ABSTRACT

Spent residue slurry-phase hydrocracking catalyst coated with coke have been classified as hazardous solid waste, presenting serious economic and environmental issues to refiners. Herein, the spent catalysts with a nickel sulfide nanoparticle/coke hierarchical structure (NiSX /C) from our previous work were used to prepare nickel sulfide/hierarchical porous carbon (NiSX /HPC) for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through the method of carbonization, activation, and sulfurization. The results indicate that the NiSX /C converts into Ni/HPC after carbonization and activation, and then transform into NiSX /HPC by sulfurization. The optimized NiSX /HPC-8 possesses the crystal phase of NiS2 , and the high specific surface area of 1134.9 m2 g-1 with the hierarchical micro-mesoporous structure. Besides, NiSX /HPC-8 achieves a low overpotential of 236 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , a low Tafel slope of 64.1 mV dec-1 , and excellent stability. This work provides a viable method for upcycling spent catalysts to re-constructed OER catalysts with high catalytic performance and durability.

ABSTRACT

A sodium alginate (SA) edible coating containing oregano essential oil (OEO)/ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) inclusion complexes (SA/OEO-MP coating) was developed to extend the shelf life of fresh chicken breast during refrigeration storage. First, OEO was inserted into the hydrophobic interior of ß-CD to form an inclusion complex (OEO-MP) that maintained its excellent antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The formed OEO-MP was characterized using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results demonstrated that ß-CD could improve the thermal stability of OEO. The encapsulation efficiency reached 71.6 %, and OEO was released continuously from the OEO-MP. The lipid oxidation, total viable count (TVC) and sensory properties of chicken breasts were regularly monitored when OEO-MP was incorporated into the SA coating for chicken breast preservation. Compared with the uncoated group, the SA/OEO-MP-coated groups showed significantly reduced increases in pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), and TVC, especially in the SA/OEO-MP1 group. In summary, the SA/OEO-MP coating could preserve the chicken breast by reducing lipid oxidation and inhibiting the proliferation of microorganisms. It would be developed as a prospective edible packaging for chicken preservation.

ABSTRACT

Nickel nanoparticles supported on metal oxides were prepared by a modified electroless nickel-plating method. The process and mechanism of electroless plating were studied by changing the active metal (Ag) loading, acidity, and surface area of metal oxides and were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and H(2) chemisorption. The results showed that the dispersion of nickel nanoparticles was dependent on the interface reaction between the metal oxide and the plating solution or the active metal and the plating solution. The Ag loading and acidity of the metal oxide mainly affected the interface reaction to change the dispersion of nickel nanoparticles. The use of ultrasonic waves and microwaves and the change of solvents from water to ethylene glycol in the electroless plating could affect the dispersion and size of nickel nanoparticles.
