and transformation. In addition, clinical and experimental studies have shown that some genetic variants/lineages of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) types are characterized by increased oncogenic activity and probability to induce cancer. In this study, we designed and validated a new method based on multiplex PCR-deep sequencing of the E6/E7 region of HR-HPV types to characterize HPV intra-type variants in clinical specimens. Validation experiments demonstrated that this method allowed reliable identification of the different lineages of oncogenic HPV types. Advantages of this method over other published methods were represented by its ability to detect variants of all HR-HPV types in a single reaction, to detect variants of HR-HPV types in clinical specimens with multiple infections, and, being based on sequencing of the full E6/E7 region, to detect amino acid changes in these oncogenes potentially associated with increased transforming activity.

ABSTRACT

The feline gut can harbour a number of protozoan parasites. Recent genetic studies have highlighted new epidemiological findings about species of Cryptosporidium, assemblages of Giardia duodenalis and Toxoplasma gondii. Furthermore, epidemiological studies suggest the occurrence of Tritrichomonas foetus in cats is on the increase worldwide. The prevalence of selected intestinal protozoa was determined by PCR using DNA previously extracted from the faeces of 146 privately owned healthy cats from Italy. Molecular genotyping on T gondii, G duodenalis and Cryptosporidium DNA was achieved. PCR assays were positive in 32 (22.9%) samples. Three animals (2.0%) were positive for T foetus and Cryptosporidium DNA, 15 specimens (10.3%) were positive for T gondii and 11 (7.5%) for G duodenalis. Co-infections were never observed. Results of the typing analysis allowed the identification of Cryptosporidium felis in all cases. The specimens positive for T gondii hinted at clonal genotype I (n = 7), genotype II (n = 1) and genotype III (n = 7). The G duodenalis isolates were referable to assemblages F (n = 9) and C (n = 2). In conclusion, the results obtained in this study add to the literature regarding the epidemiology of these parasites by confirming their presence in the faeces of healthy pet cats.
