ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the indication for 67Ga-citrate imaging and its clinical impact on patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF). METHOD: The scanning with ventral and dorsal projections was done 48 an 72 h after i.v.-injection of 370 Mbq 67Ga-citrate. RESULTS: In the 5 patients with idiopathic RPF included in the study, there was a remarkably high correlation between the clinical symptoms, the surgical and histologic findings, the activity of the disease and the results of 67Ga-scintigraphy. CONCLUSION: While CT and--maybe even better--MRI might perfectly show the extension, shape and contour of the fibrotic tissue, Gallium-67 scan appears to be superior in assessing the intensity and activity of the disease process.

ABSTRACT

Ten of our AIDS patients developed a unilateral or bilateral spontaneous pneumothorax. Four patients previously had pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and one had pulmonary tuberculosis. In six patients the pneumothorax occurred during the acute period of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Five patients were admitted to hospital because of the pneumothorax. The radiological findings varied from a small pneumothorax to almost total pulmonary collapse. Five of the ten patients were discharged after successful treatment of the pneumothorax but, in two, cystic lung segments had to be removed surgically.

ABSTRACT

Two observations of mammographic findings in axillary vein thrombosis showed the main similarities of alterations in the soft parts of the arm and/or breast (vein dilation, thickening of the skin, edema). Radiological findings can simulate the possibility of a tumor or even a total carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

The validity of individual radiological signs for the differentiation of osteoplastic bone metastases from osteitis deformans has been investigated quantitatively (103 skeletal metastases from carcinoma of the prostate, 45 cases of Paget's disease, two osteoplastic bone metastases from a carcinoma of rectum and bronchus). The similarities were demonstrated by three cases observed by us. Problems in the quantitative evaluation of the radiographs are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Five partial (intramural) gastric diverticula were observed in about 10,000 routine examinations of the stomach and confirmed by endoscopy or operation. All diverticula were located on the greater curvature of the antrum. A round or oval pouch with a small neck and typical changes in shape and size represent the diagnostic radiographic features of partial diverticulum. Complete filling of the diverticulum by administration of a spasmolytic and the use of the double-contrast method proved to be important for the correct diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

The fact that primary and secondary tumors of bone may present identical appearances (isomorphism) in radiographs is due to the unspecific reaction to different diseases of bony tissue. Radiographic differential diagnosis has narrow limits. Interpretation must take account of localization and age of the patient. Two cases of osteoplastic metastases in long bones are described which look very much like osteogenic sarcoma. Some 20 observations of this kind have been collected from the literature. The factors causing primary and reactive proliferation of bone are analyzed in detail.

ABSTRACT

A para-ureteric pseudo-cyst of the middle third of the ureter was observed following a sympathectomy. Originally it was diagnosed as a renal tumour. The findings are described and the pathogenesis, symptomatology and diagnosis are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The intrathoracic rib belongs to the group of additional ribs, hence the 'english synonym "supernumerary rib". Two cases are reported. The mode of inheritance could not be established. Knowledge of this rare and bizarre anomaly is important in order to avoid unnecessary treatment (occasionally even a thoracotomy).
