ABSTRACT

Effects of pomegranate peel and artichoke leaf aqueous extracts on biochemical, microbiological and sensorial quality of sardine fillets was investigated during marination and storage for 90 days. Sardine fillets were marinated with 4% acetic acid, 10% NaCl and either 5% pomegranate peel extracts or 5% artichoke leaf extracts. The control sample was marinated with only 4% acetic acid and 10% NaCl. The antimicrobial activity of pomegranate peel and artichoke leaf extracts led to reduce total viable counts and total coliform during marination and storage. Samples marinated with pomegranate peel and artichoke leaves showed better oxidative stability and higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Higher values of free fatty acids and histamine were found in control samples, whereas adding extracts of pomegranate peel or artichoke leaves significantly decreased total volatile basic nitrogen and trimethylamine during storage. Greater color and appearance scores were found for samples marinated with pomegranate peel and artichoke leaf extracts than the control samples.

ABSTRACT

A graftable LDV (Leu-Asp-Val) peptidomimetic molecule (B-c) has been prepared from 3-(5-amino-2-hydroxy)phenyl-propionic acid, as alpha(4)beta(1) (VLA-4) integrin ligand. For that purpose, the mechanism of 3-(4-azidophenyl)propionic acid rearrangement has been revisited. Activation of Durapore DVPP-hydrophilic membrane, by surface wet chemistry using triazine trifluoride, followed by covalent coupling of B-c produced a modified filter (0.8% of derivatisation from XPS analysis) with improved capacity of leukocyte retention.

ABSTRACT

Novel piperazinyl-amide derivatives of N-alpha-(aryl-sulfonyl)-L-arginine were synthesized as graftable thrombin inhibitors, in the context of biomaterials' design. The possible disturbance of biological activity due to a variable spacer-arm fixed on the N-4 piperazinyl position and the introduction of a trifluoromethyl group as XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) tag on the sulfonamide moiety were evaluated in vitro against human alpha-thrombin. All the compounds of the library were found to be active at the micromolar level, as the reference TAME (N-tosyl-L-arginine methyl ester). The blood compatibilization improvement of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) membrane, coated or grafted by wet chemistry treatment with one representative inhibitor of the library, was also evaluated, showing interesting decrease in blood clot formation.

ABSTRACT

We report on the construction of a linkage map for brown trout (Salmo trutta) and its comparison with those of other tetraploid-derivative fish in the family Salmonidae, including Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus). Overall, we identified 37 linkage groups (2n = 80) from the analysis of 288 microsatellite polymorphisms, 13 allozyme markers, and phenotypic sex in four backcross families. Additionally, we used gene-centromere analysis to approximate the position of the centromere for 20 linkage groups and thus relate linkage arrangements to the physical morphology of chromosomes. Sex-specific maps derived from multiple parents were estimated to cover 346.4 and 912.5 cM of the male and female genomes, respectively. As previously observed in other salmonids, recombination rates showed large sex differences (average female-to-male ratio was 6.4), with male crossovers generally localized toward the distal end of linkage groups. Putative homeologous regions inherited from the salmonid tetraploid ancestor were identified for 10 pairs of linkage groups, including five chromosomes showing evidence of residual tetrasomy (pseudolinkage). Map alignments with orthologous regions in Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, and Arctic char also revealed extensive conservation of syntenic blocks across species, which was generally consistent with chromosome divergence through Robertsonian translocations.

ABSTRACT

A series of 2-substituted 3,7-dihydroimidazolo[1,2-a]pyrazine-3-ones has been synthesized and evaluated for their antioxidant activity. Compounds 1-8 are inhibitors of AAPH-induced lipid peroxidation (in vitro) and excellent protectors against microvascular damages in ischemia/reperfusion (in vivo). Hence, the bicyclic structure typical of coelenterazine (luciferin) could be considered as a useful lead in medicinal chemistry.
